Title: The Elder Scrolls series
Post by: Incredirobotwars on May 13, 2010, 02:22:59 PM
Heya. G.K. suggested that I make a thread for the Elder Scrolls, since he knows a few people play it here. Of course, I took the challenge because people rarely talk about the games.

Aaaaanyway, I'm currently in the root burrow in Oblivion : Shivering Isles, and I keep dying!  :(

(Never played Elder Scrolls before)

My only tip for you on that is:

Try not to die, you may get hurt!

I can't play TESIII or TESIV vanilla anymore. I just have to mod the crap out of them because there are always things for me to nit pick about and I can fix all of them and create a better experience through modding.

Morrowind is quite awesome.

Post by: Incredirobotwars on May 14, 2010, 10:45:20 AM
The reason I keep dying is because to enter Dunroot Burrow, you need to ingest a highly addictive drug. You need to keep finding it to not suffer greatly from the withdrawral effects.
Title: Re: The Elder Scrolls series
Post by: somestrangeguy on May 14, 2010, 11:11:09 AM
Hmm... I quess waiting somewhere for the withdrawal effects to go away is out of the question, so I suggest going to GameFAQs.com and find a map for the drugs locations or read that part from a walktrough.

Post by: Incredirobotwars on May 14, 2010, 12:35:15 PM
thanks, SSG. There are about 6 tunnels which you have to go through in order to reach the end. Each is filled to the brim with Elytra Hatchlings which try to kill you. Only a few of them carry the drug (felldew), and all of them are REALLY anoying. Yeah, I'm very likely to die.
By the way, SSG, you could just go to www.uesp.wiki (http://www.uesp.wiki). It would make it much easier.

Post by: Incredirobotwars on May 15, 2010, 01:20:50 AM
Sorry, that was a shortened one. If it doesn't work, just type 'unofficial Elder Scrolls' into it. It should give you some background information of how badly I'm failing...damn Elytra.

I bet they're a little too big for a can of anti-bug spray...

A stab in the ventral nerve cord would probably be enough though.

Golden saints are immortal now ? Or it's just the game ?

I would use some levitation or invisibility spell here.

Well, this is properly on topic.
Really can't wait for Skyrim to be released. Looks SO much better than the previously awesome predecessors.

Haha yes, Skyrim I have (since I preordered it) and it is pretty epic to play

Im a little surprised that it works on this laptop, seeming as it only has inboard graphics. My two characters (both on seperate characters) are a battle mage, and a dual blader (high elf and redgaurd)

Oblivion > Skyrim, IMO

Also, I bought Skyrim today. Accidentally. I have to say, the 1st half an hour that I've played so far isn't as fun as oblivion. D= Is there a Dark Brotherhood in Skyrim, or a guild that gives you assassination quests?

Yep, the only reason I haven't joined is because I haven't slept in any bed since starting the game...and I have been too busy with Thieves Guild quests...and just general thievery. The Greybeards told me to get something, then I got sidetracked...I think it may be a bit like Towley, my character got high, and just sort of wandered off.

I am level 34, and I still haven't done whatever the Greybeards told me to do.

Yes, there is.

I was going to type it out, but here:

Jump to 1:55.

EDIT: Out of the two guilds I have joined, the Thieves Guild in Riften is much more fun (mission-wise) than the Dark Brotherhood. However both supply a set of very useful armour and worth it just for that, IMO.

Not really, considering how the old lady is extremely evil and heartless, and the children all cheer when they find out she's dead. You can know this just by eavesdropping on how she actually talks to the children.

I know, but that can't come soon enough. Got to the claw door, and he attacked me so I had to reload to while I was still struggling to open the chests without him alerting the guard. Plus he gets caught by bear traps (some thief, doesn't even have the Light Foot perk).

Thank you thalmor embassy quest, now I have full elven light armor and enough money to buy a house.

also, randomly occuring dragons. They seem to appear just at the wrong time. Example : I get out of the thalmor embassy without Lydia, forget to fast travel, with nearly no potions, get extremely annoyed with that frost troll in the cave, i get out, then one of the boss music tracks start to play. I think "what ? is it a dragon" ?

It was. Cue Oh Crap moment from me. Especially that I had no good cover.

You alerted the backup when you were moving from the party to the interrogation rooms, didn't you? Lydia nearly died from the 5 enemies so I had to reload my save until I can sneak perfectly. SHE WAS WEARING EBONY ARMOR AND WIELDING WUUTHRAD, DAMMIT. D:

Also, you could've casted healing spells on yourself after you've killed that troll. :P

I was entirely healed after fighting the troll. Just that 140 HP isn't a lot (i was level 9 when I did that quest)

Also I died at least 5 times in the thalmor embassy. Mostly because I was unprepared and i tried to sneak right inside the guards. Also, with no armor, cause I found it back in delphine's chest.

