Umm here's a few ideas, make an arena with pickups, little balls rolling around, blocks, whatever.  Also if you could make it so we could have mass battles, around 16 robots in a fight, possible teams.  Make the AI even smarter, make a few fixes to the physics, I made a 478 kg bot that could get catapulted 90 feet in the air, and then FLY.  Also minor graphical tweaks would be nice too, the game looks like it's from 2000.  One last thing, figure out a way to make it *cough* easier *cough* to mod this game, for example, make models in Wings 3D and all the info is in a spreadsheet format, or wordpad.

The area which you are suggesting might lag as heck because if two things overlap each other in RA2 that causes serious FPS dropping.

Also having mass battles is impossible because the game's exe code should be tweaked then and that's the most sh**tiest thing in the world to do because dsl-tc devs can't source code from anywhere.

Making AI smarter would require a loads of lines code to move it extremely smartly and that would require individual code to each bot which is going to be AIed.

The physics can't be fixed because those are also hard coded to the game's exe. Also there's few glitches which causes so called "havok explosions" which causes bots fly like affected by explosion wave. Also some bots may cause its components shake like mad and that causes other glitch which causes bots to fly.

And isn't this game already from year 2000 or so? So it can't look much better because the game engine can't handle the new graphics. Plus if you want to, just take a look to the real RA2 without any mods and so. You'll notice that RA2 with DSL-TC 2.0 mod is way better looking.

And modding this game isn't easy no matter how much you would produce tutorials for it because this game isn't designed to be modded and this is very old game.

All those are good ideas but they are either very hard to do or impossible with this kind of old game engine and without source code.

Umm, here's an idea: Don't ask people to do things you couldn't do yourself. And it's from 2/8/03.

yeah, i think everyone would like to have a 16 robot battle, that would be carnage! but at the end of the day, like everyone else has said it would be almost unplayable due to the amount of lag that would occur. besides, as Mr Weedy stated, a 16 robot battle will be impossibe to create because of the games coding.

What kind of PC's are you using, I see no reason why this game should EVER lag, if my laptop can run it then it's gotta be low tech.  I am using a brand new E-Machines, 3.4 Ghz processor, 512mb RAM, and a 256 ATI Extreme PCI-express video card, on 512 kb/s Cable...  Where is the issue?  And I think also that a Dodgeball arena would be neat, have 2 teams of 2 one robot gathers the balls up and the other chucks them over a small wall at the enemy, or use no walls at all and make the dodgeballs heavy for massive damage.

Well i'm using a Windows XP, does that answer your question? but anyway the more bots that there are in one battle the more it will lag, don't ask me how since i'm not a very technical person and I don't know my PC's stats, I'm just pretty sure that's the case.

Actually, I found this game runs perfect on Windows 2000, on an ATI Radeon 9250 with 128mb onboard, and 1 GB motherboard RAM, at 2.66 Ghz, on my MSI, Full Detail none-the-less.  Also this game may run under Wine, so HA.

The reason why game would lag is the Havok engine. It really couldn't handle that amount of robots because it is designed to handle max. 4 bots at the time, at least I assume so.

Also you can EASILY make the whole game lag almost to its death when you just cause two components to go through each other which weren't inside each other in the beginning of the match. Or cause the havok explosion to sink your bot to an arena's floor and that will quite surely lag like heck.

If you don't believe me, ask Clickbeetle about the wheels which he spawned in the combat arena and how the game was almost jammed all the time. If there's even two wheels or any other components inside each other and they shouldn't be like that, the havok engine can't handle it and it causes some serious lag.

I have also experienced this bot sinking and components inside each other lag moments few times.

My laptop clocked at 1.2 Ghz with a 16mb Graphics Card and 256mb of Ram can run DSL just fine, why can't we mod it to use Havok Engine 2?  It may be faster.  I think an arena where using ground pickups instead of just regular attacks would be neat, like the cannon or the soccerball.  Or a better system for Clusterbots.  A double bar system too, links 2 ends together, for better strength in what you build.  The AntBattery in DSL has a broken hitbox, I can cram 12 of them together in a space the size of the mega battery, if they are inside each other.

---------------------------

Stupid Havok Engine, lets me make flying robots, Sheesh.
