RFS' DSL proof-of-concept robots
« on: May 12, 2014, 01:21:24 AM »
Folks were talking about alligators and robots in El Chickenado's thread today and while "The Chickenado's" robot was cool and all, I felt like a real crocophile had to come in and show him how it's done.

Here's Gatorphilia:

Under the hood shot provided for no reason other than it seems to be customary to do so. Nothing fancy, 2WD and a Judge burst with a stupid amount of attention paid to getting the spike strips to sit just right on the chassis. I don't know how well it fights -- probably pretty poorly -- but on a good day I can break the lifting apparatus in the test garage and the robot can self right.

I'm proud of the skin. I made sure that under the jaw skirt there was a gator mouth, and there's something else under the tail because I am a horrible, horrible person.

I'll post more robots later, namely the ones that I entered into MassimoV's BattleBots event once their mysterious air is done away with.

edit: Wait... is this meant to be a serious bot? With piglet drive and just a few ants?

looks pretty cool. Does it clamp down or does the jaw act like a hammer?

There's two copies of the robot in my team actually, one of them with the burst motor wired to be a flipper and the other to be a crusher. Havok tends to not like the crusher, though. :(

Originally I wanted the tail to be the flipper and the mouth to be the crusher but I ran out of weight. (It's a MW.)

You planning on making any Stock bots soon RFS?
Old Stock Showcase: https://gametechmods.com/forums/index.php?topic=6590.0

I've moved to other forums. Under a different name. This is where it all began.

I do not know, I might. I recently made a few bots for old time's sake but my free time outside of work is severely limited so I don't have a lot of time to play RA2 unfortunately. (Literally like maybe just under an hour on a given day.)

dat weight allotment tho

(It's all the spike strips for decoration. Because of those I couldn't have a burst motor in the tail either.)

>Piglets

cmon RFS you can do better than that... At least magmotors or something, you have space...

It looks really cool, just... piglets...

Also I think it needs two or three more ants to fully power the judge burst , not sure how its battery drain is

Space yes weight no. (It's a little under 3kg from being 400.) :P The magmotors will put it over. The issue is all the spike strips; they're the reason why the tail is on a skirt hinge instead of also being on a motor.

Looks nice. It's a nice concept, that's about it. I also know nothing about battery consumption other than apparently you need one ant per motor for some bizarre programming oversight?

One ant per spin motor. Burst motors still require full power as listed in the description.

Also I thought it was a heavyweight/cruiserweight, not a middleweight :P

If the rule is 1 ant per spin-type motor... at what point does it become more economical (weight-wise) to use one of the 15 or 20+ kg batteries? Or is that part of the programming oversight in that it's a battery-to-motor ratio that causes the magic to happen?

edit: Also yes Gatorphilia is a middleweight. I built him potentially to enter MassimoV's BattleBots 9 tournament however I opted to enter a different robot instead. I was proud of the design and skin and didn't want to keep it to myself so I gave the bot a better skin (after seeing the discussion about El Chickenado's "Florida BBQ" robot) and posted it here. :)

I'm not sure about the oversight but it normally only becomes economical to use a larger battery if you're using really powerful burst motors. The 20kg batteries aren't at all efficient in DSL 2.1. I'm not exactly sure about battlepacks, but I don't make a lot of big flippers so I wouldn't know.

Come to think of it a lot of guys that used to make a lot of flippers vanished recently. SM doesn't post much, KM left again, and Vertigo hasn't posted in months...

so this is a serious bot then.

As I said before don`t use piglet and use more ants. Also save weight by using multi extenders instead of baseplate anchors

Never use piglets for wheel drive, use mulit extenders cause there lighter than base anchors.

I shall take up the art of flipper building.

Prepare to be dissappointed.

Anyways, yea I think you can fit in a TWMR drive or a flat motor if you exchange the anchors with Multi Extenders

EDIT: might wanna lower the ME's a bit so the tip doesn't poke out the chassis. Otherwise the razor strips look like they're floating. (Found out the hard way)

I've been building bots but a lot of them are still "under wraps" and I'd like to have them debuted at the various AI tournaments that crop up in the community. I still have four unknown bots in BattleBots 9 and a pair of LW's for Minor Inconveniences (though the LW's were literally quick 20-minute hacks to fill a slot). Still, I feel badly for having nothing to post, so here is a Super Heavyweight that simply did not make the cut for the BattleBots 9 event.

This is The Infinity Gene, and it's a 1600kg stomper:

It looks really great when it moves, I was inspired by a steam-powered "centipede" type robot I had seen several years ago (can't seem to find a video, sorry). Pretty much almost half of the weight was dumped into the walking system. I had to cut some corners (I wanted each of the feet to be an "X" made of spikes but that wouldn't work) so the robot was a little slow and sluggish, plus the weapon was an afterthought and I didn't have the weight allotment to really make something out of it. I ended up coming up with a better proof-of-concept design to enter in BB9 so Infinity Gene got the axe.

I doubt I will enter it in any contests so I've decided to share this design here. :)

all these copals hnnng

pretty sure your batteries drain very fast with 19 motors though...

also yeah, a hammer with a grip and turnspeed that low ? I know it's made to be cool but still derp.
