Did all the last few years of Halloween stuff in the space of about 2 hours last night. Including 2 piles of curses and opening a crate. Joyous times. SPy with Voodoo Soul, Scarecrow and Gibus looks awesome.

I picked up TF2 for the first time yesterday.  Do you get used to the frantic-ness of the game?  Because I got killed like every 5 seconds on the training mission no matter which class I chose, and all the sights and sounds make it impossible for me to find something to shoot at.

On this particular mission (capture the point, I'm on offence) there's this narrow doorway that my team needs to go through, but the enemy's got a level 3 Sentry that kills me in one hit as soon as I go through the door.  What should I do?

Stop posting on GTM and get on with it? :P

Simple options are either send a spy or get a uber/heavy combo.  Either should take it out easily. Or you could bounce demo grenades off of a wall and into the sentry if the planets are aligned just so. Your mileage may vary with the spy tactic depending on how smart the bots on the training mission are, though.

And you get used to the franticness! That's what makes it fun.

I tend to spam rockets as soldier when there's a sentry I don't like around. But yes, you get used to the insanity, it's what brings you back.

It's crazy. That's why the game has been designed with such clear colour pallettes and character outlines, because in the heat of battle you should be able to know what you're shooting fairly quickly. The dustbowl mission usually has several methods of getting to the capture point, not all of which will be dominated by sentries.

Stickies. Stickies are the way forward. Put 3 stickies on the wall next to it, and it should boom. Just place them there out of sight, and you should be a ok.

Another thing that's on my mind is, can the other team hear what I'm saying (on the mic)?  I've seen some videos where it looks like they can, and that seems real stupid, because it means we can't discuss tactics or anything.

Yeah, voice chat is global, I normally talk with others on Teamspeak if tactics are required. Hardly any point talking to people you don't know, they would normally not listen.

I'm new to multiplayer games as a whole, I honestly have no idea how the dynamic works, full stop.... apart from the popular media's portrayal of online gamers as potty-mouthed racist griefers.

Your best bet if you really want to discuss tactics is to use the built-in team text chat. Can't remember the default key, but that's kinda handy if you wanna say 'can a demo go blow the sentry' or 'WHY DO WE HAVE 6 SPIES'.
