Title: Robot Arena 2 Speedrun?
Post by: FOTEPX on January 16, 2017, 01:16:07 AM
Just got done watching AGDQ, I think Robot Arena 2 has speedrun potential.

I love how 6 years ago (around the same time) you made another post about speed-runs. Got that speed-run fever again, hehe?

And in there, whether ol' Scrap Daddy was lying or not, said that he beat RA2 in 3 minutes. Whether that's a joke or not, that might be a good start.  I would assume winning the golden saw would be the goal.

2 Categories:
First being no building of robots.
-Take rookie bots and lead them through each tournament in career mode.

Second being building a robot.
-Build a robot and take it through career mode.

One category for good builders and one for good drivers. The only big problem with these is that it splits the community. With the size of the community, I don't know if it's wise to have 2 categories.

you can't speedrun RA2 because it's a non-linear game...

Make a robot and beat all stock enemies and tournaments in a record amount of time could be the closest thing though. Maybe we should make a contest about that.

I've always had speedrun fever, it never went away - I'm just honestly surprised you remembered that thread. Since that thread, though, I've gained a few speedrunning WR's, watched a few AGDQ's, and overall just become a lot more seasoned to it all.

I'd say we just go with whatever's fastest for now - if we get people interested, then we can further complicate things and mix it up. For now, though, let's keep it simple.

Aye, that's the idea I had - create a new team (Or use the Rookies), and get the Golden Sawblade in the quickest amount of time possible. Beating -every single bot- would just make it long and convoluted.

if you guys didn't know, the whole tournament points system for the sawblade is based on your in game points. so if you get a sh** ton of in game points in a match you can pretty much skip every tournment event

I've been watching speedruns for a while and I think I could conjure up some decent rules for a 100% category:

Stock, fresh install (i.e. no existing or importable bots in garage, stock AI, only team is the rookies, no cheaty AI or arenas, no RA2CF or 3rd party tools)
Timer starts when you click into the garage from the main menu, stops when you see the golden sawblade
You must win every tournament in your first season, any weightclass
Time includes building a bot
To be verified, runs must be recorded and uploaded to youtube or wherever

I think this would be interesting, as HW matches are faster, but it's a lot quicker to build a LW bot. It's also faster to not build to the weight limit. Presumably a popup would be the bot of choice, but who knows. aybe skipping bot building altogether and using one of the rookie bots would be fastest. The KOTH tournaments would be interesting.

Well, I can't find fault in Badger's rules... Who wants to start running this game?  :gawe:

I'll probably have a run together sometime tonight, just wondering who my competition are...

I'd give it a go.

I've gained a few speedrunning WR's
expand on that

Enhh, I used to hold the WR for speedrunning Resident Evil 4, and I also used to hold the WR for Gran Turismo 2... I don't any more, though, but I'm still really good at them.

I'll throw my hat in to the ring to try it.

So, are we agreeing with Badger's ruleset? I would be fine to do so.

Just a clarification, no cheatbot2?

No CB2, but hidden components such as the 140cm and blue snapper are fine

Fastest time to get to 100 (or more if ya want) Bots "Killed" on a team

i personally think if you are going pure stock that anyone can get it should just be v1.3 with no hidden components

it'll avoid any confusion

Not really, since the 1.4 dl on GTM is the one with unhidden components, and the version that everyone has

Sorry for the bump, but I -have- found a flaw in Badger's ruleset! You could timesave by, before going into garage, going into options, turning Arena Introductions off, and have a potentially unfair advantage over other people.

Also, I'm gonna go with Reier on this one, seeing as 1.4 is a fan-made patch, not an official patch.

EDIT: NVM. 1.3 isn't available for download any more...  :(

I don't see why turning off arena intros should be disallowed. It's like changing the text speed to past in pokemon speedruns.

I never said it shouldn't be allowed, I'm just wondering if it can be done before the start of a run, or during the run itself.

Since you can change it before you click into the garage, I don't think it should have to be included in the run.
