Downloaded version graphics

I got the downloaded version of DSL 1.0 to see if I could find what was different with the graphics, and I found something exceedingly strange.

The contents of some of the files are switched around.  For example, in the teamhq folder, if you open up editteam.gib, it's really one of the skull tga's.  And if you open up the skulls, they're really .gib files even though they have a .tga extension.

If anyone with the downloaded version wants to help get DSL 2.0 with graphics out for their game, do me a favor and open editteam.gib or skull1.tga, and post here if the contents are all goofy (if they are, editteam.gib should look like a bunch of gibberish, and skull1.tga should look like an orderly set of parameters).

I'm not sure this is it, because I can't see how the files could work with different extensions, but it's worth looking into just in case.

But your game is messed up isn't it?  editteam.gib would have been replaced with the CD version, but skull1.tga wasn't.  So so far it fits.

Anyone else want to confirm this?

The files I've found with switched content are these.  Apparently the relationships are only one way: while teamhq/editteam.gib has the contents of botlab/heading_arrow.gmf, botlab/heading_arrow.gmf doesn't have the contents of teamhq/editteam.gib.  It has the contents of botlab/wiring.gib.

teamhq/editteam.gib = botlab/heading_arrow.gmf
teamhq/hq_events.gib = event_calendar.tga
teamhq/nobot_cell.gib = botlab/ctrl_button_props.gib
teamhq/bot_cell.gib = botlab/ctrl_analog_props.gib
teamhq/eventcell_inprogress.gib = botlab/ctrl_switch_props.gib
teamhq/team_cell.gib = teamhq/roboticsteam.tga
teamhq/skull1.tga = botlab/botlabwin.gib
teamhq/skull100.tga = botlab/comp_preview.gib

botlab/adjust_burst.gib = either botlab/AP_box_selected.gmf or botlab/AP_box_unselected.gmf
botlab/AP_box_unselected_txt.gmf = botlab/control_cell.gib
botlab/armor_plastic.tga = botlab/testarena.gib
botlab/ch_stepbuttons.gib = teamhq/teamhq.gib
botlab/colorpicker_target.tga = botlab/wiring_controller.tga
botlab/comp_properties.gib = botlab/components.gib
botlab/heading_arrow.gmf = botlab/wiring.gib
botlab/heading_arrow_txt.gmf = botlab/wiring_connection_analog.gib
botlab/importbot.gib = botlab/wiring_connection_switch.gib
botlab/surfacelayer.gib = either botlab/AP_box_selected.gmf or botlab/AP_box_unselected.gmf

I think this might be it.  It would explain why there were no differences with Ham's UI files, and why using the regular graphics on the downloaded version crashes the game.  If so the DL version is seriously messed up!  You can't even open any of those files without renaming them.

So yeah... I'd like someone with a working downloaded version to have a look at some of those switched files and see if they match my findings.

Yeah, it looks like that's how the files are different.  So making the graphics work for the DL version is a matter of moving and renaming files.

From those files you uploaded, I've also found out:

teamhq/event_calendar.tga = teamhq/hq_history.gib
botlab/ctrl_button_props.gib = teamhq/hq_robots.gib
botlab/ctrl_analog_props.gib = botlab/crossing_wires.tga
botlab/ctrl_switch_props.gib = botlab/mouse_azr.tga
teamhq/roboticsteam.tga = teamhq/event_winner.gib
botlab/botlabwin.gib = botlab/colorpicker_target.tga
botlab/comp_preview.gib = botlab/importbot.gib

botlab/AP_box_selected.gmf = botlab/armor_aluminum.tga
botlab/AP_box_unselected.gmf = botlab/control_cell.gib
botlab/control_cell.gib = teamhq/bot_cell.gib
botlab/testarena.gib = botlab/export_texture.gib
teamhq/teamhq.gib = botlab/supershine.tga
botlab/wiring_controller.tga = botlab/chassis_structure1.gib
botlab/components.gib = botlab/comp_adjust.tga
botlab/wiring.gib = botlab/armor_titanium.tga
botlab/wiring_connection_analog.gib = teamhq/eventcell.gib
botlab/wiring_connection_switch.gib = botlab/wiring_connection_button.gib

Man, this is complicated.  But fortunately, it looks like only the teamhq and botlab folders are messed up.

