Title: When Did You First Hear About RA2?
Post by: Natef on August 17, 2009, 03:07:29 PM: I first heard about RA2 when I was on youtube, and I saw some videos on RA2 and I thought it was interesting. I later played the demo, and then I bought the game, and the I joined the forums.

What's your story?

I've always been a Robot Wars fan, and after I played the Robot Wars PC games, I felt somewhat unsatisfied by the lack of freedom to design, and the clunky, uninteresting battles. Then I sawThis video. (http://www.chaosengineering.com/assets/multimedia/Tornado_Mer_vs_Particle_Acc.rm) The description was: "Also impressive! Reminds me of playing Robot Arena 2." And I thought to myself "If there's a computer game that allows you to do that, I've GOT to have it."

Post by: somestrangeguy on August 17, 2009, 05:51:36 PM: Well, I think I was wathing Robot wars videos and saw some video of RA2 and then I went to the Pirate Bay. not much luck finding it from seaching, but one torrent was barely alive about 100 pages back. Thats where I got it.

Post by: HurricaneAndrew on August 17, 2009, 07:06:03 PM: I was quite a fan of BattleBots, Robotica, and Robot Wars when one day I came across Robot Arena at a school book fair, which was usually just books and other educational crap, but I decided to try it. I thought the game was ok, but not the best I'd ever played, so it sat on my computer desk mostly. A year or so passed and one day, I ran acrossed Robot Arena 2 (seems like it was at a book fair as well). I bought it and loved it, but like any other game, it got boring and i quit playing. Then just recently I got the urge to play it again. I played it for a while, but then inadvertantly found the online RA2 community and DSL 2.1. I have never been more in love with a game.

So that's my story.

I got it, and it was so awesome, but, i lost the CD and i forgot about it, then in 05, i found it and played again. That's when i heard of GTM, but, a glitch happened and i could never get out of the game. Then i forgot about it again. Then, in march, my brother downloaded RA2, then i got my own, and that's what puts me here today.

ACAMS, you should not post here, cause you're 'off topic'. You should start your own showcase (once you get better). And you shouldn't brag about your "Awesomebot1" beating Emergency,... else you'll get flamed real quickly around here (just ask Venko). And also you're lucky Naryar isn't around to see all of that wasted space in your bot.

BTW: Beware of the owner of this site... Y'all bess not cross 'em.

My son intro-ed the game to me....

I hadn't watched Robot Wars since I was a little kid but I had thought about a game a little. I think it was a last second decision as I was headed out the door to get RA2 instead of the other game (I paid $14.99 for the game too, at this point I can say money well spent.) I barely found the official forums back in '06 and worked my way up from there. In that time period I've grown up with RA2 and this community.

One of these days I'm going to recreate my first ever bot to showcase here. Maybe try to replicate some of my old bots from before I joined the forums...

As for me, last year, in late October, I was watching some Robot Wars vids on Youtube when I came across some vids of RA2. The game looked interesting, so I downloaded the trial version from the RA2 main website. A few days later, in November, I converted my trial version, and I developed from there.

I had enjoyed watching Battlebots on TV and had done computer games for years before that (games like CRobots and wrote my first Tank Combat Game back in 1978) so I thought it was cool my sons were liking robotic games.

I helped him, his older brother and their friends install it our home computer gaming network. As they were trying to figure out how to bot build I hunted the Internet for them for samples and examples of other good bots. Found Robot Arena 2 Forums and Aceuplink in my searching and I lurked for a about a month. In late November 2003 I registered at Aceuplink and was banned before I had even posted 1 post. They thought because of some similarity of my IP to a problem member BeOt that I was an alt of BeOt. Which was odd since I was connecting from Oregon and that I heard later, BeOt was from UK. I almost decided to not work to correct things if they wanted to be so quick to accuse. Finally proved my identity. I dived into making my own pack in December 2003 over my vacation time only to have RFS complain that my first showcase bot was "Overloaded". (Borg Queen) A few others followed suit saying my bots were overloaded and unrealistic. Luckily I am more thick skinned than that.

The forums were rife with veterans blurring their bots in showcases to hide technqiues from new members. I have a thing about teaching, training, growing. January 17, 2004 after being active with the forums a bit over a month I released Starcore V1 AI Pack. The rest as they say is history...

then towards the end of last year I went into a video game store and saw a preowned copy of Robot Wars Arenas Of Destruction.. I never knew they made a PS2 game so I brought it straight away and played it to death and then my interest in robots started again.

the game was good but just too fake for my liking I looked up videos on youtube and saw extreme destruction which appeared better (but its about the same) got myself a copy of that and played it to death and wished I could built my own bots with less restrictions.

while looking up extreme destruction videos on youtube to find robots people had made I came across a video of Clicks I believe? showing a VS that could turn into a HS mid battle I instantly looked up more videos before finally getting my mitts on a copy.

I looked up more videos and came across replicas and knew I just had to get them looked on one video and someone asked "how did you get all the replicas?" and someone replied GameTechMods.com and the rest is history

phew maybe a little too long with the story but at least you can see why I follow the beetle brothers work so much :-D
