New RA2 Gamer: Recomend Mods, Add on and bots
« on: July 20, 2010, 02:43:50 AM »
i came across Ra2 while researching for the robot wars games and quickly realised how awersome
it was .Saying that the basic game has some somewhat lucking
The basic bots you start with, well they SUCK baaaaaddd. Then you start fighting the computer robots. Yes they are dumb but how awersome are they compared to your basic botsI know the game is about making your own bots but its like comparing WW 1 fighter planes to modern fighter jets. And for the beginner to design their own kickas bot is  HARD.

I’ve added the basic 1.2 batch
So basically what i am asking for is what  Mods, Add on and bots you recommend i add on now to make the game fun

A nice couple of packs of bots designs
I definitely want some good deadly bots to use , something also a new player can come in and start fighting with.

welcome to the forums, I moved your topic to the correct area, its a little confusing I know but generally the mods and designs is for releasing of mods, etc not asking what to use...

Im on a quick trip here so I will let the other members give you some suggestions  ;)

Welcome to the forums :)

for mods/addons i suggest downloading Starcore v.3 AI pack, as far as bots go i suggest either browsing the stock showcases or copying bots from the AI folder into the Robot designs folder once you download the starcore v.3 AI pack and have a look at how some of the robots are built.

Edit: you can download my LW side hammer bot (stock LW) from the bot exchange if you are really keen to see how to stack, it might give you some ideas.

Generally, we don't really do bot packs for the players use. We're all about building your own machines here, not using anybody else's.

We do, however, have AI packs with harder competition once you have increased your building skill. I'm not sure that that helps you much though.

As for mods, DSL 2.1 is the largest one out there and is pretty much as "official" as a community mod can get. Before downloading it though, make yourself a couple of copies of RA2. A lot of us have 5-10 different versions for all the different AI packs and stuff. You'll also find tons of custom components in the "downloads" section here. I'd steer clear of them, as they are frowned on for competitive building, and they make the game much too easy much too quickly.

Start a showcase before downloading Starcore. If your bots lose to the original AI they wouldn't have a chance against Starcore. Showcases=Better bot building for you.
I built that big robot on that TV show that time

What they said. But you dont need starcore V3... try something like starcore v1 or another mod.

Also, you can download both original stock and dsl 2.1 in my signature.
You got my vote for RA2 Wizard. Always and forever.

Do you guys get what he's trying to say? He's saying he finds the stock AI hard, so in the name of something holy that I wouldn't believe in, don't recommend him Starcore! XD Or am I just interpreting this wrong...

What I would do is just build your own machine, just try and learn the ins and outs of bot building - don't use the ones you get given, make your own team and start building a bot. At first it seems complicated, but in time you'll get used to what you need. You start by making the chassis, then adding components in. Obviously, it needs a control board and batteries, as well as motors and wheels for movement. You control the bots by 'wiring' the motors to spin clockwise or anti-clockwise when a button is pressed - the test garage will help frustration here.
Then, I'd recommend trying your bot, improving it if you can, then taking a screenshot and showing us in your own 'Showcase' where people can help you.

nothing is easier then standard stock he even called them dumb, but hard to beat with "the rookies". If he downloads starcore AI he will be able to see up to date robot designs and fight them with bots from the bot exchange.

Welcome to the forums, dude. ;)

Also, you might want to check out the Tutorials & Tips section for various ways to utilise the glitches in the game, Sage has got a bunch of great tutorials on things ilke stacking, snapper loading and eFFeing, I think they're the three main ones that can really extrapolate your building potential.

First things to do, however, would be to create a showcase, so that other people can offer criticism and helpful pointers on your creations. Take their advice on board and you'll be builsing good bots in no time. =D

It's fun to come up with your own designs, although it is much harder to come up with combat-efficient designs when you're new to the game. Regular Stock builders, guys like Pwnator and Sage, could tell you how to really get the best out of your bots.

Ways of Improving:
-It may seem overwhelming at first but take a look at some of the showcases for ideas and tips
-Practice building more efficient bots
-Take a look at the Beetlebro's site (its filled with different odds and ends that you might find helpful)

Downloads:
-Most people here are using the official 1.3 patch for their RA2 installs (1.2 doesn't have all the benefits of 1.3) with the AI parts unlocked (separate download).
-Hardest AI: BBEANS AI Pack (stock)
-Most Variety in AI: Starcore V3 (stock)
-Most Realistic AI: DSL (adds custom components that are balanced) (not stock)
-Unfortunately, it isn't very easy to figure out which bots are good/bad in our current bot exchange but you'll be able to figure it out if you look at some of the showcases.
-Custom components tend to make the game too easy but feel free to take a look at them (though, you should keep a separate install for them).

Thank for being understanding JoeBlo i was going to to put in in General at first but then i moved it to mod and now its back again  :laughing

I have some fun playing around sjnce the first post, the original bot designer could have been made better
Grabbed the computer bots and started modding them a lot more fun

Like to say thankyou for everyones input i'm happy to hear more

To answer a lot of the questions of where i'm coming from
the basic game with the steep learning curve for bot building does not sell itself
 imagine this scenerio

Me rocking up at  the Lan party

Me: Hey Dude remember Robot wars on TV, I got this great new game RA2 thats lets you build your own Death Meca and fight it out
Dude: That show was great i loved Razor show it to me
I boot up the game and show the basic starter bots
Dude: Those bots.........Really suck
I begin to show them how to build their won 1 hour latter they loose their passion and go play Counter Strike

Lets try that again

I show two of the custom souped up bling Bling robots fighting and show him the basic control and starts fighting
Dude: Bro that was APOCALYPTIC    :gunz: show me more
then i show him how to do some changes to his bot, paint spray, decals, changes a few weapons to his taste etc

Call it shallow but the basic game with the steep learning curve for bot building does not sell itself

If you want good bots, right under the Gametechmods banner, there is a link that says "bot exchange." There you will find all of the bots that are available for download for player use. Make sure you only download from the leftmost column as anything from the DSL section will crash your game.

The best bots that are there are built by Pwnator and Virus Bomb, so if impressing your friends is what you want, go for those.

Hope this helps :)
