Title: the lazy susan CHALLENGE
Post by: Reier on June 19, 2018, 02:12:31 PM
ok so for whatever reason putting your drive like this actually works with no problems in ra2.

basically its like the game calculates how the robot will move based on the initial placement of the drive motors and wheels, and is extremely determined to keep it that way even if logic and physics dictate otherwise. basically, you can move in directions independent of the wheels as long as the wheels start in the "normal" position.

I've used a modified version of this drive on a few other bots (https://gametechmods.com/forums/ironforge-tc-showcases/the-mighty-reier's-'we-are-the-chumpions'-ironforge-extravaganza/msg747656/#msg747656) to see what I could get away with while still being effective.

HOWEVER
I have a challenge though. I want to see someone make an effective robot with the ridiculous drive system I posted on the first pic. you can use an axle or a servo, and the mod is irrelevant. I feel like no one has really experimented with silly drive like this and I want to see how far we can take it.

Dragonsteincole got to the final eight of Masters Of Disaster with Rare Birb.

Wow, it's an unrealistic robot beating an IRL robot.

idk, why? its been around since like 06 or earlier

just no one seems to do anything with it. once like every 2 years a bot using it shows up but thats about it
its time for the ARMIES

If I can find my old files I have a dumb bot I made that was essentially a box in the air with wheels on red birds that were attached to servos. I made it with the idea of a dynamic drive system in mind where I could go sideways with it (and be stylish not practical) but I discovered this oddity. It makes sense after you think about it but yea it's weird. Turns out just angling the motors 45 degrees all the way around (maybe less depending on what you're going for of course) makes a bot that can travel any which way you want it to.

One thing I don't think I tested was if you can lift the wheels up using this method, I don't think so but it could be possible depending on how you do it. But I think the game just checks to see if a wheel is touching the floor. Would be interesting to mess with though for like 5 minutes.

I tried it before. you still need to have the wheels touch the ground. just another oddity of the world

Who needs conservation of energy or Newton's laws when you get to conserve initial wheel force direction (which work more like rocket boosters than wheels) amirite.

initial build:
