Title: Steam warning
Post by: Avalanche on September 25, 2011, 01:54:08 PM
I just got a message from one of my freinds:

Colonel Bill: : -Gust-: WARNING! .... Listen here. If two people by name (NisseFar and Nivek) wants to add you to their list, not accept. It is a virus.
Tell everyone on your list because if someone on your list adds him or her, you get it too. It is a hard drive killer and a very horrible virus. Please pass it on to everyone on your list. We need to find out who is using this account.
Says it all!
So watch out.

You can't get get malicious content of any kind if you add users. This is no different than other instant messaging services.

QFT this.

If some could already bring over a virus trough Steam, then he would have already infected everyone. But since this is impossible, I'll call this thing fake.

They may have a virus, but I'm pretty sure that they have to send you a file or link of some sort to give you a virus (like with the various messenger ones).

Oh yeah, I forgot about those things, like the one that has been passing through Facebook to do with the 'fact' that it will start charging as of midnight unless you post said chainmessage before midnight.

I rarely get friend requests, so...

not that big of an issue for me, even if it is true.

Why would it possibly be true? Go research Computer Defense, you'll find it's nigh impossible

The only way it would be possible is if they sent you a file (such as an executable disguised as a picture) which then put a virus on your computer. Or sent you a link and said 'Just sign in here and you will get free games', or said link had a virus in it.

Yep. And actually sending files is also impossible since Steam doesn't have that function.
