Title: Super Smash Indies - a Smash Bros Fangame by Badnik96
Post by: Badnik96 on December 06, 2014, 06:41:09 PM
*Logo to go here eventually. Once I make one.*

I'm not sure really where to start, but here we go. People have started projects like this before but none have finished, or at least to the degree I'm hoping to get to. My plan is a Super Smash Bros style game featuring characters from indie games. I've done some snooping around and I have a pretty large roster in mind, plus an engine to support it. However, since I'm not too experienced with pixel art/animation and game programming, this'll probably take a while and might not be fully finished for years. I've only barely gotten my feet wet in programming, and not only am I rusty with pixel art, I've never done characters like this before. This is gonna be an ambitious project and hopefully I can get it off the ground and have something working soonish.

The game will be made in Unity and will feature 4-player local versus as well as a basic classic mode. Once that basic release is out of the way, I may add an adventure/story mode, trophies, and other cool features.

Here's the characters I've sprited so far:

Unfortunately I don't have experience in game programming (maybe one day), but do you care if I offer a few character ideas for movements and stages with their properties in diagram form?

Edit: I'm only going to do diagrams for stages instead of characters for now. Just to save some time.

So the dyke from Gone Home is gonna be in it right?

4real though you should put isaac, reimu and the commando from risk of rain in it

Isaac is currently planned. I'm hesitant to add any Touhou for now mainly because I dont know much about the series and my brother hates it. I'll take a look at Risk of Rain.

Little early to be making roster suggestions though. I still dont have anything concrete.

What exactly did you have in mind for the roster to look like?

Should have worded that better. My roster is pretty much set but I havent gotten anywhere in programming. Thats what I meant by "nothing concrete".

have you considered non-traditional sprites? maybe something drawn in flash? i could probably bang out a few animations that way, though this would have to be something that particularly piques my interest unless im getting payed for it in some way

this looks just like unity. have you considered using it? it's got a far larger community support base and far more games have been successfully built with it

I went and looked at it and I'm liking this. I'll probably swap over to Unity.

Spelunky Guy?
Steve? from Minecraft?

Both are planned characters ATM.

Yeah, valve is a big corporation. Then again, they dont really fit in with nintendo. Maybe a few select characters? Because a duo character (ICE CLIMBERS) could work well with the Portal 2 Co-op bots.

I'll see if i can get unity to do anything useful, if not i can have a bash at some pixel art, but im not great at it.

Three good suggestions:

Shovel Knight
The Kid from Bastion
Captain Viridian from VVVVVV

We have officially switched over to Unity. If any of you guys have any programming knowledge there I'd love your help. I'm also still looking for some sprite artists/animators.

I would love to help cause I've got animation and programming experience (I've made a few small games before) and I would like to have an opportunity to work with you guys (I really mean it) but considering that I'm currently on a two year training course and I'm having little free time at the moment until Christmas and only for a few days, I'm out. However you have my full support on the project and I wish you the best of luck. I know you can do it.
Title: Re: Super Smash Indies - a Smash Bros Fangame by Badnik96
Post by: Badnik96 on December 08, 2014, 07:25:00 PM
The only thing keeping Captain Viridian from being a character is his lack of moveset potential. The only thing he does in his game is change gravity, how do you make a moveset out of that? He will at least be an assist trophy if I figure out how to program them.

Shovel Knight was actually one of the first characters chosen for the game. The Kid I think I considered, but I'll reconsider him again.

Sucks that you can't help out; if you do get some free time I'd love to have you on board.

edit: Nevermind, thought up a moveset for Viridian in the shower. He's good to go now.

Thanks Craaig.

2nd sprite - Captain Viridian from VVVVVV. His moveset will mainly revolve around swapping gravity and tripping his opponents.

Redid Quote's idle animation because it looked kinda odd. Also redid the shading on the sprite, though it's kinda hard to see with how small the sprite is.

The plan is for me to do one character's base sprite/idle animation a day until I'm through with all of them, with a stick figure "dummy" to test coding and animating skills. Once all the coding is done all that's left is to finish the sprites and add whatever extras I want to. Quick test shows I'm right on the scale I want to be on too, which is fantastic. Things are going well!

I'm still trying to figure out how i'd get one iconic look for the character, unfortunately. If it gets out of design hell then yes there will be a Megabyte Punch character.

edit: what i've decided to do is design a character with the specials I want and make that character the one playable. Sound good to you?

Ive actually never heard of that game till now :V

The roster is already really big (about the same size as Smash 4's atm), but there's no limit to how many I can add. We will see.

Edit: Judging from what I've seen, the gameplay looks fantastic and Lilac seems to have an easily designable moveset. Heck, I could make her a semi clone of Sonic if I really wanted to :V

It looks like a fun game though, I've gotta pick it up at some point.

I want to keep every sprite in a similar style, idk if I can do the thicker head outline without messing that up. I honestly think the color is fine, but whatever.

