Title: Stupidly long/annoying bosses in games!
Post by: Gazea2 on July 24, 2010, 06:05:17 AM
Game bosses are getting longer and longer. Here a few super looooooooooooong ones:

http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2008/08/pandemonium-war/ (http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2008/08/pandemonium-war/)

Above is Pandemonium Warden. It is stupidly long, I mean, 18 hours?! Are they trying to kill people?

http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Long_Gui (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Long_Gui)

Here is another one. Look at it's HP! Only addicted players that have lots of time can beat that. Here is one of their battles:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDSu8vPa-Ho#ws (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDSu8vPa-Ho#ws)

O_O

Then there's this:

http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Trema (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Trema)

Another stupidly long boss... Have you noticed anything yet? Most of these are coming from Square Enix and the Final Fantasy series. I love playing Final Fantasy but the bosses are becoming too long. I have beaten some of them, though, like Trema and Ozma from IX.

So, discuss any stupidly long bosses here.

Hmm... I can't think off the top of my head any long bosses. Interesting observations, though.

Discuss any stupidly long/annoying bosses here. That is the point.

The bosses from Dragon Warrior Monsters (GBC version).  It's a turn-based RPG and they don't tell you how much HP the boss monster has.  You can spend all day hacking away at them without knowing whether you're making any progress.

Most of the Mario And Luigi 3 bosses are insanely long. It took me a half hour to beat that thing in the flab zone!

The only really tediously long bosses I can rememer are from when I still lpayed WoW on private Funservers. There was a custom boss called Ultimate Onyxia, freaking 6 billion HP! Took about 2 hours with me and 3 others with the custom super powered swords the servers creators also had made, I think they had about 200 000 DPS(damage per second) but really now, how freaking large group are you going to need for that Pandemonium Warden?! O_o

One I can remember is Trunkle from Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga on the GBA. Until I found out you could attack the sprout on his head, I just kept attacking the body, eventually running out of HP and Bros Points whilst he just sat on his arse and did that "Inhale" move where he recovers health!

He's long dead now though. And I spat loogies on his grave for it.

Stupidly long? Look no further than Radiant Silvergun. Some of those things are 20 minutes+ to beat!

Also trying do win the Deathborn race in F-Zero GX is next to impossible.

EDIT: Hey, I have 1111 posts!

http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Absolute_Virtue (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Absolute_Virtue)

Absolute Virtue.

Apparently it has been in FFXI for 7 years, and no group has ever legitimately defeated it. People have used a exploit to beat it ("Wall of Justice") but they were permanently banned and the exploit was fixed. It isn't as long as Pandemonium Warden (As AV has a 2 hour time limit) but come on:

Quote
Absolute Virtue is an Aern (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Aern) High Notorious Monster (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Notorious_Monster) in Final Fantasy XI (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Final_Fantasy_XI), and is the hardest enemy in the game, and bar-none the hardest boss in all of the Final Fantasy (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Final_Fantasy_%28Series%29) series, as it has never once been legitimately beaten in its current form by anyone in the world.    In 2008, the development team released an "educational" video with   hints on how to defeat Absolute Virtue.  This primarily involved the use   of 2-Hour abilities in tandem with Absolute Virtue's use, somehow   locking them.  The video (along with the vast, sweeping majority of   content put out by the developers) is horrendously vague, involving   simply showing different parts of what seem like multiple attempts at   the monsters by developer characters immune to its attacks, often   zooming in at the dialogue box as if to show players something   important.  This has often been made fun of by the endgame community for   its ridiculousness and complete lack of aid to the players (e.g.   "Clearly we are not zooming in on the text hard enough, otherwise we   would have beaten it by now.")

Quote
After the weakening patch that was moreover a response to the news   reports filed against the marathon kill attempts of comparable foe Pandemonium Warden (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Pandemonium_Warden) ,  Absolute Virtue now only has some 70,000 HP, far less than other   Notorious Monsters in the game, and significantly less than the   strongest enemies in other Final Fantasy titles (Yiazmat (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Yiazmat_%28Final_Fantasy_XII%29)   comes immediately to mind).  What makes Absolute Virtue so   "impossible," though, is its unique way to stack multiple 2-Hour   abilities (essentially Final Fantasy XI's Job System's strongest, most devastating techniques available to players...

Quote
One such ability, Benediction (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Benediction), the White Mage (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/White_Mage_%28Final_Fantasy_XI%29)   2-Hour, is especially frustrating, as it will heal Absolute Virtue's HP   to full instantaneously at any point in the conflict, as well as remove   its negative status effects.  It can do this multiple times.

