Title: What are your motivations to play RA2?
Post by: Thyrus on August 24, 2011, 07:11:06 PM
Robot Arena 2 has no goal. No achievements or nothing you could do after you won a ingame tournament. It`s a rather old game but there are still many people playing it.
so what are your motivations to do so?

I still play it cause I want to bring new shapes in this game. DSL makes it possible to bring up completely new designs that couldn`t be done in stock. I love to experiment with the dome parts and the flippermaker. and with this waste of weight I try to make an good looking MW robot.

I'm still exploring all the possible bot types in stock, then I'll go to DSL and explore some of the types there.

Discovery, R+D, and testing those D's in tournaments.

I do it for the fun of entering tournaments, and besides, if I didn't build bots on an RA2 forum... :P

To satisfy my addiction to Robot Combat, and to be competitive at the one thing I'm good at (I'm not very athletic)

I'll be your personal trainer. I love sports. Anyways, I like contributing new bots even if they aren't terribly good.

Exploring the designs and combination that "work".

That's my reason for playing most games.

I've always most enjoyed the games that let you do your own thing, especially when you get to design.  If I can build/create in a game, it'll hold my interest long past when I should've just thrown the game away.

Take any wrestling game with Create-a-wrestler.  I'll actually play the game for about 6 hours total.  But I'll still create wrestlers for about a year or so, just to see what I can come up with.

RA2 is kinda like that for me.  I play to see what I can come up with.  If it had 20 or 30 premade bots you could play with, I probably would've stopped playing after a day or so.

I've loved Robot Combat Since I was 4. And I love it when Robots get destroyed. RA2 Motivates because It's still the best game about of Robot Combat, and Only thing that I recommend in RA2 is absolutely Vanilla And Absolutely Realistic. That's why I created Robot Wars Virtual - Tournament.

Oh, And I forgot. I'm the only Finnish person that plays RA2 Active anymore.

Wanting to get more flipper power out of the smallest possible chassis.

Sometimes it just hits you.

Like the design for Havok 18 (3 betas), best maths lesson ever.

I play to glitch. I want to make the system go crazy by adding tons of pistons on a bot or giving it the ability to fly.

I also play it for the spinning. Everything's better with spinning

1. Just a unique game.

2. The maps of arenas and trying to perfect maneuvering and avoiding the hazards.

3. Trying to bulid amazing designs so it could win tourneys.

4. Thinking about probably 100's of ten thousands different designs from like SFTW to Death Port 3 to buliding Replicas in Stock.

5. Best Time Killer.

Spatial awareness challenge. It's why I build so much HS. Trying to construct a bot in your head while all the components are randomly floating around in space... i love it.

...I am slightly concerned that NEITHER of the global mods have any motivation to be here. We are still eternally grateful for the privilege of basking in your awesomeness. =P

My motivation is just to see what I can come up with. I've always liked games that have an element of customization in them, and Robot Arena 2 has by far and away the greatest amount of customisation possible in any video game I have played. Whether it be for combat efficiency, or purely for looks, I just enjoy starting with the blank chassis grid and creating anything I want out of it. Infinite possibility.

To prat about with un-used designs that work in the games physics engine.
And to invent things, I guess; TRFBDs, Full Body 180 Degree Hammers, Face-Servo Lifters, other random and mostly pointless things.

You would be surprised just how hard it is to keep adding razors onto an FSS without going through major designs revisions.

@Sparkey and LRA2 : gtfo n00bs

Anyways, for me two different things are interesting in this game. One is the "CRUSH YOUR OPPONENTS AND LAUGH AT THEIR DEFEAT" part, the second is the "build something new, cool, creative and awesome" part.

It's pretty much what everyone has stated yet, a competitive part and a building part, and both parts are even in the game's title : "Design and Destroy"

To have fun and not have to worry if its effective at all or not. Some times I find it fun to see just how bad a bot can fail cause it just fun watching them go flying or something. Having to make every thing 'effective' and 'right' kills the fun.

May not post them but as the saying goes "Practice makes perfect." so even if you make a decent bot (or thought ya did) and posted it bang even if your just wanting to show it off thinking you just want to show it ya still got at least half the forum jumping on your tail to make the bot better. And after it been made better its looks almost nothing like you intended it just another clone of something else. But thats an entire topic on it own.

And as Perytor said, if you don't listen to them then your flamed labeled a sparky and become a target for everyone to pick on.

These days I generally play to see where certain designs perform best, as well as come up with new ones if possible.

I've kind of still got a slightly experimentative style, but on the whole I try to build bots to beat a specific bot that I've lost to in the past, such as Bane Revolution, or 3V=IR. When I actually have some spare time to build something, that is.

I have lost most motivation to build, but I guess it's only a natural, final stage of RA2 building.

I had more motivation when I was playing stock cos I could make anything and still win, but when I came here and saw everyone else's bots, I kind of retired from stock and became a DSL n00b instead.
