Title: Using RW:ED Textures in RA2?

Hi guys I'm new here and I've just posted in the new members section.
I don't know whether this has been mentioned before or whether its a good suggestion but here goes. After using QuickBMS to open the PCMusic and Lumpy files in Robot Wars: Extreme Destruction, I found the textures. I'm sure many of you have done this before. They seem quite good quality and are mostly .TGA files. My suggestion is could we use these textures to make better RA2 modded bots and arenas. Here's two samples; A section of the Robot Wars Arena and Hypno Disk's disk.

Yay possibly a good suggestion! It means we could use all of the textures from all of the arenas and bots from the game. The TV Studio arena floor for example seems to be in six sections.

nothing to it really in RA2.. arena's and components each have "maps" folders


you will find the graphics there.. you cannot do a file swap but with some quick photoshop work (or those silly freebie programs you lot all love so much :P) put the flat artwork into the existing bitmap or targa image files and match it all up nicely

It'd be much more difficult for the RW arena I guess, because all the dimensions will be slightly different. In fact, I believe everything is flipped horizontally in the RA2 RW arena.

Yes it is back to front I noticed that too. I've just put all of the images together to make the full Robot Wars Arena floor plan! Not sure if it will work or not...

The Hypnodisc texture would be quite easy to implement though.
*goes to look through files*
In the file Robot Arena 2>Components>Hypnodisc>maps there is a bmp file for the hypnodisc disc. It would be fairly easy to size down the image you pulled out of ED and put it over the still-very-nice version in there.

Yeah, RA2's files aren't too hard to mod although they can be a bit weird sometimes. Make sure you backup everything before you do something too drastic.

If anyone wants that, just extract this (https://gametechmods.com/uploads/files/Hypno.zip) to your RA2 directory, and overwrite as necessary. (Didn't want to upload a bmp to the server :P)

I'm not sure the rest will be so easy, as the components aren't the same as they would be on the RW Hypnodisc - the wheels aren't even perfectly round in, and the teeth sure aren't that shape, but they could be used with a bit of work.

Well I've reskinned the wheels and they look nice. But the disk and body have turned out like this. What have I done wrong?

What exactly did you do? Name each step. You could have messed up a file name or something or it could just be RA2...being RA2.

I also very much like the look of that Panic Attack Lid- I bet that I could use that to create a whole new Panic Attack replica for DSL   :approve:

It's fine to have that many images, yeah. If there are quite a lot, or if they're quite large, then you may want to put them in spoiler tags.

Its just bitmap editing (and maybe a little targa editing depending on what the component is)


so find the component's own folder, open the maps folder, open the bitmap in Photoshop or your preferred cheap knockoff (:P) and manipulate the images from this thread to fit the existing texture sizes


then save..


to clarify though, this is updating textures, to correctly make new skinned components you need to edit the model files...
