So it is exactly like Minecraft except less straining on the computer? So if Minecraft had a 'Super Ultra Low' setting for graphics, then it would be Minetest? Trying to say it is not a ripoff is like me making something like Devil May Cry, except replacing all the models with really rubbish models, releasing it for free and saying it isn't a ripoff because it is designed to work on older machines.

It even has the same UI and everything.

And those totally item sprites totally don't look exactly like Minecraft ones.

It is.

Anyway, i'd give this my 2 cents in, because i have minecraft, and i think this would be nice.

Same for the torch sprite, and the other sprites look to just be very slightly changed Minecraft Sprites. But it's like a free Minecraft without having to pirate it. Not seen any screenshots that show mobs, but that doesn't mean anything. It seems to have some things from the Tekkit side of things too.

And this game is definitely not Minecraft. I mean seriously, look how different it looks.

Its coded in C++ and Lua.
And its not just the graphics
Minecraft servers need 4 GB of RAM
Minetest servers can run comfortably on 128 MB of RAM

Just because it is coded in a different language and can run at lower specs, does not make it any less like Minecraft. It looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, tastes like a duck, it is a duck. It looks like Minecraft (heck, it even uses the same sprites), plays like Minecraft, and has mods like Minecraft, that are easy to install like (most of) Minecraft's ones (the only one I can remember being a pain was the Uranium mod), the only difference is the language that it's coded it, that it can run at lower specs, and is free (I can't talk about sounds since I haven't played Minetest). You can't deny that it is a carbon copy of Minecraft. To do so is silly.

Edit: Just did a quick play, and it sounds the same, possibly lower quality sounds.

PAHAHAHAHA

no.

My server has 1GB of memory to play with. 4GB can easily cope with 60+ people on the server, with animals, explosions etc. Hell, i've seen servers with 256mb for a few friends to mess about on. 4GB is overkill. Besides, what makes this game 'better' than Minecraft? Just because it can run on old machines doesn't mean much at all.

Yeah, I have a buddy that was had a server on a Linux laptop with 2GB of RAM, with only 1GB allocated for Minecraft.

Minecraft has a legion versus that community.

Besides, the recent updates they've made to minecraft have made it much easier to mod (in the sense of adding mods to it, we leave the whole modding business to the people who actually can)

I'm guessing that by 'better' he means kinder, as in the people there aren't looking to fill the creatiom that took you several hours to build with TNT and find a way to make you unknowingly flip the switch/flip the switch themselves. Or fill your house/mineshaft with bedrock, or something.

Griefers are going to grief. I don't consider them as part of the legion of minecraft players.

And besides, I'm talking about on the forums. The people are pretty kind and helpful last time I checked.

I know, but it depends on whether you go by observing the community, or whether you take stories about a few people and then say that's the majority of players.

You don't mod. Minecraft is also easy to mod. You cannot compare the two, as you have no idea what you're talking about

Define 'better', in the context of a community.

It's not full of 6 year olds, good sire. If anything, those 6year olds will more likely be looking for a free minecraft clone for crappy laptops.

I think he gets that from all the videos on Youtube of young kids playing Minecraft. Which are from the Xbox version of Minecraft.

I'm pretty sure this game was only made because the programmer wanted to chLlenge himself. If he has made it run a little better than Minecraft, then good for him. However the only reason I can see for playzooki liking this is because it's free. Or because he's a hipster.
Title: Re: Minetest
Post by: playzooki on September 01, 2013, 08:01:20 AM
The reason he made it is because his friends said he couldnt.

Im playing tjis because
1) i dont like the way to pay for minecraft.
2)Sometimes, it is fun to mess about with this. Once, someone set airto flammable and set the world on fire.
3)Its open source.
4)I dont really like the potions and dimensions in minecraft.
5) IMO mesecons> redstone.
Title: Re: Minetest
Post by: Badger on September 01, 2013, 09:05:07 AM
1) Fair enough, you don't want to pay for MC
2) Fair enough
3) And? You're not a programmer/modder, being open-source means nothing for you.
4) Dimensions? And you can just use MCnostalgia to go back to beta/alpha before potions
5) From the sounds of it mesecons = redstone

3) Actually i an. Ill show my lol fail block from 0.4.6 when i get on my computer. I dont tend to release mods, i just do it for fun. I am making a rickroll block which plays never gonna give you up and kills you.
4) Nether andend and all that. Ive tried classic, didnt really like it.
5) Microcontrollers, luacontrollers, lightstones, logic gates. Dunno if you get sticky pistons in MC.

You do get sticky pistons. And a lot of those other bits sound a lot like other Minecraft components - for example, Logic Gate = Redstone Comparator, Lightstone = Redstone Lamp, etc.
Title: Re: Minetest
Post by: Badger on September 01, 2013, 05:02:49 PM
Wait, luacontrollers? Lua as in the scripting language?

Anyways, my main point is why play a game that's trying to be identical to Minecraft when you can just play Minecraft?

Edit: BTW, what is this game coded in? C++? C#?
Title: Re: Minetest

The main engine is in c++, the mods are in Lua.

And i play this because i want to. I have played minecraft - and i didnt like it

BTW, lightstone is those lights in firestorm.

"hack"

You mean mod. Besides, try making something useful. I can put a rickroll texture on a note block and change some sound files around, and i know nothing about C++, Java or modding.
