Hell yes! Great looks, and themed around one of my favorite game premises ever.

Looking quite good. Flipper's a bit short, but never mind. Why was it that you deleted your old showcase, by the way? There were plenty of really cool designs in there.

I will only be putting robots of the highest quality (in my mind) in this thread, I felt the old thread was losing the standard it started with.

Robot   Season   Tournaments   W   RU   F   Record   Win%
MW001   001   19   7   3   1   29-11   72.5

Was good fun, some interesting AI v AI results, probably toughest bot was Lock Nut

Will be making a revised robot in near future.

As you know the season mode in RA2 is more or less unusable/broken, so I made my own.

Looking decent, I reckon. DSL Bars are definitely sticking too far out for my liking, and you could definitely make it invertible with either Vlads or Tornados, while still looking cool.

Thanks for the comments, the bot is designed hit at the sides of robots (I was going to call it 'side swipe' but it reminds me of an SR71). I've found when this sort of weapon goes head on it sometimes doesn't last, thought I'd try something different. It works upside down too :D

Hi guys, I have a few robot ideas, so I came up with: Robot Building Marathon: 24 hours bot building.

Wondering if this might be a regular/annual event or something, if not it can just be my thing, as I like a good gaming marathon from time to time.

So, here begins the first Classicus Robotics Robot Arena Marathon. 24 hrs of action films, Dr Pep, and robot building. I will post the results tomorrow.

The first robot of the marathon!

I've been tinkering with this concept for a couple of months, just having the solid hours to sit down and figure it out really helped.

As it uses a cheat motor for its weapon I shouldn't really say this but in testing it destroyed T-Minus (my default test robot) in 15 seconds which I'm pretty sure is a record.

Cool. Irons on flails aren't really the best though, is there a better option that still looks awesome? And I like the idea with the vlad forks :D
Title: Re: Shadow Moses MGT [Classicus' DSL Showcase]

since you're doing it now, do you have skype? most of us will be in a skype call while we build and it would be awesome if you joined

anyway about the bot- it looks pretty awesome and flail irons arent the best choice as badnik said. Love the use of the dsl bars as armour

I've been trying to do a good flail + irons bot for a while, just a thing I've been trying to do, plus I think the irons look the best, they're pretty effective so far. Destroyed Red Alert and stripped Second Sentinel into little bits.

I have builders block, think I'm going to take a couple hours and play Red Dead and try to come up with something, I tend to do most of my robot building in my head now, as I have learned the game more deeply. As I bet most of you do as well. I will come back after I have another bot.
Title: Re: Shadow Moses MGT [Classicus' DSL Showcase]
Post by: Classicus on June 10, 2012, 03:15:58 AM
I had a couple of hours sleep (I think I am getting too old for unplanned spur-of-the-moment marathons), I have been working on a bot I can't really talk about for reasons I can't really go into. At the moment i am working on a mortis replica with improvements. It always bothered me how rubbish mortis was, being my favourite bot I am going to see what I would have done if it was my bot.

Well two bots actually, I'm still on a marathon, I've made it a weekender, I'm working on a pretty tricky bot at the moment. Trying to make a robot version of this (http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/mods/images/45521-2-1330530934.jpg) that isnt a hovercraft and is also combat effective

and also (http://www.spacestationliberty.com/woj/other/hktank.jpg) that is also combat effective.

The Inaugural Robot Arena Wars: The First War Heavyweight Division is complete:

AI robots vs my robot. I like running AI tournaments, so this is best of both worlds.

Each war I will be evolving a current robot design until it is as good as I can make it, then I will move on to a new idea and continue the wars.

Title: Re: Shadow Moses MGT [Classicus' DSL Showcase]
Post by: Classicus on June 11, 2012, 11:04:11 AM
It just hammered it, eye stabber was pinning Beta to the bottom left arena weapon and Beta just hammered it to death. That match didn't last very long. Was less than a minute if I remember right.

I was thinking "...but Sage finished RAW 2 years ago..."

It looks quite good, but I would shrink up the DSL bars a bit, make them shorter. At the moment, they're obstructing the weaponry quite a bit, and eating up a fair chunk of weight.

Thanks marty,

@NFX: I havn't been able to get the DSL bars right yet, the problem is the limited options of the size of the disc to the length of the bars. I have two ideas for the next bot so I will try again soon.