Also, sneaking ? Pah, I killed them all with a combination of FUS RO DAH, my trusty sword and my Fire Bolt. Yeah i'm playing a battlemage like in every RPG I can, since BG1.  When you sneak, you don't kill them and you can't take their stuff and go sell it (expected with the high rank sneaking perks). Especially that I jumped from leather to elven.

Stormcloaks are nazis ? Sure they are certainly not straight heroes (especially when I heard Ulfric talking about Whiterun. And then after that he complains about being called a villain), but they seem rather reasonable overall. As the empire is damnit.

Thalmors are nazis. With expensive clothes, that makes a good reason to kill them all on the spot when you fin them.

I'm having a real moral dilemna here, on supporting the Stormcloaks or the Imperial Legion. Both seem to have good points. I mean, Stormcloaks are the coolest, but that's not a reason to choose.

Tell not killing them to my 15x damage with daggers as long as I am hidden. Although I do my best to not kill anyone who isn't naturally an enemy.

Spent too much time South of Thalmor territory, so I haven't actually encountered any yet.

But yeah, don't support the oppressive Imperial pigs either. Neither side deserves the support of the Dragonborn!
You're right, but since I've already defeated the Stormcloaks with the Imperials, I'm going to see what it's like as a Stormcloak. I guess that's the only way you can see which side is the "good guys".

I just helped Ulfric take over because screw the Imperials for trying to execute me in the beginning of the game. The Stormcloaks apparently have no problem with me being a Redgaurd. Anyway, neither side is the "bad guys". Just like in most real wars, both sides have good reasons for fighting, also like real wars the whole thing is ultimately about religion. The Thalmor are the real Nazis, they'll even tell you straight up that they are the master race descended from the gods.

Note that it's not like the whole empire wants to kill you. Mostly it's just one angry bitch.

And 1-they paid for it by having a fort destroyed by ALDUIN, THE WORLD EATER itself, 2- they failed.

When you sneak, you don't kill them and you can't take their stuff and go sell it

Actually, I sneak because I don't want to alert the rest. Taking them out one by one gives you a satisfactory feeling. :P

Also, I'm thinking about siding with the Stormcloaks but I have to find a way for Ulfric to get killed as well. I heard Brunwulf would be Jarl if Ulfric died, and I'm all for a dude who sympathizes with the people in the Gray Quarter. :P

Wow, the only glitch that I have found myself that is worth mentioning is the guy that has wood growing out of him. It looks like he tried to cut a log with the handle of the axe, and then someone jammed a log in his wrist.

On another note, I slept for the first time, if only to activate the Dark Brotherhood quest, stole the whole armour set and the Blade of Woe from Astrid (she is now as naked as most of the people in Riften), and I killed the angry mother because she sounded like the worst one...then I got distracted by a shiny thing, and sold my stuff at the Thieves Guild

Aaah riften. Almost as bad as Markath. (too bad because Markath is a really cool looking town)

I feel like slaughtering like 50% of the population of both towns. Without getting any bounty, of course. Maybe it's worth increasing my sneak skill a bit more, or learning some invisibility spell.

If you want to be really effective with a pretty much 100% of a one shot when hidden, you will want to be at 50 Sneak and have the Assassin's Blade perk (15 times normal damage when sneak attacking with a dagger). Although it helps to have 100 pickpocket and have the Perfect Touch perk (able to steal equipped items), then start the Dark Brotherhood quest and get taken to the shack, save, get hidden, and then try to steal all of Astrid's items (Blade of Woe (22 damage dagger), and the entire Shrouded armour set (most notably, Shrouded Gloves where backstabs deal double damage (a hidden attack with my dagger generally does in excess of 30,000)). Or you could try powerhousing your way through whilst staying hidden.

Nope, other towns couldn't care less. Have 2,000 bounty in Riften, stay in Whiterun. As far as I know, I haven't had a bounty yet... apart from that one time where Fus Ro hit the dragon and the three guards behind it, got 43 bounty for it. Used it as an excuse to get the achievement for breaking out of jail.

It has staggered it long enough for me to get a good sprinting power attack on it before, as well as a few followup hits.

Something tells me that my thievery utterly screwed up a quest. Catching the murderer in Windhelm, I had already stolen the key to his house from him, opened the chest and got the journal that you are supposed to get at the end of the quest. I then went pillaging random houses, unlocked one of them, and it told me that I had started a quest, I did all of the research, randomly talked to the mage, and killed the murderer. Pretty sure I skipped at least half of the quest by pickpocketing and being sneaky. Then again, it's just reminiscent of cheating for all minerals in Spectrobes, and skipping half of the game by talking to that guy again and giving him a diamond.

Decided to start playing Oblivion again (I was spening too much time on Crackdown.)
Ah, Dark Brotherhood...you remind me so much of my Morag-Tong days. A bow and arow, a kill and no bounty...Morrowind provided happy days.

