J24's DSL Showcase
« on: July 21, 2010, 09:21:22 AM »
Hi, im J24, and im new here, but not so new to ra2 or dsl
however, my robots still suck
here are a few of my designs
some help might be nice

This one is called proton
with a flipper that flips the robot onto the rotating spikes

some innards

im no good at minimizing empty space or building to the weight limit by the way
Thats it for now, if i build another half decent (by my standards) one ill post it here
P.S. I love hex plates

Not the worst first bot I've seen but definitely needs improvement. Here are some tips:

Get rid of the front wheels. (the shiny hubs)
Don't use baseplate anchors, use multi extenders
Use grippier wheels, like Vlads or Hypnoes.
NEVER USE BALLASTS. (unless you want to get flamed)
This needs 7-8 ant batteries, right now it's underpowered
Pointy tips have normals, use razor tips or iron spikes
build to the weight limit
minimize chassis space

But I like the wheel guards.

Thanks for the advice
i followed it and it works brilliantly now
heres a screenshot

the only reason i didnt use razor tips before was because they hit the floor, so i decided to replace the motor with one mounted higher up
im not going to remove the baseplate anchors but im not going to put anymore in ever now so thanks

Those wheels aren't the best, maybe use hypno's (Only if they are the right size of course)
Better than GK since 2009.
I think SM is a pretty cool guy, eh builds unicycle-bots and doesn't afraid of anything

OK, one basic rule is 1 ant per spin motor, 2 per BSG, 4 per Small JX, 5 per Large JX.
Adding more is a waste of weight but may better power you motors.
You need 7-8 as Badnik said, depending n what JX you used.

Thanks for that
Also, is there any better way of weighing it down at the front apart from ballasts, as when it goes too fast it tips over (thats why i have the extra batteries)

If the Hypnos are too small, you might want to trim off the side protection a little bit. ;)

Actually looking not too bad so far, I'm just a bit worried about the extender work, it looks kinda easy to take off from the right angle. Move the E-Tek motor further forwards if it's tipping back.

The hypno wheels are too small even for the chassis so trimming the armor wont help
but thanks for the other tips
heres how it looks now

Nice looking bots J24, liking the use of the hex's!

I am new here too and found quickly that these guys really know what they're talking about.

Also, I like the chassis design, seems effective!

I do those awful YouTube videos.

He's got the Vlad flipper on the JX, he just has to find the right angle for it.

That looks quite impressive at the moment, might want to do something about invertibility, I have a suspicion that when it throws a bot into the spikes, its momentum might tip itself over backwards, a bit like Complete Control vs Psychotron.

also, if people want and someone can tell me how, ill put proton (now renamed protonaut) up for download so you can edit him yourself, if what you're saying is hard to explain through text, or if you want to mess around with him

LOL
I lol'd also. I just didn't want to say anything. XD

Chassis could stand to be a lot smaller than this, especially if NPC Fasts are used rather than the much heavier E-Teks. Overpowered as well, maybe 6 ants or so, so you can keep up the pushing power for the full match instead of losing strength as the match goes on.

Again, I like the use of Hex plates, but Pointy tips are bad. Replace them with something without Normals, i.e. Razor Tip, Iron Spike, Beater Bar.

Here's how to put bots up for download:
1: export bot in game
2: go to your game directory and go to the "Robot Designs" folder
3: Make sure your bot is there
4:Go onto this site and go to "BotExchange"
5:Look on the right side for a thing that says "upload your DSL bot here"
6:Click DSL HW
7: Use the uploader to upload your bot
8: hit "OK"

If you did this right, a screen will pop up saying "Thanks for uploading your bot" will appear and the bot will be on the bot exchange.
