the skirt hinge wedge sticking out the side like that also ruins looks, maybe you could go for a single wedge?
the motor protection should cover up the side too, and the end of the drum has no support

What should I use for a wedge that won't look ugly or be as heavy as a metal hinge?

Raise the hinge and use an extender that isn't plastic. Or, use magic extender work and use an angled shell panel, or some flipper segments.
