Functional Components: Detachables, Powered Steering Units
« on: July 09, 2005, 11:05:06 AM »
Detachables! Push a button, the arm of a robot breaks off.
The piece may small as an extender or maybe as large as a motor.
What is the point? Make obstacles for your opponent? Break off that arm before your opponent uses it to his advantage? Purge your robot in-game of broken fighting weapons?
What use would an extender be without that motor and axe on it?

Powered steering unit: It was an odd thing to have, and it isn't completely useless. In fact, maybe we could dump the whole powered part and just make it a steering unit. That way, we could attach motors onto it instead of wheels.

I have no idea of how the game works, so I am not positively sure these ideas are possible.  :)

Detachables can't be done, at least not how you would want them to work (it MIGHT be possible to make an arena that would cause parts to randomly fall off your bot, but that would be dumb).

The powered steering unit seems to be a popular request, probably at least the stock one will be un-hidden if a new model isn't made.  I like the idea of an unpowered steering unit though... more realistic.  And easy to do (I think... hope).

I think it would be pretty easy to make, just turn the power down to 0, and then for the motor attachment, just put Firebeetle's mega adapter, then the motors, wouldn't that work?

I don't quite understand what you mean.  Would you have a mega adapter with a motor with power of 0 on it, and that's it?

In any case, it wouldn't be a good idea to use a mega adapter because then it could be used for stuff other than detachables.  DSL is supposed to be realistic and the mega adapter is a cheat component meant for goofing around with weird, unrealistic concepts.

I also tried making an unpowered steering unit, and I did it, but it didn't work :(   It was a 90 degree limited servo which you could attach motors to, but when you moved the servo so the wheels were turned, the bot still drove straight for some reason.  So most likely the best you can hope for is the stock steering unit, unfortunately.

Well, what I meant was to make the steering unti 0 power, put the mega adapters on (just so the motors attach) and put on the motors with power. I think I'm going to test that now...

Is this Possible?

Or...Is this even possible? Make a special weapon that hurts your robot like it was an enemy weapon... And then have a weak extender... Is that possible?

If you want something to fall off real easy just use a poly extender. One bump and it is gone.

Firebeetle tried the cannon thing before, only he was trying to make a multibot instead of a detachable part, but it's the same concept.  It didn't work very well, and there would also be no way to make a cannon that only fires once.

Sorry if we all sound so pessimistic and always shooting down ideas.  RA2 has a lot of limitations.  BUT FB may have an idea on how to make a slam cam now...

I might also be able to make custom powered steering units.

no click it's ok... I was just wandering if that would be a way... just to say something about the multi bot thing... I could say it wouln't work from the start... the other bot would have to have an RA2 chassis... maybe I heard that from you though... oh  well slam cam would be good... or you could just go to orbit cam and zoom in ALL the way... thats how I do it... also how is it that you make these cool componets and arenas?... just pm me if you want.
