Okay, so IRL has seen a meteoric rise in popularity, and it led me to think, why is nothing being done for this?
I'm imagining Nar AI (rebuilt teams and user teams) but IRL, basically.
I don't have a great deal of time for it but I just thought I'd throw it out there - if all the major IRL builders got in on this, it wouldn't be all that difficult to do, and I think it'd be good for those who prefer that style of building to have something equivalent to test against.
Feel free to shoot this down as it is only an idea. :)

Sounds alright. Some might be hard to convert.
-
I think it'd be slightly trickier to come up with a definite theme/gimmick, like in Vanilla Stock, as you like to call it. It might be better if we just put a few things together as teams do IRL, but you could still tell they came from the same group. Similar to Near Chaos Robotics, or that lot Scrap did recently.

but if you were to use some of the bots from that and finish it off, adding more bots aswell then it would be great
-
NFX, be quiet about the secret plans!
-
I didn't know they were secret plans. Apologies, et cetera. =)
-
ooh secret plans
tell us tell us tell us NOW!!! 8D
-
The plan is, to make "secret plans" about some project, get everyone hyped up about it, then get them to do all the work! :P
-
ooh
can I get in on this?
-
Competition for NAR AI ? GOOD ! Come ! It will be an epic battle for dominance over the AI pack scene !
...also I can send some teams purely built for the rule of cool.
-
I can send a few flipper bots ?
-
we don't know who's coordinating this yet.

coughrealismaicough
aha. I did have a search, couldn't find anything, but thought there was something.
Also - if people so wish, I can co-ordinate this, but it would have to wait until after I pluck up the courage to tackle the Pokemon videos, and it would also cancel PokAImon (which isn't that special anyway).
Funnily enough, been sat on this idea for a while, just not said anything in case of any 'secret plans'... let me know if these secret plans are actually real XD

Shouldent we set the rules of IRL building in stone before doing this? As far as I know IRL building is subjective...
Some people might not care if 1 want is powering a Dual Perm but some other might...
When I asked what IRL building was i was told: "Something that can be made IRL" so I make something really simple (A motor & Pasted a 425 disc on it)
Then I check the splashes of the tournament & See that some other people made more efficient/competent bots with 10 beater bars spinning orso.
At that moment Im feeling like sh** coz I see that I could have made something better & Still be counted as IRL.
Just like with DSL there should be rules that are obvious.
Right now whats happening with IRL Building is that people are building "Less than efficient" bots in the hopes that its bad enough to be IRL.
Youre not building the best IRL bot you can, Youre building the simplest DSL bot you can.
Atleast that how I feel about IRL :P

It's a shame, that, and I do agree with you. With the majority of IRL tournaments, the majority of members submit something that you would see IRL, like Thyrus or DSC would do. But there's normally one or two members who don't really go that far with it, and you do end up with a substandard DSL bot when that happens, with things like exposed drive axles, weapon spam, or Metal Hinges (poor show), but I've never really been too bothered about the internals, personally. That's what I've been thinking with IRL building, you submit something that you woud SEE in real life competition, rather than something that works like it would. You can't build a ring spinner in RA2 without being unrealistic, for instance, and a 4-bar linkage simply doesn't exist in-game. But then that brings it back to IRL being a subjective viewpoint, and the fact that if we try to put rules in stone, we'll invariably have members going "But you can do X IRL, and there's no way of making Y realistic otherwise in the game", and so forth. I would hope that bots are properly scrutinized before being added to the mod, but there will certainly be some good IRL bots in there, regardless of if we get a few substandard DSL bots in there as well. If you take a look at Cage Of Mirrors from B4ttleBots, I think that's more what we're going for. Looks fantastic, but isn't very good in battle. Aesthetics before efficiency, and so forth.

If someone is doing this he should ban this "perm on top of the chassis" bots. the spinning weapon always cuts the extender and i dont see how that is realistic

It's the same principle as a ring spinner. With a ring spinner in RA2, the disc has to at least cut through the wheels to make it work, but you would see a ring spinner IRL, just as you would see a motor-on-top spinner IRL. It's only made unrealistic through the game mechanics.
-
I would send a team or two.
-
I think if you make two rules: that all bots have to actually have the realistic battery power to power their weapons and that construction must be realistic then I think that would be a great patch, like the original game, but with the good things of DSL like components and AI. I'd also suggest leaving out the weird arenas and just concentrating on the battle arenas. I'd be up for making a few bots for this if anyone is interested in taking this on.
-
I also agree that the bots that do nothing but spin should be banned from the patch.

Spinners always have very small wheels inside of the chassis itself. So if you make an IRL spinner it would be something like a cube with a dual perm in the missle & 2 tiny wheels next to it on tiny motors.
You cant afford having NPCs & Hypno wheels on a spinner, Thats a sacrifice youll have to make. You also cant spam 1028273817924618 razors like DSL shell spinners. 1 Beater bar per sheet/2 sheets & Thats it.
Im actually thinking of making a bot like that.

I made one with no extender cutting at all though...
-
I could contribute a few bots. Hadron, Defenestrator and Razer Sharp Techno Bunny come to mind immediately. Could build more I guess. xD
-
i can coordinate this
EDIT: it really is too much like realism ai
-
i can coordinate this
I'd rather you didn't.

I'd rather you didn't.
any reason why

Why don't we just have a thread/download section for IRL bots? Instead of a whole patch, why not just have some space set aside for people who want to build realistic bots, so they can be downloaded and used as people want.
Just set rules about what you can't do rather than what you can do, which would be quicker, for example no stacking, no spinner bots or flail bots or whatever they're called. And maybe a few rules about weapons, so weapons can't have about a million spikes on one wheel or something. Any thoughts?
Maybe just this rule would work: After a bot is built ask: Would you see it on Robot Wars? If yes: its good, if no, its bad. Simples.

Nah, build DSL realistic, i doubt you would like all the restrictions on IRL.
