Is it possible to do the paint job outside of the game somehow and get a really good finish on it? If so what is the best method?
-
You go into the bot lab and export the paint, then you open it in whatever program you choose, it helps to make the resolution higher (I use 1024x1024 because for some reason it has to be a certain multiple) then you add filters or you can edit shine etc in the bot file.

Thanks, excuse my noobishness.

No worries .

You can also open the decals from in game (aka slots) and open the layers from the game and put them over your skin too.

^this is only true if yoo keep the skin 256x256, if you want a HQ skin you gotta go at least 512x512

I do it with 1024 x 1024 and it will still look better than if you put them on in-game :V

Dummy's bot editor (found here (https://gametechmods.com//Robot_Arena2/Tools/Dummy/BOTEditor.zip)) allows you to extract the skin and preview image from a bot and replace them with whatever you want. IIRC, it allows you to use a skin with a slightly higher resolution.
-
Yeah, that's a useful tool.

This tool is great. I often even use it to look at bots I've gotten off the exchange before I put them in my game.
That brings something up that I've been wanting to ask Trovaner... Do you think it would be possible to implement this tool into the current exchange system so we can at least preview a bot to some extent before we download?
-
The original Bot Exchange that Goose made used the preview image whenever you hovered over a link. Unfortunately, we no longer have access to that version of the exchange.
Dummy's bot editor can not be used to improve the bot exchange in any way shape or form. The executable won't work on a server and we don't have the source code. The fact of the matter is that we wouldn't want to use if even if we could. It is not designed to be run from a server and would undoubtedly cause problems.
Serge and Goose have been working independently on new bot exchanges but neither of them have finished and they both appear to have moved on to other projects. The only reason why they weren't working together was because they were using two different languages (PHP for Goose and Python for Serge).
That said, I've been working on a new Bot Exchange ever since I became the Webmaster of GTM. I don't plan to embellish it with features quite yet but I can start a thread for it if people are interested in following my progress...

I am interested.

Thanks for the info, very useful.

I am interested.
Unless more people want to follow my progress, I won't be starting a progress thread for it. I will, however, continue working on it.

You could make it mandatory for people to upload a screenshot of their bot with the bot file, I know it would make things a little tougher on everyone else but hey it's an option :)

but then all of the bots that are already on the bot exchange, including the ones made by people who are no longer here...
-
no way to edit them to include a screenshot?

I hadn't thought of that... But I'd still rather it use pre-existing pictures of the bot (aka preview image) because every bot has those, so you wouldn't have to sift through all the already posted bots and make screenshots of every single one.
-
True, could make it a group effort instead of 1 or 2 people doing all the work. I just like the idea because it gives people some freedom to make a splash of the bot if they want and stuff like that.

Even then it would take a while, but that is an interesting idea; never looked at it that way.
There's also the fact that if you can upload any image as your splash or screenshot or whatever, there'll be the d-bags who'll exploit that and do something like post a bot and use the picture to make it seem like something else or use vulgar or inappropriate pictures. It's a bit farfetched, but Murphy's Law, man.

Same for me.