Today's sprite is none other than:

Freddy is gonna be a character. Somehow his moveset is almost identical to Zelda's. idek
That should hopefully be the premise for his home stage.

Apologies if he's a little strange looking, it's a tough character to get in this scale and I had very few reference shots from a good angle.

Speedrunner from his titular game, SpeedRunners. This game is fun as hell, and I'm hoping his playstyle in my game will be too. He's a speed demon who uses all sorts of gadgets for his special attacks.

Never played SpeedRunners so I cant give much on that.
Freddy looks amazing. Will he be relatively slow and move semi roboticly?
Steve looks good. He's a bit too stubby for my taste.

More Ideas- Terrarian from Terraria, King Graham from Kings Quest, good pick to be in since he got so much praise at The Game Awards.

Stage Idea- Miniclip- A Warioware Inc. (Brawl) like stage, it cycles through like, 10 random Miniclip classics.

Was RA2 Considered Indie? Emergency as an assist trophy would be hella swag.

Unfortunately, no RA2 is not considered indie. I'll try to stick an RA2 reference in there somewhere though.

TBH the Terraria guy doesn't bring much new to the table. He probably won't be in.

Stage ideas seem cool, I may use them.

New sprite alert!

The "main character" (the one that shows up most in official art) of Super Crate Box. For the purposes of this game he's called Super Crate Guy. His moveset will revolve around rapidly changing weapons using his neutral special (think Shulk).

Limbo should get a character and Stage.

Two other stages could take place in Arztotzka (Papers Please) and on The Ship (FTL)

Also I would consider a different name.

Avalanche, you say that the derp is strong in that one? Think again.
Also, Badnik, it would be kewl if u put one of the stock robots from RA2 in the game. You know, represent!

Today's sprite!
Beck, from the upcoming Mighty No. 9. He's the first of (I think) 2 characters to come from a game that has yet to be released. Of course, he'll play a lot like Mega Man.

And here's one of the Gang Beasts. He's going to play kind of like Jigglypuff but not really, with lots of wacky punches, throws and some ragdoll action.

As a final smash he should turn into one of the big gang beasts.

A little more obscure than most, here we have Lyle from the game Lyle in Cube Sector. It's a fun little metroidvania that I think you guys should try. Unfortunately, I think the guy's site is down atm : (

His moveset will revolve around generating and throwing cubes. This also means his grabs/throws will be top notch.

And here's Commander Video. Probably the quickest sprite I've done yet.

The Kid from I Wanna Be The Guy. Not entirely sold on this sprite, what do you guys think?

New sprite, Juan from Guacamelee! His game literally gives him four special moves with button inputs, so those will be his moves. Also expect very powerful throws. This sprite took a long time and I'm not looking forward to animating him. :V

You should do one for one of the stickmen in the game Stick Wars, if you know what the game is. I would suggest either a magikill, Spartan, or swordsman.

I'd make the fencer look more dull. He doesnt have much detail in the game.

here some more suggestions, I'll PM you that movesets once i find my book.

Characters:
ARID - The Fall
Viking - Swords & Soldiers
Shantae - Shantae and the Pirates Curse

Stages:
Sportsball Arena

What are you programming this with?

I'm programming the game in Unity. Seems like the easiest way to go.

Redid the fencer sprite a little. Gave him some more detail (screw you qwerty XD) and reworked the shading/pose a little. Looks a lot better now IMO.

Here's Dust from his self-titled game. Fidget will follow him in game, but she's a whole different sprite entirely.

I used a different spriting method for this one, sizing down an actual frame from the game to work in this size and then tracing it over.

For the announcer, you could have a little contest for people to send in voice clips and then see who's is the best.

New sprite! The Clawed Girl from They Bleed Pixels. She seems a little small, but she's about the same height as Lyle, so it isn't that bad I think. Her main gimmick is when she does enough damage, she can create a Save Sigil that she can teleport to at any time, making her incredibly mobile.

The Batter from OFF. He actually wasn't in the roster to begin with, but was suggested by one Rob Collins. I looked the game up and he seemed like a good fit for Smash.

He'll have all sorts of moves centering around his abilities from the game, including a move that's similar to Ivysaur's healing thing in PM...

Okay, I may have cheated a little. His game hasn't come out yet.
This guy's name is Crow, and he's the main antagonist of Nefarious, a game where you play as the bad guy. The game's being worked on by the guy who made Brawl in the Family, and it barely hit its kickstarter goal a few months back.

Crow's main abilities are explosives, but he can also summon minions a la King Dedede before they were replaced with the suicide spikeball of death

Latest sprite. Here's Dustman from Dustforce. The game was developed by fans of Melee, and so he'll play similarly to that with speed and heavy hits. However, he'll have a high skill cap and be very light to make up for this.

I've begun work on the engine. Haven't gotten to the point where I can showcase a demo yet.
