So, recently Trovaner has posted that the snow plow has default HP for the "Component" base type, which is true. However, the default HP is only 100, which doesn't seem to fit with experience. Plows seem to be a lot more durable than extenders. There's some speculation that the curved shape reduces damage, but what's really going on?
I decided to test the plow HP in game to settle the matter once and for all. I simply rammed a plow into the wall in the test arena and added up how much damage it took before it broke. Then I used a bit of Python for a more exact measurement.
In both tests, the total HP came out to 1000, not 100, with a fracture of 60. This is also true of bracket wedges, forklift arms, small wedges, and EMERGENCY wedges.
So what's going on? I think the default HP is different depending on whether the component is in the "extenders" category or the "extras" category. Similar to how anything in the "power" category is invincible regardless of what is set in the .txt file, components in the extenders category have 100 HP by default, while components in the extras category have 1000 by default.
So, good news! Plows are still safe to use! You don't have to avoid them like the plague now, thinking they only have 100 HP!

Sweet. How much HP do battleaxes have?
-
Battleaxes are a weapon so they have 1000 HP. That hasn't changed.
-
Well in any case this will help me plan for Ironbot :P
-
Oh good so we wernt going insane over the fact they seemed stronger .. :P
-
Excellent.
-
That sounds pretty good. Nice to know we weren't going mad over it. =] Do Ramplates still have 8000HP, or is that only in DSL?
-
They only have 1000HP in stock. They get hit off in one shot always on my popup vs a good HS.
-
Of course stock plows have 1000 HP.

He asked about ramplates ;)

Right...so plows and ramplates have the same HP? The only difference is their shape/size?
-
And they are lighter!
But for most (but not all) purposes ramplates will be better at defending the parts you want defended. Snow Plows cover a lot of area, which also means they get hit a lot (and thus break off earlier).

Weight, as NC said. Also, metal value (dealing slight damage) and maybe their fractures are different.

I finally got around to retesting everything.... My assumption that things were given defaults based on their bases (as opposed to their type/category) was my downfall last time. Thanks Click for doing some legitimate testing on this.
