PS2 Help
« on: May 19, 2012, 10:17:34 PM »
I just got a refurbished PS2 Slimline today with four games, but one gets the Red Screen of Death. However, the other 3 work.

You're trying to use a playstation 2, I honestly don't think there's any helping you.

No, really i think the disk is probably junk.

Hard Bot, I'm sorry to tell you this, but the lazer on a PS2 Slim is bollocks. I had scratchless games that wouldn't work with it. I recommend you get a fat PS2; Cheaper and a lot more efficient.

Fotepx, that's a load of bull. The lazer from the slim is just fine. Never had trouble with mine, friends and fellow SAGS clan members never had trouble with theirs.

HardBot, check the state of the disc and maybe try to get it 'cleaned', like MKB said. Maybe some gameshops offer a disc cleaning service, if so, go there.

The disc is probably just scratched as heck. Or it has a blue back. Sometimes discs with a blue back don't get read.

Bump: I am convinced I the disc got the Red Screen of Death because there were 2 scratches on the small PLASTIC RING surrounding the hole in the disc. Anyway, I forgot tell you it was the disc for Hot Wheels: Beat That!, which does not have a blue back.

>PS2 has a red screen of death
I've gone through 3(well, 2 and a half) PS2s. not one of them has had that problem.

But the scratches were DEEP, coming from bottom to top.

Only the early PS2s had problems with the lasers IIRC. I should know because I owned one the early models (doesn't work anymore)

Cuz new PS3s can't play PS2 discs and old PS3s are dropping like flies?

I already have a PS3.
Then why bother with the ps2?

There are GAMES I want to play on it badly, and my PS3 can't read PS2 discs.

Had a slim for 8 years and only had a problem after I started using it as a DVD player as well. DVDs are a PS2's worst enemy. They make the laser read more information than it was meant to, causing it to overheat and eventually stop working.

Another issue I have heard is that a PS2's laser will often weaken after a while and begin to get picky about the games it will play. Simpler games that were earlier releases may be readable, but newer releases may not be.

The only reason the Slim PS2 is supposedly less efficient is because it has a more powerful processor which would pull more power. Also in the newest slims that can still be bought brand new for $100 no longer have the brick in the power cord, whilst the older slims did.

I bought a brand new PS2 just a few weeks ago... There is no real evidence that the "fat" PS2 is any better in any way.

It would depend on how weak the laser has gotten. If it is pretty graphically intensive on the system, probably not.

As a reference, what other games have you tried on it and gotten to run?
