Title: Flail SNS unrealistic?
Post by: Badger on July 20, 2011, 06:04:40 PM
I thought flails were unrealistic, untill I saw this:

The robot with the huge wheels has a wrecking ball on the end of some wire, similar to a flail!

Discuss.

Flails are realistic. Sns' are realistic. It's just that when they are spammed with weapons is when it goes from realistic to flat-out cheap.

The weapon exists I'll grant you but it's doing naff-all in terms of damage, whereas the in-game flail SNS are devastatingly powerful.  That's where the real issue of "realistic" comes into play.

Flail SNS are realistically unrealistic. It's realistic in the sense fence that it's possible to build one but unrealistic in the sense that it's stupidly powerful in RA2.

Flail SNS are realistically unrealistic. It's realistic in the fence that it's possible to build one but unrealistic in the sense that it's stupidly powerful in RA2.
In another word, it is DSL Realistic, but should not be allowed for IRL stuff.

Although, stuff like metal hinge wedge or weapon spamming should also fall into this category.

And then the problem arises when we realize about 90% of the game mechanics does not match IRL.  IRL realism then becomes too vague in any competitive sense.  I can just as easily argue the things that are working in this game are "realistic" where the things not working are "unrealistically underpowered".  When I watch IRL battles I see big damage and parts flying around after a few hits, but the IRL builds on DSL can't kill after 3 full minutes.  Therefore IRL can only emulate look, because DSL can do so accurate, but not function, which is impossible in DSL no matter what restriction you put in.

DSL realism by contrast is very easy to understand without going contra to RA2 mechanics, so competitions and combat effectiveness are more relevant here.

Aren't the flail attachments inconsistent anyways? (allowing the weapon to pass through places it technically shouldnt)  I always wondered about that.   If that is the case... then yeah, that is the big difference between realistic DSL and the video.

Flail SnS with a few large weapons are fine. It's just when you have absolute loads of flails that it becomes incredibly cheap (but DSL realistic still) and that it uses a variant of the trinity glitch to do much more damage than normal.

What I am saying is that every single flail in a flail SnS goes out of it's socket, like a small-scale trinity piston SnS or a flier. Therefore, it is unrealistic.

And yes, I am aware I am agreeing with Foxpet, as awkward as this sounds.

If going out of socket is the standard for realism, you will need to get rid of every single axle, metal hinge, skirt hinge, pistons, and motors in this game.  Because at one point or another they will go out of socket.

Also, flippers and popups benefit from this "out of socket" more than you might think.  Flippers wouldn't have those "super flips" and popups wouldn't be able to bypass half sheets without it.
