Title: Tips for a Newcomer
Post by: Absolarix on February 06, 2014, 06:00:33 PM
Anyone have any suggestions for things I should be doing around here to involve myself in the community? I don't have the foggiest of a clue what to do here, though I did want to report a couple problems with some of the downloads on this site(such as one of the 'Bots in the Starcore V3 AI Pack, dunno' which yet).

Someone has already suggested that I share my 'Bot designs with everyone, though I don't think any of them would be very impressive judging by the content I see in the Starcore V3 AI Pack.

The reason I joined this site is because I want to learn how to make my own AI Robots and I also have a couple ideas for Arenas I'd like to make, but first I must learn how to make an arena.

Edit 1 (February 06, 2014, 05:02:01 PM): Forgot to put in that for some reason I can't post in the (Site Information --> New Member Welcome) forum thread(after one single post).  :ermm:

If you don't share your designs, you're not going to improve.

Once you get started you can learn AIing and start a tournament.

Pretty much as long as you don't act stubborn (like me) and take tips to improve your bots, you'll generally become well liked.

People will probably be harsh on your designs, but if you let the negativity just roll off of you, and take their suggestions into mind, your feeling of belongingness will follow.

That's a very easy thing for me to do. Ignoring other's negativity.

Just read through old threads. You can learn a lot from those.

Also, don't do what I did and be too boastful about your first bot, which might suck, but that is common out of new members. Trust me, it is not a good thing.

Yeah, my 'Bot is overpowered by Stock AI terms, but by rules of this website's 'Bots it's a whole other story. xD

What I did (and enjoyed) was look through the 'Vote Bot of the Month' threads. They show what makes some bots better than others.

A newbie that asks how to make it's introducting to GTM ? That must be the first time I've ever seen that...

Though good thinking. You seem to be a worthy addition !

Generally, as a newbie: Listen to advice. Be polite. Don't argue with more knowlegeable builders than you (unless you are certain you are right). Build interesting bots.

You should avoid most problems if you do that.

But really... if you are careful enough to test GTM's waters before taking a dive, you should fit in just fine.

All right then, thank you.
