i'm thinking about making an ai pack (also have a tournament in discussion) and a problem i had making a pushy bot ai-ed was that it ran away from the opponent. it was facing in the right direction even. any tips?

Honestly we don't even need moar average AI packs...

You probably wired your bot the wrong way. Also there is an AI thread that is in the Tutorials section. Post in there.
