Just curious, but why does most newbies these days instantly go for IRL DSL/Ironforge instead of trying Stock ?
-
IRL is easier.
Takes less skill to learn and win essentially.
-
I guess it's just a matter of opinion and preference.
-
They come in having watched Robot Wars/Battlebots and want to emulate what they've seen on TV, I expect,
-
Plus the fact stock is incredibly unforgiving with regards to building robots.
-
and the fact that stock isnt fun

and the fact that stock isnt fun
even then not a lot of newbies bother to even try DSL/Ironforge Standard which is more fun than IRL imo

Babies and toddlers?

Stock has a very steep learning curve imo, plus the fact that you need to exploit glitches to build a half decent bot probably throws a lot of newbies off
also most if not all of the good stock bots look nothing like the ones they would've seen on Battlebots/Robot Wars so their expectations of a robot combat game aren't met
-
because noobs are unable to make a combat effective bot so they go to IRL where that's acceptable
-
because nothing about stock or dsl standard looks cool
-
cause stock is a pain in the ass while IRL is fairly easy to do a good bot in, you just need to make a drum with enough weapons (inb4 i get flamed by all the irl fans here)

i mean you're right, i've been saying that ever since my salty losses to that mw drum skbt made

I know there are reasons DSL IRL is stuck to a poor thumb in the past months.
As for what IRL goes, these catagorys have to work what IRL must be:
-must be cool looking
-must be neat looking
-must not be very destructive
-MUST be possible in real life
-
Ironforge is made to be easy.
-
i liked irl the most because it offers a mid point between combat ability and looks. dsl standard is fun to watch but the few bots i have built standard always seem to be a chore to make. Ironforge is easy so i don't know why more people get into it besides just a lower amount of tournaments. stock bots look less good than dsl standard bots to me so i always would choose dsl.

I feel like RedAce hit the bulls eye with his answer.

I came in and never wanted it to look irl. I always liked having a bit of creative freedom for my bots. Plus, I never picked up stock until later because stock is very very difficult, due to the insane meta-game.
