General thoughts on wheels
« on: July 15, 2011, 10:27:50 AM »
The wheel options in DSL are pretty good right now, but one thing that exists in real combat, but is not prevalent in DSL is the option for different diameters/widths of the same wheel type. You can get the classic Colson in 1-5/8" diameter through 12" diameter in widths of 7/8" to 3" depending on wheel size, banebots is the same, with a smaller range and different grippyness levels. The same diameter/width situation applies to the metal rim/foam tread style wheels used on many larger bots.

I don't know the difficulty level of doing this, but setting up a few of the common wheel types such that you had several diameters/widths, and possibly tread compounds(trading grip for hp) could add a lot of variety to DSL drive systems.

Sounds like a good idea, but unless someone's willing to put in the time and effort for it, it's just another thing for Click to do.

Sounds interesting. I'd get to work on it myself, but I don't have any clue how to code for RA-2, so I can't be of service.

I think it's more a modeling issue than a coding one. Not sure if 3dsm allows easy resizing or if it's something that ends up being a pain. (for example, if I wanted to make a range of diameters in solidworks, I'd just have to change a single number for each size and save as a new name, if there was a way to import the .step files (or any other format solidworks can save models as) I can save with solidworks into 3DSM, it'd take me about an hour to make a ton of wheels)

Edit: Looking at it, solidworks can export inventor format files, and 3dsm can import inventor format files. If someone who can make parts wants to help on the 3dsm side, I'd be happy to take a shot at seeing if there's a way to take a solidworks file and massage it into RA2

https://forum.solidworks.com/message/131200 has some useful info on converting.

I believe Click said something about resizing arenas using Excel so the same could probably happen with wheels.

You see, at any time you mod DSL2 you run into the problem of legitimacy.

A lot of good can come out of minor tweaking, but it doesn't happen because they instantly become custom components when anyone outside tries to tinker with it.  It's just like how NAR AI tries to do minor changes and instantly the whole community takes a step back, installing only the AI folder and nothing else.

So yeah, nobody mods it because nobody will play the modded version.  Your best bet it to suggest it for DSL3, [troll]it might even come out before backlash[/troll].

Didn't click say at one point it was actually planned to come out not long after backlash?
Or is that just me wishfully thinking?

Better than GK since 2009.
I think SM is a pretty cool guy, eh builds unicycle-bots and doesn't afraid of anything

Lol you should have seen Joeblo's Calender.

Its not that funny.. just 2011.. which is precisely the problem..

Now it it was a 2009 calender.. well I would have Backlash and all my other ongoing projects already done..

But things are *fingers crossed* going to get more stable soon..

Anyway back on topic now..

One step ahead of you. ;)

The Colson wheels seen on my Shish-Kabot replica will be available in several sizes (not quite as many as you listed but at least 3).