Also, Nary, if you like evil torture peoples, play the Oblivion: Shivering Isles quests. Sheogorath tells you to set up a fake dungeon that lures travellers and foreigners in, so that you can torture them and take their belongings for the good of the isle.

Yeah i've done the whole dark brotherhood quest as well, and it was funny. Also, good way to make money and train sneak.

Also, I am now level 30 and joining the legion, after killing the emperor :trollface . First quest is insanely difficult. So a half naked bandit marauder wielding a dwarven war hammer can kill me in 4-5 power attacks, despite me being clad in legendary dragonscale armor and having 60 in light armor. And facing my legendary glass sword. I won by using scrolls and shouts and poison and health potions. Can't even use restoration magic, they DPS me faster than I can heal.

This is ridiculous, even the blood dragons are easier than a bandit !

Lawl I made, enchanted and sold gold rings for Smithing, Enchanting and Speech. XD

And I also made a Daedric Bow.

Before upgrade - 57 damage
After Legendary upgrade - 178 damage (my jaw dropped)
After enchanting my Dragonscale gear with Fortify Archery - 562 damage (my jaw will never ever heal again)

Felt so cheap using it. Ancient Dragon? Down in less than 8 sneaky shots. Which means Lydia is back to being my pack mule again (no idea why I gave my pack mule Daedric armor though hahahahaha). :P

That is the one thing that annoys me about this game. The Dragons need to be harder, and the bandits should be a whole lot easier. There's no way a bandit should ever be tougher than a dragon.

Well, I managed to take down an Elder Dragon last night. Highlights of the match: it breathing frost on me, me retaliating by punching it in the face with a bow, causing it to stagger, it then taking off, circling round, me hitting it in the head (I think...either that, or it was the wing), it crashing to the ground, and sliding into a pillar. I also came to Irkngthand from the wrong direction, so I dropped down twice, slit a bandit's throat, took out my bow, and hit another bandit in the back of the neck, sending it flying forwards, and sliding into a wall. Am level 41, and I still haven't gotten the horn for the Greybeards.
Title: Re: The Elder Scrolls series

And i got it at something like level 15 lawl. The horn of jurgen windcaller, I mean. Because FUS RO is nothing compared to FUS RO DAH. Also, be prepared for an anticlimax on that mission.

Also my lydia died in a fight in Markath D: I felt genuinely sad. So I married that imperial girl from the riverwood store. And she brought me 1200 money last time I saw her. Yay.

Also, just got ebony smithing by powerleveling conjuration, which is extremely easy.

1-find a mudcrab, slaughterfish, skeever or something weak and aggressive

2-keep summoning a bound weapon, preferably a lowcost spell, sheathe it, summon it again, wash, rinse, repeat

3 - ???

4-PROFIT

And I just finished the imperial legion, and let Tullius kill Ulfric.

Currently trying to get Mehrunes's razor. I head mehrunes's shrine is a good place to farm and train your skillz on dremora.

And i got it at something like level 15 lawl.

You fail to realise the pull of shiny objects, and random stuff...at least to someone being a thief. I have the Blade of Woe and full Shrouded set, and I haven't even become part of the Dark Brotherhood. I had 100 pickpocket before doing the mission to get the Dragonstone, and I spend most of my time at 399/400 carry weight (I pumped all of my stuff into Health, and now I am really bad at carrying all of my items). which was especially annoying when somebody gave me an axe as a quest reward...if I can ever do a basic comic style, I may have to draw what I imagined when I saw that. But I have been having enough fun without getting the horn (I punched a dragon in the face while it was breathing ice on me, if that isn't fun and at least partially awesome, I don't know what is).

Either way, it's that time again. Sell 1000 gold worth of stuff, wait 2 days, repeat.

ANTICLIMAX AND GLASS CANNON GALORE

after all it is 13 levels under me...

seriously i poked the chaurus long distance with a dual firebolt to piss him off, trying not to attract the attention of the centurion golem. It works, and the beast attacks me. i don't see sh** because of the lack of light and me not casting a magelight. I FUS RO DAH him and he falls down by like 4 meters. Then his health bar is down by 75%. One sword blow and he dies before he can kill me in melee.

Morrowind is immensely fun, and is actually the one that introduced me to the series. It was also great fun if you had The Elder Scrolls Construction Set (mine came with it). Iron Dagger - max damage (255, as I remember), max range (10 as I remember), kill everyone. Never got round to actually making my own stuff. One thing that I distinctly remember on one of my many restarts was the weapons shop that has the barrel on show that had a heck of a lot of weapons in it. One time I remember dropping everything under a dock and going to jail, the other time, I remember being just about hidden and being able to get it with nobody noticing. Of course, this was me stealing things in broad daylight (I didn't have the sense to wait until night).