If you could zip up your teamhq and botlab folders and host them, I could probably get the download version graphics working.  It would just be a lot of complicated detective work.

OK everybody try this:

Complete DSL graphics for downloaded version.

I think it will work, but with no way to test it I'm not 100% sure.  I recommend making a backup copy of your UI folder, just in case.

If it works, then I'll put that in a complete DSL 2.0 download version.

Didn't work for me click. Just crashed when I double-clicked on a team. Do you need do extract into a separate folder and copy/paste into UI?

I think that you're onto it though. Theres just probably a few more files that need to be swithched. Keep going, and thanks for the effort your'e putting in. The same goes for all of you who are helping with the DL graphics.

Very odd. Then again, I had an Identical problem with DSL 1.2, so maybe its just a problem with my game. Ill have a look.

EDIT: Played around with the folders and got the graphics to work, although the menu butons at the top of the bot editor are out of focus. Is this happening to everyone or is it just me?

It looks like you're missing the updated botlabwin.gib.  In the downloaded version, that would be teamhq/skull1.tga.

Im Stupid, so what do I have to do to clear them up?

EDIT: I think I know how to fix it, you just copy the skull1.tga file into the botlab folder and rename it botlabwin.gmf, dont you? Problem is I can't change the file type. It's always a targa file, no matter what I put as the extension. It says that it's botlabwin.gib, but if you highlight it and go into properties it still says its a Targa file. Any hints on how to fix this? I could do it on my windows 98 computer, but my new XP won't let me.

skull1.tga should be a gib file... I'll have to double check those UI folders ewan uploaded.

I meant gib... I said later on in my post that it was a gib but made a mistake at the start.

So All I do is rename it skull1.gib and put it in the botlab folder? And to ewan, I can't remember how I fixed it, but I think I uploaded into a separate folder, copied and pasted them into UI, did something with the stock UI, and then did something with the DSL UI. Can't renember clearly though. Just remember to make a backup of your current UI.

No, skull1.tga goes in the teamhq folder.

This is how it works.  In the CD version, there is botlab/botlabwin.gib and teamhq/skull1.tga.  In the downloaded version, botlabwin.gib is renamed to "skull1.tga" and moved to the teamhq folder, but the contents stay the same (even though it has the .tga extension, it is still a gib file).  The normal skull1.tga is in turn renamed to "hq_history.gib" but with the contents remaining as a .tga file.

What I did for the downloaded version graphics is take the CD graphics and then apply all that renaming.  The reason it was crashing before was because the game was reading gib files where there were supposed to be .tga's, .gmf's where there should be .gib's, etc. (Example: You get the CD graphics.  skull1.tga, which is really botlabwin.gib, gets overwritten by an image called skull1.tga.  So when you go to the bot lab, it tries to put a .tga where a gib goes and crashes).  Doing all the renaming should have fixed it.  I'll have to double check my renaming in case I made a mistake.

I wonder though... if you could just download the CD version .exe file, and then be able to use the CD version graphics.  Might be worth trying.  I'll upload the entire DSL CD graphics, including the ones that weren't modified, along with the .exe.  If that works it could solve a lot of problems.

Okay, here is my COMPLETE UI folder and the no-cd RA2.exe.  Once again this isn't guaranteed to work, so I recommend making a backup copy of your .exe and your UI folder before trying it.

Click.

Just cut/paste the files out of the folder they get extracted into, and let them overwrite everything in the RA2 folder.

What I'm attempting to do with this is essentially convert the downloaded version into the CD version, but without requiring a CD.

My computer has been down for a few days (since Monday) but all my graphic problems were fixed when I was writing a tutorial for my friend on how to download RA2 and was checking that it actually worked.

So does this work for anyone?  I'd download the trial version and try it myself, but for some reason it says I'm outside the distribution range.

So somebody needs to try it, so I can make the downloaded version DSL2.
