Another try?
« on: February 08, 2011, 02:50:51 PM »
Hi guys! ;D
Lately Ive been digging through topics & Looking for Robot Combat games like RA2 but ofcourse... No luck :\
Then I saw this thread of some Robot Combat game in Development by some guy, But the source code is lost...

I know you guys already did this but what about asking Atari (Or something?) for the source code?

The limitations of RA2 is the game itself, So we need something new & Not just mods to keep things spicy, Dont you think? :3

It was awesome!! And that made me think about how a game like RA2 would be now...
I think RA2 was released on 2003? Thats pretty long ago.

RA2 could be so much better right now, Extremely awesome :3

Oh, that one. Hell yes, that was awesome. All we need to do is incorperate the bot lab into there and we have gold. Maybe us and some of the GTM coders/idea-givers could team up and work on the project? RA3, BotApp 2, PRD - Pure Robotic Destruction... Ooh, the name Idea's i'm getting are sending tingles down my spine!

The problem is that the (awesome) creator lost the source code of BotApp :\
We dont have anything from RA2 either... So we are basically stuck with just modding what we have: RA2.

Thats why I made this topic, To try to make something new again, If possible because modding RA2 wont last forever & Nobody's (Game developers) is interested in Robot Combat games...

Really? Proof, we could help them so much, I would personally donate money if it came down to that, I want something which is gonna break this robot combat game barrier.

If you are talking about buying the source code to RA2, I brought it up a long time ago in a thread that is buried somewhere deep in General Discussion.

My idea was to have the willing members chip in what they could and have Click or someone else that is of high rank in the community talk to Atari and see if we could buy the source code.

The idea was shot down...

They won't just give away the code. Somewhere else this was already said. One part being Havok. That engine is not owned by Atari, thus they can't just 'give away' the source code.

Interesting thought Anyone heard of Monster Truck Madness 2 (hypothetical, I know some have) what about MFR ?

(ok at this point you probably saying WTF but there is a point)

An individual basically made a plugin for the game (MFR) that runs itself using the source files from MTM2 on a new open physics engine.. (A more realistic one at that)

Im not big on my exe knowledge and I know RA2 is sealed off without a source BUT If someone could manage it for MTM2 maybe, just maybe it could be doable for RA2 if we find a compatible engine...

Constructing the game itself could be a different story and basically MFR just boots to a selected Truck into a selected Track, no AI, Races or anything like that..

Could be a feeble dream of a madman but hey worth a mention..

We could atleast get SOMETHING from Atari to make RA2 go further, Not the ENTIRE source code maybe but anything else that would help in changing the game or something?
We dont need to buy the legal rights of the games as we wont sell it around I guess?

Just something to change stuff in it, Like physics engine, etc...
You can mod a game to a certain extent & RA2 will probz reach its limit with DSL 3.

Or what about encouraging them to make a new RA? Or to better the one made or something...
IDK, SHow them DSL 3 when its done or make a list of how many people would like it or something, Coz RA2 will die if not :|

What I mean is, Lets give it another try...
Lets ask again for the source code, Its been 7 years since the relase of RA2, People are not interested in Robot Combat Games anymore, They arent developing it anyways.
Its just us wanting to "mod" the game further to have more fun with it, Without intentions of making a complete new game & Sell it around...

I guess those things could be said & Stuff like that...

We would only change the Physics to make it less buggy & A few touches to the game itself?
Like:
Adding: New Bot Classes, Extending weight limit, Warning of weight limit (You can choose what weightclass itll be & It warns you wehn you pass it?)

Its not like we would make a compelte new game with HD graphics...
I know the physics engine would be super hard though.. :\

Basically, all we really need is a HD remake of RA2, with a few added extras, like improved chassis making and removal of Havoks, AGOD and Rule of 7.

I HATE RULE OF 7 SO FREAKIN' BAD YOU CANNOT COMPREHEND MY PURE UNADULTERATED ANGER

But remember we arent game developers... And there are VERY little people that can actually do something (2/3..?)
So we cant do much :\

A new physics engine would fix the Havoking & AGOD I think, And the other things wouldent be SUCH a huge problem...

They will not release the source code. Period. They don't own the rights to the havok engine (which is thoroughly integrated into the game). Having a developer that regularly visits the forum or getting new patches from ATARI would be best IMO.

You would have better luck petitioning and/or donating for a new game (as opposed to getting the source). The target audience for a robot combat game is far too limited (as you said) for them to be paying developers to make one. By starting a petition, they can look at the numbers and try to determine a budget. Developing games/programs does not come cheap (unless of course, they are not paying the developers, advertisers, copyrights, etc.). You also can't expect them to invest their time and money on a game that only 300 people (which is about five times as many active members that we have now). You have to keep in mind that they would only do it if they thought they would make money off of it. Wikipedia has nice break down of what would go into making a game (here). If I had to make an educated guess, it would take about 5 million dollars to make/sell a new game. Assuming our goal was to guarantee a fifth of that, we would need over 20,000 signatures (for a $50 computer game).

Serge was working on a robot combat game a while back but due to the community's overwhelming demands (crushable chassis, a better botlab, realist combat, etc.), it was put on the back burner. Last I heard, he was working on a new physics engine that supported the benefits of both soft and rigid body physics (possibly what he released for testing yesterday). It is no small feat to make a game with little to no help (especially when your not getting paid).

With the sergepatcher, we can extend the weight limit and add warnings for when the bot gets close to each weight limit (or even prevent them from exceeding a certain weight). Adding new weight classes would be the only challenge but even that has a solution (at the cost of a few features that nobody uses). The rule of 7 and max sphere could also be bypassed if only we could find them. We might even be able to fix the axle loading glitch using the sergepatcher (if the problem is what I think it is). There might even be a way of eliminating the max angles and proximities between chassis points but it would be extremely difficult to make it not be glitchy.
