Why do you NOT participate in BOTM?
« on: February 07, 2012, 03:00:05 PM »
BOTM participation has gone downhill.  I am curious as to why.  There are plenty of active builders in the community.  Some of the big guns like Joe, Sage, and Click have been absent from BOTM for a while. I am really surprised that others have not jumped at the opportunity to win.  It seems like it coincides with the increase in IRL building that the community is enjoying.  I would like to know your feelings on the subject. Please take a moment to answer the poll with any of the choices that are relevant to you.  Thanks.

my splash skills suck ASS
edit: wait why is this in the tourney section
How you make Alarm Clock Pizza is:
Step 1: You buy an alarm clock from the store, and then you have to break it and put it in the sauce.
Step 2: Fold the sauce in 5 slices and put it in the dough.
Step 3: Paint the eggs with a pitcher of a clock showing what time you want to wake up and eat pizza for breakfast.
Step 4: Put the eggs in the dough.
Step 5: Make it flat into a round shape and draw the time you want on it.
Step 6: Put some old steel to prevent other peple from stealing it.
Step 7: Make it flat and cut into 60 slices 1 for each minute in 1 our.
Step 8: Put in the oven set the timer to 30048813.2884 seconds and put the temperature on 'Volcano' setting.
Step 9: If you think it is take to long, then get yor alarm clock and set it to now so that it will ring and you can take it out.
Step 10: Take it out uv the uvin wen it is redy and go to bed. In the morning eat pizza and also eat yor hands bi mistake.

It only went down for two months; just look at the December and November BOTM competitions. January and February had less entries because of the rules ACAMS decided. (Stock UHW and DSL eight wheeled at least one snowplow at least two weapon systems HW aren't particularly appealing)

This in no way invalidates the purpose of the poll and this discussion, though. Just wanted to clear up that BOTM isn't going downhill because of something having to do with the builders themselves. (although I myself only build Stock) So yeah, I said the rules do not interest me.

Tournaments and Contests section. (BOTM goes in this forum)

Answers n°4 and n°5... and the thing is that I realize since the big guns (mostly Joe and Click) have left, I could beat all the lesser builders easily, but I am too damn lazy. Especially in the last three months.

Also there's a problem of BOTM being "splash of the month" (though it seems to be less true with the departure of the big guns), and there is much less excitement to be found in BOTM contests and victories rather than in the robotic battlefield.

Also, so much potential for abuse. A group of unknowing, unskilled n00bs or newfags could force the victory of an uninteresting (in the three possible categories : cool looks, efficiency/combat worth and originality) bot.

But that's democracy for you.  :thumbdown

@AS : Splash skills are a judgment for sure, but I judge more on originality, general interest level and building skill. Hell I voted for your bot.

Can't come up with a good bot design or a good splash.

My BOTM October 2010 bot shows why.

People vote splashes instead.

People vote splashes done by a few members they know.

Members make their splashes look the same by adding signature details (I.E Click and Joe use descriptive splashes featuring unique bots, the seperation is that Joeblo never shows battleshots and only results while click has large chassi bots.)

BOTM was a popularity contest like everything else for a while.

Put this onto your signature if you were part of this crappy fad in '03.

Most of my BOTM entries have been random builds that happened to fit BOTM criteria, with exceptions being Spinoff and Omnivore. So if I end up building something that fits criteria I often enter it. Most of the time I try to make my splash as "SKBT'y" * as possible because everyone knows my building style and trying to disguise it would be silly.

Yeah it would be cool to see some new people build bots for BOTM and/or to see some vets get back into the game. I've never got why Scrap doesn't enter more.

*my splashes also can be thrown together in less than 10 min so that's the other reason why my splashes look the way they do.  :gawe:

Weird rules... The last BotM I participated in was in August 2009. The rules were simple. Build a DSL popup. No realistic rule.

Make it simple again...
