Quote's DSL Showcase: It's not a pop up again!
« on: April 09, 2014, 03:36:25 AM »
Hi, so after nerd3 reminded me that this game does exist and has a mod I decided to try out the game again.
Previously I gave up on DSL because I found it hard, but here I am now.
Also, I have been lurking this forum for quite a while now

I built 2 bots, both of them are pop-ups
Bot 1:

Armor: Titanium 1
It has some influence from Team Dragon's heavyweight and uses that angled panel thing as a flipper. There was also a metal hinge with a small wedge on the front, but I removed it and forgot to put it back on.
The metal sheet on top was supposed to stop hammers and that stuff and it sorta worked.
Speaking about the front, it was my attempt to basically stop damage coming. it worked most of the time.

Here's the inside:

It's uses two npc fasts and hypno wheels.

Bot 2:

Armor: Titanium 1
This one is much closer to the weight limit.
I basically looked at pon2n and said, "that's some good armor there"
so I basically did that to my bot.
It uses the emergency flipper instead of the small wedge because I found it more useful when it is bigger. It also still manages to get under bots. (some of the time, i could use some advice on wedging)
I also put that angled skirt up top because I thought it looked cool and I just had 3kg left to use.

Here's the inside:

(A red battery is missing here)

After removing the armor, the bot weights 699.9 kg.
This one is a 4WD: Hypno wheels are at the front and slipper bottom are at the back. Why did I use slipperbottoms? I thought it looked cool. :U
I was better on the extender work here. (Except for that back part)
The back part is just the extra wide ram. There is also some titanium sheets (or whatever you call it) on the bottom of the bot, since I noticed the back mostly took damage.

here's a feat I managed to do

this one was much more easier than I thought, I just had to run under it 2 times and then it just died.

i also beat emergency with it.

so those are the bots i have made so far. Any critique or suggestions for it?

Firstly welcome to the forums.

Second, they are some decent robots for a newbie. They are definitely not generic in anyway and the extender work is pretty good.

I'm gonna shut up now because I'm not the right guy to give advice by any stretch of the imagination.

Actually I have been playing this game for quite a while now.
I played ra2 since like 2 years ago but never really went into the mod intil now.

Woah, those are seriously cool looking bots. Nice work :)

If I remember right those JX bursts are not the best to use, BSGs are better, but I can't really think of anything else right now.

When I say newbie I meant newbie to the forums. We usually get people who have played for a while but still don't know the best things for their robot. You however seem to have some knowledge already which means you could become a strong builder in the future if you listen to the feedback that you get.

welcome to gtm
they look nice for first post bots. you might want to use bsg bursts. also ant batteries will save you some weight as far as i know. take out the huge orange one for that.

What can I do with the extra space in my chassis? Cut it down?

yes. you should make the chassis smaller and use the weight you have left on weapons and/or armor

...also, are you guys sure this bsg motor is good? It looks flimsy and slow when I use it.

I mean, it's great for my flipper, but im not too sure about the weapon part

edit: I don't know, I tried using a different motor and it does the same thing too after I looked at both of them closely, must be because of the sound.

Welcome to GTM fellow Cave Story player! :D

You can get rid of the rear protection, as all AI bots don't attack the back. With the extra weight you can get some more front armor, those shell panels won't last long against most of today's standard bots.

One things I noticed is that some bots don't even use armor, they just use a load of weapons all around.

another edit: but anyways those bsgs retract really slowly whenever I fire the burst. Sometimes they just stay there. Could be because of the weight of the steel extenders and razors?

I made a third version of Electric Ladyland

still uses titanium 1 armor

The chassis is much more smaller and uses the bsg motors.
On the front outside is a flail, so if my wedge falls off, i can become a shell spinner... lol. (But by then I would have already lost the match.) It's great for ramming too.

I like the idea behind the flails, but those motors aren't BSGs dude :P

BSGs are the green burst motors.

oh haha, well i fixed that now.

not related to the motors, I realized that the bot really sucks at self-righting
the second bot didnt suck at doing that, but the third one does and I have no idea how to fix it

I made yet another pop up; i tried making different stuff but they all failed

the extender work is too heavy, considering the fact that only 1% of it is exposed

Having those razors so high up won't do you any good. Also the back razors cutting through the CB and the other BSGs isn't realistic and thus is illegal in normal DSL building. Though you have something good going here. Oh and one more thing, I recomend for your wedge that you use an 80cm titanium sheet on a metal hinge as it will be more effective.

I think the problem here is that you're trying to make your popup too compact. Popups actually benefit from being very large. Try having a thin |_|  chassis shape.
How you make Alarm Clock Pizza is:
Step 1: You buy an alarm clock from the store, and then you have to break it and put it in the sauce.
Step 2: Fold the sauce in 5 slices and put it in the dough.
Step 3: Paint the eggs with a pitcher of a clock showing what time you want to wake up and eat pizza for breakfast.
Step 4: Put the eggs in the dough.
Step 5: Make it flat into a round shape and draw the time you want on it.
Step 6: Put some old steel to prevent other peple from stealing it.
Step 7: Make it flat and cut into 60 slices 1 for each minute in 1 our.
Step 8: Put in the oven set the timer to 30048813.2884 seconds and put the temperature on 'Volcano' setting.
Step 9: If you think it is take to long, then get yor alarm clock and set it to now so that it will ring and you can take it out.
Step 10: Take it out uv the uvin wen it is redy and go to bed. In the morning eat pizza and also eat yor hands bi mistake.

These are some cool bots.  I like the spinner shell as armor.  Might not be the strongest option (actually it definitely isn't), but it looks great.
