Celestial Panda's Showcase
« on: March 12, 2012, 11:35:31 AM »
Hey there, I'm Celestial Panda. I've been lurking around a year, playing RA2 for two. DSL's a great improvement on the original game, wonderful for building all kinds of things!

As someone who is still lamenting the loss of Robot Wars, I like to build things similar to what you'd see on the show, I just wish flippers were better in this game. Is there a method to building very powerful flipper-bots?

So I hope you like the robots I've built! I still need to learn patience, and the best way to line up motors for symmetrical-ness. I also overpower them, but that's because I like to put battles on for 5 minutes and want to be prepared.

Flipping Out
Armour: Titanium 1.
Power: Entirely too many batteries. Put in the Red battery for the flippers, but I don't think that's right.
Drive: TWM3R Drive. It's still a little slow for my tastes, but gets the job done I guess.

Saw Point
Armour: Aluminium 1. This is a terrible choice, I know. This bot needs a slight tuneup. =P
Power: Still entirely too many batteries. It's also really easy to stack the orange ones, so I do that quite a lot, so there might be even more hidden there.
Drive: NPC-T64s, wonderfully fast and keep me pretty close to the ground.
There's a Schrimech made with two bursts and two perspex extenders. It tends to Self-Right too well, putting me back on my back sometimes.

Very nice robots for a newcomer. I'll be looking forward to see more.

Also welcome to forums.

The major thing (rushed as I have to leave) - spin motors only need 1 ant battery each, however beta bursts need >20. There is a guide to this somewhere, hopefully someone nice can link you up.

looks pretty cool, liking the dual weapon system on the first bot. otherwise it isn't great :P
and you would need about 46 ant batteries to power the first bot or a few of the really tall black batteries. and npc drive is better for a heavyweight.

for the second bot, you can get rid of a burst motor and have 2 arms coming off one motor and get rid of all the ants except about  9. and it needs better armour choice as you said (the first bot could do with thicker armour aswell).
if you're using wedges then you'd want to go for metal hinge wedges. and there are way better weapon choices and even armour choices (the extra wide ramplate isn't that great iirc)

On the second bot, are those mag burst motors? if so then change them to bsg's.
and if you want a better flipper then you can go with judge burst motors (cheatbot2), you need atleast 30kg on them so they dont go crazy and havok everywhere iirc
DSL Showcase
is this bot don't lost all razors in a fight before do a damage thought

30 kg ramplates and mag snappers suck hard
aluminum is pretty awful as well
sideways pole spikes also seem pretty pointless, if you're going to do that, at least put on a weapon with no normals like irons/razors/etc.
How you make Alarm Clock Pizza is:
Step 1: You buy an alarm clock from the store, and then you have to break it and put it in the sauce.
Step 2: Fold the sauce in 5 slices and put it in the dough.
Step 3: Paint the eggs with a pitcher of a clock showing what time you want to wake up and eat pizza for breakfast.
Step 4: Put the eggs in the dough.
Step 5: Make it flat into a round shape and draw the time you want on it.
Step 6: Put some old steel to prevent other peple from stealing it.
Step 7: Make it flat and cut into 60 slices 1 for each minute in 1 our.
Step 8: Put in the oven set the timer to 30048813.2884 seconds and put the temperature on 'Volcano' setting.
Step 9: If you think it is take to long, then get yor alarm clock and set it to now so that it will ring and you can take it out.
Step 10: Take it out uv the uvin wen it is redy and go to bed. In the morning eat pizza and also eat yor hands bi mistake.

Made some tweaks. I think it's running a Titanium, but might be Plastic 3, I forget how to check. Less Ants (10), and looks a little more visually pleasing while being more armoured thanks to the DSL bars. (The spikes are for aesthetics more than anything). The Schrimechs are a lesser motor, so now it doesn't flail wildly when self-righting XD

It does have this issue where driving forwards, it just veers to the right. I've another bot that does the same thing, maybe I'm a lop-sided builder? As far as I can tell one of the Perm-80s sinks through the chassis more than the other.

Take the wheels off and put them back on again, sometimes works for me.

Looks nice. Only thing I can think now is a little bit of chassis shrinking to get some more weight for more substantial weapons :P

Flipping Out II
Power - 2 Large Blacks, 24 Ants.
Armour - Titanium 3.
Uses regular NPCs, and rubber wheels. I tried Hypnos and Micros, but I want more speed, and cant really get it. I guess I should lower the armour..

I think it needs more power? It's too slow for my liking, but if a robot can go Out Of The Arena, it will. Sometimes the force causes my robot to do a forwards flip XD
So far it's beaten Grog, Wide Load, UnDeadbeat all in the RW Arena.

have you tried making something that's  invertible? its the one thing that will automatically troll a flipper (hovercraft engines are not a robot type.)

I do have an invertible robot ready to show, but it's at a PC I'm unable to reach for a week or so.
Flipping Out tends not to care if you're invertible (and it's in an arena where you can go OOTA) ;P

Getting better. There's a few things you can do to make it better, though. For starters, the flipper skirts you're using are VERY flimsy. Ideally you want Titanium, or preferably Steel. For a faster bot, you probably need NPC Fasts, and Hypno Wheels to give reduced ground clearance. It also looks as though you could reduce the height of the chassis to get the weight you need, you can have the top part of the Beta Burst, with the gear and flipper part sticking out of the top, thanks to the collision mesh. Perhaps you could try swapping a few ants, which seem to be eating up quite a lot of weight for a couple more of the tall batteries. A Beta Burst requires 17 ants for full power, IIRC. Or 21. I forget. The tall batteries are the equivelant of six ants for less weight.

Yes it does. The rebuild that's taking part in RIWS3 is much faster with 4 wheels, 4 black bats and ants to make sure it's fully powered.
Interesting about the flipper skirts, I thought I remembered a post that said; The lighter the thing on a burst, the more "powerful" the flipper. That's why I went for Polycarb skirts, I've noticed they fall off a lot though, so I will try Titanium or Steel, definitely.

That's true, but the Beta Burst is so damn powerful, that you could have a 120cm Angled Steel Skirt, and easily throw the opponent into the air with a pair of them. Provided you've got enough batteries. And the Poly Skirts you're using have a disastrous HP to Weight ratio, for some reason all the skirts of the same material have the same HP. So the 40cm skirts are twice as strong per unit weight as the 80cm skirts.

Q: What happens when you take Typhoon's chassis, and attempt to build a robot without changing it's shape or height?
A: Typhoon DSL! HW, lots of power, Plastic 1 (I think). It likes to veer right when moving forwards.

Rotated Sheck parts are so that it reaches the floor (sort of), but it also looks kinda cool so a double whammy!

And then I made a MW version of it too:

Same chassis, 392kg, less damaging but more IRL.