Dark brotherhood quest is both epic, heart-tugging near the end (if you have one though... and if it already isn't broken from slaughtering random civilians. My favorite has to be when you kill the bride) and bone-splittingly hilarious (if you have a taste for black humor). Also it gets you plenty of money.

Water breathing ? I do believe it's pretty much an useless thing, unless you're fishing for extended periods of time or doing something equally pointless.

Also I just made my argonian. Just need to give him a dragon name.

Khajit are for furries.

Khajit give bonuses to stealth based stats, and also have the highest bare handed attack, meaning that they are your best shot for ripping everything apart with your bare hands.

Bonuses don't really matter much when you focus on leveling up your intended stats anyway.

Which is why I must be an Imperial on my next playthrough. XD

I find that the main spawning places are the stables. Hell, a dragon appeared just before I could get on the carriage to get to the party, and I had literally nothing on at the time (I only had one armour set, and I had given it to the guy to store it). I'm pretty sure that I've fought most of the dragons at Riften Stables.

The first time I failed to get the killing shot in before they moved, I found it hilarious that they said that. Although it does prove that guards are wusses, they complain about taking an arrow to the knee, and yet bandits think that an arrow to the head is just their imagination, despite the fact that an arrow to the head would probably be a lot more painful.

I just did an extremely dumb thing with amusing consequences. Couldn't be bothered to sell all my stuff, so I put it all in my chest, accidentally put something away that I didn't want to get rid of, went back into the chest menu and accidentally hit take all. I then began to drop everything rather than putting it in the chest (not purposeful, take all immediately closes the menu, and I wanted to see just how over-encumbered I was). Obviously, all of the items caused a massive frame rate drop. I then backed out of the room and Fus Ro Dah'd all of the items. It was absolutely brilliant to watch.

Well, that's amusing. Exploited the Oghma Infinium glitch, all skills are level 100, the level cap is 81.5. With every skill at 100, it says that I am level 81, and the bar is half full. I now have 100 Magicka, 600 Health, and 400 Stamina. In hindsight, being the sneaky one that I am, I should've probably stopped focusing on health earlier so that I can hold more items, but oh well. The rest of the game will either be very easy or extremely difficult.

Gave my necessary weapons and armour to be taken to the Thalmor headquarters...stored the rest of my stuff in my house...went to get in the cart...a dragon attacks while I only have some friggin' party clothes on. The best I could do was stand there and resist all the fire breath attacks the dragon could throw at me (I'm a Dunmer, so the attacks were doing the same damage as my regeneration replaces.)

I then spammed Lightning Bolt, as the guards don't know what to do with bows and arrows. Presumably because they're used to being on the other end of them, judging by the amount of arrows that have been in knees throughout their lifetimes.

That happened to me too. I hid in the stables and waited for the dragon to die. Cowardly, I know...although I got bored of that, went out and started attacking (I had a fair chunk of health, I think I was level 40-something and had put everything up to that point into health).

The way you level up is very similar, though. Your individual skills increase as you use them, until you've leveled up enough skills, then you can level up. It's just that instead of perks, you chose a 'Governing skill', which can lead to you getting bonuses from higher level skills governed by them.

I only got Skyrim to offset getting an expensive gaming computer, and it hooked me to the Elder Scrolls series. To be honest once you're finished there very little replay value except for playing as different classes, and that begins to get tedious quickly, as well.

Yeah, clearing out dungeons will get tedious after a while. Clearing out dungeons without getting your pack mule follower killed will also get tedious after a while. So I just walk along Skyrim's border (no sprinting, just walking), and occassionally noclip out of the border when I see some cool stuff (like the Red Mountain).

Magic seems like it is only really fun when you have the best spells (The Master level spells are just badass). Although my friend got the Dawnguard expansion (he is a Vampire Lord now) and he showed me that he could use Telekinesis to fling Giants, which was infinitely awesome. I have yet to play a mage...or indeed start a new character that isn't a thief that tries to avoid hurting people who aren't hostile to him (as well as talking his way out of things and attempting to do things for free wherever possible (like in every other open world game that allows me to sneak around and steal things)). For some reason, I have never had any luck with face to face combat in any Elder Scrolls game (although, Skyrim's did seem to be a lot easier, and Oblivion's was easier than Morrowind's (unless I was just critically underlevelled, or something)).

Skyrim is much easier to navigate than Morrowind.
In Skyrim you can fast travel anywhere you have been before on the map, in Morrowind you have to travel via horse and carraige, or poorly marked paths. The simple awnser is I wanted to enjoy Morrowwind as much as I Enjoyed Skyrim & Oblivion but found it too confusing. I am sure there is a great game under there somewhere so I may try it again (Just not on the Xbox)on the PC with a graphics enhancing mod (To see the paths better).

If Skyrim had a 2 player co-op capability I would be sooooo happy.
