This is an accurate description of the reactions of the people who first played it:

Not trying to sound like a fanboy, (this comes from Daniel Floyd) but if you consider the FPS genre to be games like Halo and CoD, than it seems less diverse. Now if you add in games like Bioshock, Portal, Team Fortress 2, and Fallout 3, than the genre seems more diverse than you may think.

Unfortunately FPS's are becoming less original. CoD appears to be recycling old ideas, TF2 is running dry for me, Fallout is just a repackaged ES:Oblivion, Portal's a puzzle adventure FPS, and games like Metroid Prime have stopped being made.
Metroid Prime is probably my favorite FPS 'cus it's not just a multiplayer mode including some cr*ppy campaign. GoldenEye007 managed it, now why can't modern shooters?

Maybe some FPS' that come out in the future will be more original. I guess some franchises (CoD is the best example) try not to change that much, because they think fans will not like it.

I liked BO's single player, since it was actually diverse unlike MW2's...

007s was pretty good, got to drive a tank, and the environments were good.
