Computer has died, no more RA2 for a while.
« on: September 16, 2010, 03:17:35 PM »
Not long after I posted the thread in forum feedback about popups something appeared on my computer.

A program called Security Tool appeared and pretended to be a anti-spyware program that wants me to buy it for $80.
What it actually does is dump viruses into your settings and tell you they are there, but they're not the problem.
The problem was that it wouldnt let me open anything, not even folders! I tried deleting it but it remade itself.
On my Dads account malwarebytes and spybot coulnt pick it up, it only found the dumped viruses. I found out that instead of buying it, it steals you credit card details (no I wasnt stupid enough to buy it)
To solve the problem I had to wipe my computer, removing RA2 and my precious files but I have DSL and some of my favourite bots on my memory stick as a backup but i'm not putting them on yet, security tool files could be on it aswell.

So I wont be using RA2 for a while, search on google if you want to know more of security Tool rogue spyware.

I expect its hiding somewhere though, it took an awfully long time to delete my main user off my computer.

I got that same virus. It was definitely adware. I found a way to remove it, though. I think G.K. remembers that.

I remember my old desktop got a similar virus called IE defender it had its own proffessional looking website with a fake forum and everything of people posting 'problems' and solutions etc.

But it did the same thing as yours and dumped viruses and told you they were there but did nothing about it!

Consequently, we bought norton and a full system scan killed it.

Damn, I'm really sorry to hear that, dude. I think I got something like that a while back, Vista Internet Security 2010. Wouldn't let me open anything either. I somehow managed to download MalWareBytes and remove it, though. Yay slightly malfunctioning hard drive. =D

I hate it when that sort of thing happens!!! I had a similar thing only it forgot to block the log off button. Got it in task manager while it was still loading my settings.

Is taking one challenge request. First come first serve. I'm a bit rusty now but I'm going to try and crank something out for this. MW and up no glitches DSL or Stock.

Went through pretty much the same thing, but mine was harmless. UniBlue something or other.

Too bad about your computer though. If it makes you feel better, your car's next in line for my series :D

I know how you feel, sorry to hear you loose RA2 too (again I know this)

after getting lucky and having my stuff recovered, I went straight out and brought a 1TB External Hard-drive and put backups of everything on it, probably worth the investment.

Yup, but security tool trapped it and malwarebytes so I couldnt use them. I managed to use them on safe mode but they couldnt pick it up.

You should hack at your brother with his machete for infecting your PC. Again.

And that's why you want to have good antivirus software running at all times.

And/or use Linux.

Antivirus is for wimps.  :gunz:

On a more serious note, I've been online three and a half years, at least two of which without antivirus, and I've never gotten a virus.  It's more experience/common sense than it is some stupid program floating around in the background using up your ram.
