Fix online gameplay?
« on: June 24, 2011, 04:33:53 AM »
I had an idea, if we could find out the protocol of the master server, edit the (probably) hardcoded address of the gameserver that RA2 to our server, code the server then maybe we can play online without hamachi. It probably won't fix the lag, but it's worth a shot.

Anyone?

No idea what that means but it seems pretty hardwired into RA2 to use Gamespy. (BTW what does the file in the Gamespy folder do?). Anyway, I'm happy with using Tunngle.

That's a good idea, but where would we find said protocol?

What it means it to will correct the second part you said :P

In simple terms, we point the RA2 towards an active server so we can use the in game lobby in multiplayer without having to join Hamatchi severs..

The big advantage to that would be no more dealing with 15 people network limits.. you would be able to fight anyone who clicks Multiplayer (and has the modified game)

I have thought of doing something like this myself.. would be interested to see how far we could get..

Nope, nothing. (Well I would never find anything)

Line 14557 of the .exe opened in Notepad++ has some stuff on gamespy.

I have to do more investigation, but I've done something similar before, with CoD4. The master server was annoyingly often down so I wrote my own. But that server was well-documented and changing to a different masterserver was simply opening the console in-game and changing a CVar.

I guess we'll have to do some emulating and packet sniffing.

NO it doesn't, and I NEVER have installed gamespy since the first time and saw how bad it is. You can launch and play a game directly from the in game console and Tunngle or hamachi is not even needed, tho most people use a router that firewalls them from hosting games, and there is no way around that besides using one modem, and a static IP address.
