We all know we want an RA2 RPG for the forums so let's share idea's here :)
*Upgradable bots - Start as a noob and make progress as your bot becomes the next RA2RPG king.
*Boss battles - Face the ultimate RA2 baddies!
*Loot drops - Better opponents drop better loot, bosses drop epics like, Razor tips, shiny hubs, HP Z-tek motors etc. and normal opponents drop cruddy loot like pole spikes and square extenders.
How it could work:
*Maps! - Arena maps with enemies placed on them, each has a boss and some normal opponents.
*Random drop system - using a virtual dice roll to determine what item you get.
*RA2RPG crew - People to bring it to life, design new maps/arena/bosses, upload videos etc.
Example level map:
(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/56606Bridge Of Doom Raid.jpg)
Each fight takes place on the current map.
Loot list (WIP)
==================
Common loot (normal opponents):
*Square extenders (not 140cm).
*Sledge hammers.
*Ram plates.
Rare loot (boss drops):
*Razor tips.
*Iron spikes.
*Maces.
*Snow plows.
*Shiny hubs.
*HP Z-Tek.
RA2RPG Vanilla world map:

*Start at 250kg weight limit and get 50kg extra per map completed.
-
I can imagine something from Kid Icarus Uprising called the fiends cauldron
In a nutshell: Risk vs reward like very easy you get Sledgehammer for example
But on opposite end of scale very hard = razors!

working on the bosses, will place a small pic of the boss in top right corner.
*Start at 250kg weight limit and get 50kg extra per map completed.
*Emergency is the final boss obviously.

Why would you make Emergency a final boss ? It'll need to be rebuilt seriously before it can pose some threat, considering it barely does any damage.
Since this is a RPG we need a level system (which should be proportional to the weight available for your robot : like level 1-4 is LW, 5-9 is MW, 10-14 is HW and 15-20 is SHW), a stat system (Offense, Defense, Mobility, which are respectively the maximum percentage of weight used for each one of the three, a skill system (different skills that will not influe directly on the performance of your bot, like Looting (gets more loot), Repair (gets less damage from a loss), Tactics (unlocks ai driving and more specialized ai's), etc...)
Loot should be the same components used by that robot, simply you just earn a small part of it. I've already got enough of giant spiders dropping gold.

Well, he could give it the ability to cast Safer Sephiroth's Super Nova, but we'll have to see.

Are you capable of making a single relevant post?

Yes. Yes I am. Just figured I'd comment on the idea, that's all.
And can I just ask- what is your major obsession with following me around on here?

Will there be a DSL RPG?

Perhaps Bear as the final boss?
I think levels should be based on the version of the game as some will have more maps and some will have less. For the vanilla version it would be:
250 - level 1
300 - level 2
350 - level 3
400 - level 4
450 - level 5
500 - level 6
550 - level 7
600 - level 8
650 - level 9
700 - level 10
750 - level 11
800 - level 12
Stats I'm not too sure about, might make things too complex.
Classes:
Spinner
Rammer
Poker
Flipper
Popup
Hammer
Each class would have a starter kit made up of components that can be used to build the bot, could just have base bots (like starter pokemon) but that would mean less customisation.
Will there be a DSL RPG?
This is still in the idea's phase, we need rules/maps/loot set-up etc. before anything else.

Let's stay on topic please.

Let's stay on topic please.
Will do, Ian.

Perhaps restocked Bear as the final boss?

In the vanilla game it will be only the original stock AI, hence the vanilla name :) I will add a poll.
-
Poll has been added, vote for the 4 bots you think should be the final 4 bosses in vanilla RA2RPG.
-
BIG DOG
-
BIG DOG
For KOTH or tabletop, I agree :)
Don't forget you can vote for 4 bots people, it'll really help me make the boss list the more you vote for.
-
OK let's try something different, I want you to name the HW's you think best suit and you want to see in each of the original arenas. So far I have:
Combat arena - Bear
Electric arena - Emergency
Bridge of Doom - Sentinel
Updated overview with bosses so far:
(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/1191RA2RPG World map with bosses.jpg)
I'm thinking of putting Raptor in parking lot arena just because the name RAPtor seems to suit it :) and it is pretty late on in the game.
After this is done we can move onto each map and place lightweights/middleweights then work on loot tables and the starter kits.
-
Electric arena - Emergency
Bridge of Doom - Sentinel
Wait, what ? Emergency can't even win on Electric arena, and the arena setup does not favor it considering it can't box-rush his opponents.
also Sentinel's driving is so awful it WILL fail on an arena which is slightly difficult to navigate. such as the BoD.
They're supposed to be boss battles. They are supposed to be hard.
Put them both in tabletops, or in some arena where you can actually use a flipper and not fail embarrassingly.

Updated:

I tried to get the bot to match the arena as much as possible and still be effective. Any more suggestions guys?
-
Bump! are people happy with the boss layout? If so we can move onto setting up the rules/loot/level maps/starter kits.
-
Looks fine.
-
I don't quite understand what this is.
-
I'd probably get behind this more if it was possible. But all this stuff with theories on game types just seems interesting but impractical.
-
I don't quite understand what this is.
i think its supposed to be one of those games with level ups and turn based gameplay and all that jazz
heck you dont even need to code an entire game from scratch to make this...... .you could just mod earthbound/pokemon/final fantasy or something with ROM hacking tools which you can easily find of google
-
I'm pretty sure what Ian means is a RPG-like framework to play Ra2 with. No actual modding required.
-
So we're just supposed to use this chart to set up our matches?
-
*Challenge board on a much bigger scale (might even need it's on sub-section in tournaments).
*You build a bot with the components you start with (different starter kits are available).
*You send your bot to the host and tell them which path on the map you want to take.
*They record the matches and post them.
*There will be a virtual dice roll for components dropped by that opponent. This should be recorded and posted (the hat or another list shuffler is good for this).
*The player then edits his/her bot with the component won.
*Boss battle victories give you a larger weight limit.
We could have a topic to keep track of everyone's progress, for example:
*Bot name: SFTW
*Bot type: Saw-bot
*Bot level: 1
*location: Bridge of Doom
*Components: 2x Reverse angle motor, 1x Chewblade, 2x Shiny hub wheel.
So we're just supposed to use this chart to set up our matches?
Yup, you need to defeat some "normal" opponents before you get to the boss (as you can see in the original post's example map) so you need to select a route for your bot.

yeah thats probably too complex to last more than a day or two, simple things like tournaments (naryars tourney you were complaining about for example) tend to have a much greater chance of people caring than this system

What makes it too complex? updating entries? getting new parts to update entry? recording a few videos per bot each round?
-
Well, it'll pretty complicated, and only RPG enthusiasts (amongst others, I and Madman) would really be interested.
Hell i see a few game breakers already...
>start with LW flipper set
>get under Big Dog and Snowjob, and immobilize them
>win 2 boss battles
>instant HW status
but really Stock ai RPG should be just a template, because no one is gonna fight stock ai except the nubs because it's so weak.

you need to progress past bosses in the order, plus before you face a boss you need to clear a path to them by defeating other robots. It's intended to be the template to test out the system.
Here's an example of a flipper starter kit:
So you can see it's only the basics needed for that bot type but the more loot you collect the more variety there will be :)
-
Naryars point still stands, if its gonna be a good idea it needs GOOD ai, or at least starcore 2 as that has bad and good bots.
-
we could use the loot kinda like RA2GE unlock system

I guess that would be a good idea if Ian didn't ragequit...
