Dark-Al's DSL showcase (Definitely Something Lengthy)
« on: January 23, 2017, 01:27:56 PM »
Well, After being gone for a week. I felt a bit bad for my previous actions. Because when I may of been bogged down with the criticism, I felt that you guys were just trying all your best at helping and giving feedback to newcomers, but I was overwhelm with all the feedback, I felt like I had to do it all in one go. However, I decided to comeback for another chance and feel like I don't have to take all your advice in one go like a beginner, but to take it more easy and take my time.

So the point of this showcase? just to have fun. So to start with, I made a Boxing Robot after seeing Rob Collins' personal tournament. So here's the Convict:

I think it really does need a better name.
Edit: You can download the bot here:https://gametechmods.com/Robot_Exchange/DSL_HW/Dark-Al_The%20Convict.bot

Don't worry. It's not Little Mac or anything.

The Convict looks a bit like a flipper. Most of these boxer bots should probably have wider bases.

Not necessarily, it allows for variety

It'd be better if the hammers were flipped so they'd be in the centre, unless that cuts through the motor. In which case, shift it along a little or turn it slightly.

that chassis is way too big, make it a battery box or something like 5x1, get better skirt placement too, usually a 120 straight flat works

Made an update on Copy-Cat. Oh and, this was just something I threw in about 10 to 15 mins, so it's not perfect or anything.

If you're wondering about the name, it mainly a copy on most of the spinning hammer designs that were in some of the old BBEANS tournaments I've been looking through. Some of the bots include Mako and mainly Blood Orange.

Chassis, again, is too big. You need to shrink that a bunch and upgrade the hammers as they will come off, trust me :P if I can get 30kg hammers on a LW, I'm sure you can at least try 45kgs on that ;)

I know I can trust you Craaig. I remember looking over some of the old tournaments like BBEANS especially BBEANS 6 , you were the one who built Blood Orange which I can understand that you have experience of building these types of Robots.

I'll get to work on this, but don't expect it to be soon.

A bit of a bulk post here. So I took the advice of Craaig and made a few changes onto Copy Cat, which do include: a much smaller chassis, stronger weaponry and a new paint job simular to the last 2 models. There were a few times I was very much in the mood to just give up on making the robot, but thankfully, I pulled through and finally got my bot done.
 :claping.

Please do have a say about what you think.
And Also I know the extenders on the back are a little too long, which is just to counter balance the Robot.

Looks alright. I would be nice to have the front skirts be further apart and further forward tho. I took this example from Craaig's showcase, as he's the expert on DSL-S VS. This bot was made in DSL 2.1 but i think you can learn a lot from it:

VS's main problem is usually stability. Notice how it's front supports are wide and quite far forward, making the VS very stable. This is helped by having the chassis short and very wide. Having the drive motors as far apart as you can get them is nice too, it helps with turning.

Your weapon choice isn't bad. VS usually want a large disc/bar, with a couple of heavy, high HP weapons. Again, this helps with stability, as it's harder to knock off high HP weapons, and VSs really struggle when one of the weapons on their disc/bar is removed.

Time for a bit of almost IRl. I'm aware that this Bot had to go through two, different version but I'm still not happy with the self-righting and the Flipper itself.  Just if you want to know, this is a Middle-Weight with about 10kg to use up which I don't know what to use it on.
To me, this is more to my tastes in Robot building but please do have a say on what you think.

No, I'm not planning to Enter DemonofTomorrow's Tournament with this since it's heavily flawed, it's going to get trashed badly and I don't feel in the mood for entering Tournaments.

Well first of all, if it's a flipper, it's gonna need more battery power than that. Replace those with a couple of the black batteries, maybe more if you have the weight. The flipper itself looks alright but you probably want to replace those 45deg angles on the front with a pair of titanium or steel wedges. As for self-righting, there's not much advice I can give you in that regard.

You should seriously enter tournaments, mate. It is a great way to improve upon your designs and see how well they work.

Oh God, don't use those anchors, use the single extender anchor. Less hassle, and gives you more room to place it. I recommend centering the LEDs and maybe giving it eyes behind them, so the LED is glowing as pupils... then I may be intrigued by it for something...  :really_makes_you_think:
