Title: Tribute to the Robot Arena Series
Post by: Gigafrost on October 03, 2006, 10:06:00 PM
It would be nice to "recreate" the arenas from Robot Arena and Robot Arena 2 into DSL. Ofcoarse you should make it look as if they have been there for some time since they are acient compared to the dsl arenas. (i.e. robot arena 2: metal skull arena looks a bit rusted and dusty)

thx for replies if any

I really liked the second arena in Robot Arena 1.  I think it was called the megaton arena.  It was like to plane arenas that were sepperated by a tunnel.  Im trying to remeber what the hazzerds.  I think a robotica fight to the finsh arena would be fun.  After 30 seconds the sides drop down.

Interesting idea, and actually, yes, I agree with that.  Some of the older arenas should look "weathered" and used, like they've been around for a long time.  (Well, they have been, haven't they ...?)  Cracks in the concrete, graffiti here and there, maybe some gaps or holes in the electric arena floor grates  ... Dusty may be a little hard to do, but stuff like sloppy welding jobs and mismatched paint should be fairly easy to do.  Having never seen the original RA1 arenas, I couldn't really say anything about those ...

How 'bout it, guys?  Anyone want to step up to the plate and try weathering the older arenas some?

You should be able to go into the Arenas folder, and into each separate arena from there.  The maps folder is the one where all the bmp files are, and I guess they coudl eb modified from there ..... Just save an original of each map in case something gets goofed up, though ...

true... it will also be nice to have a download package that has all the Robot Arena, Robot Arena 2, and Dsl mod arenas so that you wont have to go through the trouble of downloading the whole thing for hours. if you just want to play on the arenas that is.

I have the RA2 and DSL arenas (both versions), plus a few extra ones, like Dummy's Think Tank, the Bahamas, and StarCore's arena, but I don't know if anyone has the RA1 arenas.  Would be nice to dig up all the oldies and redo them a little....

I have every arena I know of in mine.  I had the stunt arena about a year ago.

I think it would be kinda fun doing this .... fixing the "older" arenas so they actually looked old.  Like how long has that skull been mounted up there ...?  I'm going to try and fix the skull so it looks rusty, maybe work on the arena floor a little ..... Anyone else think this is a good idea?  Suggestions?  Ideas?  Offers of help?

sounds like a good idea...and the spikes that come out of the floor can be broken and rusty..and saw blades can be rusty aswell

this may be a bit "Farfetched" but if they do come out the floor, it would be a little comedic to see them break off when your robots weapons hit them. as if no one took the time to take care of buying new blades and spikes. the parts that are still attached to the floor motors however should still do some damage, not the pieces broken off. just a thought.

You can't get RA1 components or arenas to work in RA2.  They're made with an earlier version of 3DSM and saved in a different gmf format that's incompatible.

true, as for the arenas. i have a weak lack of knowledge of using 3d studio max, so i will instead create a UI/AI pack. coming soon... anyone that knows how to create arenas are free to give to me to put in the pack. they will also be creditted.

I still have Robot Arena 1 on my computer. (I even still play it once in awhile)
I don't know much about making arenas though.   :(

Maybe with Max you could convert RA1 arenas/components into RA2 stuff, but not with Dummy's compiler.  I've tried decompiling RA1 stuff and it works about as well as importing an RA1 bot into RA2.