Lost another close match with Wiide Load by a matter of 2 seconds. Probably a chance to win missed considering the robots that made it to the latter rounds.

New robot for Third War:

Most likely the final evolution of this idea for the time being.

Thermidor 2?? Dafuq?

Anyway you should widen the drive if you can to make the bot turn faster.

And you could win if you stopped fighting Wiiide Load :P

I am considering what format to use for the tournament, I am considering formats that guarantee more matches per bot.

You might want a Round Robin format for that, then. Every robot fights every other robot at least once.

I do like the reskin, though, especially the area around the perimeter.

you could do something like AON2 with winner/loser fights and so on

I'm still considering the tournament format.

News update: I am going back to standard DSL parts for the time being (no cheatbot2). I'm looking forward to making 'normal' bots for a while at least.

Yay Classicus is back.

The thing on top, is it just a srimech or is it also a flipper?

Srimech, of course, as well as bot stopper. It's not shaped like a flipper.

It's pretty awesome looking, but 4WD Copal on a MW is just absurdly slow for a side hammer.

I updated the skin:

and put it in a tournament:

Unfortunately the lack of power cost me in the end. I hoped I could get away with it thanks to the power of the weapons but not quite. There will be a rebuild next week, possibly heavyweight.

The Vulcan series is finished for now, the next logical step is Vulcan IV with the Therm flipper + flame throwers from V2. That will wait for another time.  Don't really know what to build next, I have been thinking about going over my old designs from the start and rebuilding them, or make a dice bot. I will mull over a few ideas and decide which one to do next.

Try replacing the 2 angled aluminum skirt with overkilled blade to balance out the visual......  You can probably get the weight by cutting chassis armor and those steel extenders.

Title: Re: SKYTECH [DSL]
Post by: Jamin on October 01, 2012, 07:07:56 PM
I'm still not sure how realistic RA2 is when it comes to these kinds of things, but I think if you made those spikes next to the arms longer and up higher, when you lift opponents it would tip the bot forward and stabilize it at an angle, similar to how Vlads Fulcrum wheels worked, which would allow you to gun it forward and have a better chance of flipping the other bots, unless my mental science is all screwed up.

Interesting comments but it mostly doesn't work anyway: Bio flippers don't work and aft drum weapons don't work properly. I will make a new version when I get round to it again. Was fun to make but difficult.

Title: Re: SKYTECH [DSL]

Here's a question: If I edit a chassis in the .bot file, can I do just about any shape I want or will it just crash if I go too mad?

I think if you do it right you can make crazy shapes, but one missing number/badly written line and you risk corrupting the whole bot file.

I don't think so, too much starting points. You'll probably rape your bot file.

Title: Re: SKYTECH [DSL]
Post by: 123savethewhales on October 02, 2012, 07:34:27 AM
Well, chassis raised like that won't have attachment points beside the 4 legs.  If you successfully make that chassis you would still need to hack the components in.

Nah I'm pretty sure the game doesn't recognize chassis bends like that, unfortunately.

The Devil from Stock? If you look underneath it, it's chassis is actually very complex. It has bends that you wouldn't be able to do traditionally, and tedious through bot editing, or I'd think so.

That's an interesting idea for a bot though, would love to see it in action.

Yeah, it's a VS clamp with flamethrower elements.

You need more forward defense and maybe the clamp weapon is too big for the flamethrower to reach the enemy bot... apart from that it's very aesthetically pleasing.

Think chassis wtih legs and a big disc underneath, like a giant spider or something? I tried making a bot like this before with Nightmare's struts but it didn't work.

I am a little late for making a suggestion but you could possibly get away with making the upper half of the chassis in that shape and then make legs out of various parts.  Similar to how I pulled off Megagross in the pokemon tourney. I think it could work, it would take a bunch of effort. (plus the legs wouldn't be the achilles heel of the bot due to immediate damage)  *pun intended*

Yeah that's a good idea. It's on the list.

