I lost my RA2 disk...
« on: January 03, 2013, 08:37:50 AM »
Hey guys, I've not been on for a few years now and I'm not sure if this is correct section of the forum to post in but anyway... I lost my disk and just want to play this game for a couple of hours for nostalgic reasons really, Is there any way I could download it for free or will I have to buy it again? I don't know if you're allowed to ask this but I genuinely have just lost the disk haha, thanks for your time :)

Pretty sure we're not really meant to, but it's abandonware let's be honest. The devs are hardly trying to milk any more money out of it, I don't think they even recognize our existence...

Yeah, I think RA2 qualifies as being Orphaned at this point.

Hey badnik! Heck, I recognise all of you apart from Jamin! Surprised you're all still on here! Anything of interest happen over the last 2-3 years?

Anyway, back to me being a noob. I just opened up the stock version and I'm getting incredible lag on the main menu. I entered into an exhibition match and there was no lag at all but still loads in the menus. Also the resolution is being weird... I always have massive black bars at both sides of the screen when playing fullscreen, I've tried all resolutions but none get rid of the problem. Any help? Thanks again :)

Maybe it didn't extract properly? Try the DSL version and see if you get the same problem.
You got my vote for RA2 Wizard. Always and forever.

RA2 doesn't support 16:9 aspect ratio. So if you have a widescreen monitor, just run it windowed.

Man Manu! You were always one of my favorite forum members to have kicking around.  So good to have you back.

In the past two to three years two major things have happened:

-Hax Mode was discovered in stock and stirred a bit of controversy.  It still has not been widely embraced by the community, but it is a huge discovery.

-IRL (In Real Life) building has become rather popular over the years with DSL.  There are several builders that build bots in DSL that are aimed at aesthetics and accuracy rather than exploiting the unbalanced parts in DSL for a competitive edge.   It is a nice alternative that allows more creativity.

Yep, exactly the same there aswell... Surely it can't just be my bad laptop or it would be just as bad in battle, if not worse?

Hey JD! Thanks for the update, I think I was there for when people first started with the DSL realism thing but hax mode is new to me, I'll go and check that out now :)

EDIT: Also, when I click the options from the main menu it works absolutely fine on that but as soon as I go back to the main menu it goes back to being laggy.

1) Try running it in compatibility mode for Windows XP, or 98 if that doesn't work.
If that doesn't work:
2) Try running it as an admin
If that doesn't work:
3) Disable desktop composition. This worked for similar lag problems for my version of VB6.
If that doesn't work:
Try them all together.

To change these, right click on Robot Arena 2.exe, go to properties, then the compatibility tab. Should look a little like this:

Post your results, hopefully this helps!

Thank you for your reply badger but unfortunately none of your suggestions worked :( The only thing that made a difference was running it in compatibility mode for 98 which made it horrendously slow to start up and close down... I find it strange how it works fine in the options menu and in battle.

Also, I'm by not technical at all so don't know if there's anything in this but I went on the task manager whilst RA2 was up and the CPU usage was fluctuating between 100% and 80ish%

Can you post your PC specs? Have you tried it on another PC? Maybe extracting it to a USB stick and running it from there? Making a new partition on your hard-drive for RA2? Fiddling around with the in-game settings? If you have Counter-Strike 1.6 or Source, how do they run on your PC? Maybe your PC isn't good enough for RA2, although I HIGHLY doubt that.

I have a packard bell easynote TM80 with windows 7 64 bit. As I said I'm not technical so I wouldnt know what specs to post but you could probably google to find out? The only game I play on my laptop is Football manager 2013 and that works fine. I have done everything in the options menu of RA2 but nothing works.

I'll try extracting to an external hard drive and playing from there. Thanks for your help :)

To find out your PC specs, go to the start menu, then click 'System properties' at the top, then tell us your processor and your RAM, but your PC seems fine. Oh, and check that you only have 2 mouse plugged in. It may sound silly, but I had 3 mice and 2 keyboards plugged into my PC a couple of weeks ago.
