If Possible: Autosave!
« on: July 11, 2009, 05:18:24 AM »
I think if it would be at all possible, an autosave feature in the bot lab would greatly reduce frustration.

I was working on a SHW shell spinner and hadnt taken the time to go back to Team HQ. Then my internet browser pops up a little window saying that I have been idle for a while and asking if I wanted to stay online, minimizing the game. Then when I tried to open the game back up to full screen, the game crashed. Of course my bot was lost through this.

It has happened to me several times and it pisses me off each time. It's usually the browser that does it, but my anti-virus is known to do it, too.

Can this be done?

I take a lot of snapshots (on the profile screen thing), I think that also saves it, but without all the going back and forward hassle.

I mean even an autosave every 5 minutes or so would help alot. I had been working on that thing for 2 hours...

when bot building something serious I go in to the options and switch off full screen sometimes so pop ups wont minimize the game but rather appear behind the window

some things may still crash it but pop ups/ new windows appearing usally wont... the easiest way to save is just test garage and back

I highly doubt that can be done.

And yup, it saves if you get into the Test Garage as well.

If you press pause and go into the test garage it take no time to load at all.
You got my vote for RA2 Wizard. Always and forever.

Saving is coded within the EXE so to my knowledge this isn't possible without the source code.

I used to have the same problem while using Full Screen but as long as I switched to the test garage or out of the Robot Workshop, it saved. But if the bot wasn't there when I looked at the team's screen, I quit and immediately went into the Teams folder to copy the .bot file into the Robot Designs folder.

Yep, hardcoded to the exe. Sorry, not feasable for now. That would require diving deep into the disssembly.

I had gone to the test garage a few times, yet it apparently didn't save when I did it.

Well, I guess if it can't be done I'll just have to start manually saving more often.

It still could be possible to recover it as long as the slot is empty now.
All you need to do is to go to Teams folder in your RA2 directory and find the correct team the bot is in(Team0=the first team in the list) then in that folder the .bot0-2 are top left to bottom left and .bot3-5 are topright to bottom right.
When you found the right .bot file you just move it to your Robot desings folder, renaming it if you want.

This atleast helped me to recover one of my bots but it had saved normally before, I just accidently scrapped it.

Yeah, the bot has been salvaged, somewhat.