This is a robot I made a few months ago which I've managed to get hold of again. It's overweight because I had to change components in the .bot file to get it working on my new DSL. I'd like advice on how I can make the weaponry more efficient/durable within the confines of the general design as it looks meaner than it actually is. All comments welcome.

looks awesome, if you want better weapons then you could go for beater bars and either razors or light ds teeth

Skinned NPC's?
seems to be

and why keep the armor at 3 mm steel, when you still have almost 300 kg left/100 kg excess ?
Title: Re: Classicus Robotics [DSL]
Post by: Classicus on October 08, 2012, 10:38:52 AM
Its NPC's with two Taz mechanisms on top. It's supposed to be a heavyweight. Its currently overweight because I rescued it from my old DSL which had altered components (for decoration) that my new one doesn't have.

You need to put 350kg of weapons into a Heavyweight FS if you want it to be remotely durable.  80kg of weapons are barely enough for a Lightweight.

You can't dump hundreds of kg into decos and expect it to still perform well in combat.

go with razors/beaters or light DS teeth/beaters

also, more armor where it does count, and cut down on stuff which only serves to make it prettier.

Update:

(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/43814R001 Osiris Update 001.png)

Added more spikes for damage and better self righting.

Results:

(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/29918R001 Osiris Battleshot 001.png)

Disappointing against some bots in tests. Skirts ineffective half the time, TMR3's weak/brittle.

Update: Developing new wheel motor and flat motor cheat components to be balanced as user components.

I am officially announcing my retirement from RA2. I no longer have the time for the game and have nothing left to do get me interested - I have reached the limits of what this game can do and I am just repeating old tricks. Who would have thought this badly made piece of horse crap game design would have provided so many hours of fun. It is all down to GTM and DSL for kissing the toad and making it great. Thanks everyone, its been great fun! over and out.

Hope you've enjoyed your time here anyway, and it'd be great to see you still around every now and again! :D

Greetings, I have stumbled across how to make a stable, functioning walker (I half stole an idea from Domanating). At this stage it is fairly crude and very very slow but I now know how to make a walker that works. I will try to put it into a meaningful robot (one that can fight or is at least mobile/self righting) which I will work on over the weekend. I am however 99.9% certain genuine two legged walkers are impossible in RA2 but new hope for walkers in general! This may seem like a pointless post but I don't want to show anything until I succeed or fail, and I had to say something as this is good news :D. Either way I will show the ideas sometime in the next few days.

Good luck, m8. Building walkers is extremely frustrating. But once you make one work, the feeling is awesome

I have started to teach myself website design, I'm therefore going to have my own RA website (inspired by Beetlebros). http://classicusdesign.tk/ (http://classicusdesign.tk/)

I will be fiddling with it over the next few weeks and adding some interesting stuff. Think of it as my OCD/nerd/geek sink hole.

One small step...

I present a functioning walker - can move verrrrrry slooooowly in a straightish line, cannot turn yet. As you can see from the two pictures genuine directional movement achieved, I have a vid of this run which I will process later. I'm thinking more legs + power sources may = more speed.

Might have worked but I encountered pretty colossal havocking. Suspect horizontal servo motors may be too close together but not sure. Any thoughts?

Probably the linked actuators.
Title: Re: Classicus Design
Post by: 090901 on January 26, 2013, 12:40:10 PM
It's probably due to the fact you have so many pistons.
Even though the bot is pretty much useless, it is cool as heck.
Title: Re: Classicus Design
Post by: Classicus on January 26, 2013, 02:56:37 PM
I think I will get back to making some normal robots for a while and pick this up later. If anyone would like to take up the baton in the mean-time would be interesting to see what a fresh perspective can do. I'd be interested in seeing if anyone can come up with an efficient non-wheel/track based turning method.

I have started to update my site, if anyone can think of some good things to add I'm open to suggestions.
Title: Re: Classicus Design
Post by: Domanating on January 26, 2013, 05:28:35 PM
I'm very surprised that you actually made a walking bot with pistons! Besides the centipede, no other piston walker bot I made could escape insane havocking. Piston walkers were then excluded.
I don't know how and why havoc didn't occur to your weaponless walker, though.

In my opinion, weaponized walkers can only work against other walkers. A fast wheeled bot will very easily push, flip and throw a walker.
Title: Re: Classicus Design
Post by: Classicus on January 27, 2013, 03:58:13 AM
Since a walker can have twice the weight of a wheeled robot in its weight class if you can get the propulsion really efficient there is the potential for some pretty devastating weaponry. Could be a big advantage if I could just get the thing to walk.