The above has caused many people to quit on the spot - allegedly atleast 5 people immediately quit when after 30 hours of "marathon" fighting, AV used Benediction to recover 46613/70000 HP. (I guess that was from before there was a 2 hour time limit or something, or maybe they were trying over and over)

Quote
Consequently, during brief spans of time, Absolute Virtue became   susceptible to various means of killing via crude exploitation of   terrain and the popular "Dark Knight Zerg" strategy (right after the   weakening patch) used on many other monsters in the game.  The first   wave of kills by illegitimate means took place via use of a terrain   exploit, coined the "Wall of Justice", wherein players positioned   themselves behind a wall that had unique programming enabling them to   attack Absolute Virtue but preventing the opposite.  For completely   unexplained reasons, game masters decided that users of this exploit   were to be permanently banned from play, and the wall was quickly   re-coded without mention in update notes.  Regardless, because of these   brief windows of opportunity, some of Absolute Virtue's dropped treasure   items do exist in-game and make their rounds in the Real-Money-Trade   community, often selling for tens of millions of Gil, or on illegal auction websites sometimes for more than $1,000.

Quote
Today, the playerbase has essentially given up entirely on trying to beat the monster...

I remember when I played AQ, once you got to about lvl 50 the monsters would have about 1000 to 10000 health when you could only do about 20 damage each turn.

You might be doing something wrong. I'm not exactly level 50 (And I stopped playing regardless) but I believe my cousins are,  and they make short work of monsters. Maybe because they have Guardian feature moves, but anyway.

BUMP!

Ahh... I've got some more for you. :P

First of all, Penance from Final Fanasy X.

http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Penance_(Final_Fantasy_X) (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Penance_(Final_Fantasy_X))

12 million HP (13 million if you count the arms) and the arms regenerate every few turns! It takes over an hour to kill. Wow.

Next, the dark aeons.

http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Dark_Aeon (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Dark_Aeon)

Each one is very fast and can hit hard. They can kill every one of your characters in one hit.

Then, there's Hades.

http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Hades_(Final_Fantasy_IX) (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Hades_(Final_Fantasy_IX))

He can hit hard and instantly kill characters.

And finally, Ozma.

http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Ozma (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Ozma)

Very powerful, again, and one of the hardest bosses in the series.

Guess what? They are all from the Final Fantasy series! :P

Crawmerax the Invincible from Borderlands. Players are capped at level 61, but this is level 64, has ridiculously powerful attacks, and is surrounded by a ton of level 61-62 monsters that chip away at your health until Crawmerax blows you away. Unless you use the terrain to glitch the boss out, it's the most impossible boss fight I've encountered.

http://borderlands.wikia.com/wiki/Crawmerax_the_Invincible (http://borderlands.wikia.com/wiki/Crawmerax_the_Invincible)

Granted, it's nowhere near as long as many of the other RPG bosses, such as the ones mentioned from FF, but it is stupidly annoying.

Try playing any Metroid game on Hypermode difficulty. For me, it's near impossible, especially the bosses. Usually in the first minute of the battle, half of my health is already gone. And it's a pain in the @$$ to avoid damage.

My guess is that you have to attack its weakpoint for massive damage.

And that still barely does anything to its health, even hitting upwards of 3000 damage per hit.

It does do alot of damage if you have a powerful gun.

I have defeated him about 4-5 times although i had 3 team-mates but i still done it.

The trick is to kill of all his minions that attack you and then shoot his weak spots.

It takes about 5-10 hits to a single weak spot with a powerful gun and around 20 with a weaker gun and so on.

What console do you have it for ?

Any boss in a Yugioh game usually takes a lot of skill and time to beat, but are absolutely annoying to heck, ESPECIALLY the last bosses on Yugioh Capsule Monster Colluseum and DungeonDice Monsters. Considering that normally a battle on those can take upwards of HALF AN HOUR, the bosses require you to ALLWAYS be on your guard and be prepared for anything, FOR A WHOLE DAMN HOUR. And the game is boring as it is, so sitting infront of your GBA or PS2 slaving away HOUR AFTER HOUR just to read a 7 minute long credits screen IS NOT WORTH IT. The only thing that makes it even redeemable is the Near Win music at the end of the GBA Yugioh. Might sound like crap through your speakers, but muffle it, like the GBA speakers would, and it sounds awesome.

Annoying boss of mine: http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Evrae (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Evrae)
So annoying. But as I play FFX today the final bosses are very easy for me, because in my game Yuna has Holy and ton of Magic. I have the North America version so I don't have Dark Aeons and stuff.

:O Another Final Fantasy player! Which ones do you have?

Anyway, Evrae isn't too hard as long as you remember his attack pattern and keep changing how far away the airship is away from him.

@Doomkiller - I used to play it as well but I don't anymore.
