Title: Retro Video Games
Post by: SteveM4 on March 29, 2014, 01:11:27 PM
Right, so who here plays old retro games. And while RA2 is old, I don't think it counts as retro.

We're talking <1999 here, DreamCast allowed also.

I have a bit of a collection of retro games. Not much compared to some collectors, but more than your average person.

Oldest thing I've got is the Mario Bros Game And Watch (where they're putting the boxes in the van or whatever). Don't have any other retro consoles but I use Virtual Console quite a lot to play Sin And Punishment, Super Smash Bros 64, Lylat Wars and Super Metroid.

also today i went to my uncles house in okc today and he gave me his old genesis and nes. sh** was so cash

That's the best part of retro-gaming. Some people will literally give that sh** away. I don't know how many times I've found games or even systems sitting on the curb during town-wide clean up.

That and finding stuff insanely cheap. I got two complete in box TI-99/4A computers for a dollar a piece.

The problem is the people that have the mindset "It's old, so it must be worth it's weight in gold." Find sh** like SMB/DH cartridges for $20 a piece. Hell no.

That's why I don't trust them, look in a Game or a Computer exchange, They test them and they're generally cheap if their bad or don't play well

As for the rest of my collection, I've got all these babies:

2 ZX Spectrums, Nintendo's Colour Game System, Amiga 128 and an Oric 1 and a few others. Want to get a NES, SNES and Mega Drive when I'm older. Possibly a Pong console as well. Maybe Collecovision :3

Red, Blue, and Yellow all still work. Silver, on the other hand, has a dead save battery. Once I finish moving, I should probably replace it.

lol i have the expansion
>huns

aztecs... well it's all about MOAR infantry and monk spam backed up by siege onagers. tbh i don't have the full aztec experience because I only used infantry and monks without siege onager support.

About the expansion pack there's one thing that I don't like and it's Heresy. It nerfs monks so badly, it's not even funny; they are just useful for healing and pissing off Persians now.

Actually, only some nations get it, thats what annoys me about being the britons, Longarchers vs monk fight: converted...
 :rage :rage :rage

Siege onagers are op, if they have built into the forest you can delete the forest and sneak into their base and they do quite a lot of damage.
So are aztec monks, I had a group of 25 and had them all convert the enemy's troops, 75% of them got converted :trollface
The Jaguar warriors are ridiculous, having 25 attack creams even a castle  :trollface
So yeah, the Triple Aztec experiance is a must
Title: Re: Retro Video Games
Post by: Naryar on May 31, 2014, 07:08:49 AM
dude you lose LONGBOWMEN against monks ? how do you even do that ? clearly you ain't shooting the monks enough.

If you micromanage a blob of siege onagers yes they are good... but send some cavalry against them and oh sh!t, here's my onagers firing at themselves and getting raped by 2 cavalry units

Aztec monks should just be countered by siege onagers. And castles. I mean, sneak two or three against a group of 25 monks, see them losing half or more the monks.

I don't remember the jaguar warrior having that much attack, 20 maybe... 25 against infantry, possibly.

but seriously mangudais + siege onagers + siege rams = break your enemy like no tomorrow.

Well longbow men have a base range of 7 odd and monks have 9 Iirc, plus I was having it attack the monk while the other troops were attacking the enemy's troops, outranging is key, also I find Teutons, Chinese, Byzantines and the Turks really good

I pretty much always used the Byzantines when I played. I just found them really good for whatever reason, iirc they get bombard towers which I always lined my base with.

Anyone else ever get the Age of Chivalry mod for AoE II? I didn't expect much but it was actually a very good mod.

Wow, the first pc game that I played came out in 1997, when MMX was the ultimate in graphical processing technology. POD looked so amazing back then.

Then again, Terminal Velocity came out in 1995. GOG.com is awesome, letting me play games I played on my first pc :D

I haven't but i might look into it, did anyone find the hidden part in AoEII campaign? (I forget which one) I found a mod which allowed you to use it in map creator

Hidden part? Never heard of it, I'll look it up.
Also, did you ever play Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds? It used the same game engine AoE did, so it played basically the same, and was really good fun actually.

Edit: From gamewinners.com :
"Saxon Revolt scenario
There is a hidden scenario named "The Saxon Revolt". To enable it, enter the "Goodies" folder in the game directory. Instructions for enabling it are in that folder."

Was this it?

I used to do that all the time. They'd surrender only after they've used all their food making new villagers that just die anyway.

I found an amazing casino map online, with an awesome betting system so you could bet gold on if the villagers would survive the onslaught of wolves. That was fun :)

It's something called A 'sea wall', it looks like the paliside wall and you can use it on water, you just have to get the mod to unlock it, it only appears on 1 campaign mission:

we should start an AoE2 thread somewhere. maybe i'll do a angry frenchman review of one of my battles.

and persians are pretty nice. especially when you unleash 50 elephants (hell even 20) on an unsuspecting enemy. at one point in a deathmatch there were at least 4 different colors of war elephants on the same screen due to 2 Persian players and monks.

these things are living battery rams seriously, only things that beat them are horse archers, judicious use of onagers and monks.
