Title: Robot Arena: 1.00.000 vs. 1.0.0.3
Post by: HurricaneAndrew on August 24, 2011, 04:22:44 PM
Not sure if you guys would want this here, or if it should go elsewhere...

I was going through all my old PC games (I'm talking MS-DOS old, for the most part) and I ran across my RA1 disc. I thought "Cool, now I can try installing it again." I laid it to the side and kept looking through my games and I find another RA1 disc... Why in the Hell would I have two copies? I think I actually bought the second one for $.25 at a garage sale, but here's the fun part...

I could tell the first one was the one I bought new, as it was scratched all to Hell, but the second one wasn't and I began looking at the discs' faces and there are a few minor differences. I thought that this might mean they were different releases of RA1.

I stick the first one in the drive and open the folder showing the disc's contents. I opened the Readme and...

Code: [Select]
Robot Arena (tm)
Release Version 1.0.0.3

Well this one is the one everyone seems to have. So, I pop the other one in the drive and open up the Readme.

Code: [Select]

Robot Arena (tm)
Release version 1.00.000

Score!

Well, now that I have both releases we can get down to researching all of the differences in the original release and and the rerelease.

I mean every aspect... From the UI and AI to coding and scripts.

If they used a different font in the credits, I want to know.

Yeah, Wimpy's not in 1.3.

Is the "$" money glitch in 1.0?

1.0.0.3 has more/more difficult AI.

Actually, I am finding there are more AI in 1.00.000, at least in practice mode (Details in my next post). I can't judge the difficulty, as I haven't tried fighting them yet.

AI in practice mode of 1.00.000...

AI in practice mode of 1.0.0.3...

As you can see, there are more bots in practice mode in 1.00.000 than in 1.0.0.3. They also didn't carry over any practice mode bots from the original to the second release.

Although I haven't fought any of the original six, I am going to venture to say they are not as difficult as the new ones (except maybe the original Gammaraze).

Well, at least they kept Gammaraze.

Makes it suprising there isn't a Gammaraze 3... Maybe that's what the Saw Blade was gonna be used for? IDK.

I would +1 rep you for this if I could, for posting about something I genuinely didn't know about and that is also intriguing too.

So THAT's what wimpy.wav is for.  I always wondered where that sound was used.

I didn't even know most of those bots existed... I only knew about Gammaraze and Omnivore because the skins can still be found in the new version.

I remember having 2 copies of it. Both were different. All I can remember is that one had Pontoon and one didn't.

I still plan on doing more research into this, but I just don't have the time at the moment.

When I do find more, I will post more findings.
