Revamped Ram Plates Showcase
« on: January 17, 2011, 09:11:32 PM »
I decided to come out and make a showcase for my components. These custom bots were built not too long ago for the sole purpose of seeing how many purposes I can come up with for using these components.

My first two components consist of the ram plate and the beater bar (which I found that the beater bar originated from the ram plate, or at least that is what the GMF file said).

Gyro Lad uses the first set of components, which are stabilizers that help the bot keep itself down, but this particular set of components aren't long enough to keep it stable other than when it starts to spin up and while driving. The original use of the component was for axe bots to keep them stable. I was inspired by a Killerhurtz RC bot I used to own, but it got thrown away :(.

Jolt shows both of the components being used for different purposes. The second component is a beater bar turned into an axe. I used the axe component as a stabilizer, and it does a great job keeping the bot from tipping forward too much when flipping.

I'll be making a few more components as I slowly come back to Robot Arena 2. Between Gran Turismo 5 and college, I haven't played around with Robot Arena 2 much, but I am still interested in this game.

Thanks. I'm glad that these are liked.

I will be making more components out of the ram plates before I move onto other components that involve more vertexes. My next goal after I move on from the ram plates is to make a spoiler out of the snow plow.

You should contact Click for DSL 3.0 work. You seem pretty good at this and those parts look awesome. And I think I know what Killerhurtz R/C you had, because I have one too, and it has little parts like that.
I built that big robot on that TV show that time

I was shocked at first when I read Somebody's post, but I'm not even close to being done learning about GMF files. I only edited the ram plate and beater bar XD. It was Clickbeetle's GMF tutorial that helped me out learn about the GMF, along with other RA2 file basics.

I have made a few components before through GMF editing, but they weren't as cool as the ones I posted. I do have one more component that I will post tomorrow. I'm going to make a few versions with different skins and component properties, and then upload them here. The only thing I need to learn is component balancing, but I will upload them regardless of balancing.

I'm glad that this community is still alive and well, and that I received a great welcome back. Thanks guys. I'll be around a lot more often to learn more about robot building DSL style and editing the game itself.

lol. Just because I've been around the Robot Arena series since the days of Aceuplink doesn't mean that I should be a vet XD.

Anyways, this is my first component that I created, which is a wedge made out of the ram plate. This also turned out to be a great drum stabilizer. I'm sure that at least a few people remember my old AI pack concept with a bunch of custom components. The bot King Zing uses it for keeping the body stable, the drum off the ground, and the bot protected.

This next one shows all of the variants. I have yet to find a use for the large ones, but I'm sure I will soon. I put together the carbon fiber and off white steel not too long ago, but I like them. One thing I will do after I put these components together and upload them is to try to learn about component balancing. I'll upload these sometime tomorrow. Right now I'm coming up with more textures for them. I just wonder if there is a way that I can get templates for these edited components for texturing other than having 3DS MAX.

the templates will be the normal template

all your doing is warping the shapes the mapping is all constant still.

you can increase your map files though, they can be 32x32, 64x64, 128x128, etc, etc

I remember King Zing :P

Neat, if skinned properly I could see a few replicas using these. Once I get RA2 up and running again I want to try my hand at ramplate editing. Maybe I can finally make that sword Doom requested so long ago XD

@JoeBlo: Thanks. I'll keep that in mind when I create textures. My main concern is trying to get the carbon fiber to look even on the ram plate. Obviously changing the GMF is going to change the texture's positioning and warp the texture.

As for the components, here they are. I only created a few different versions texture wise, and I didn't bother doing different versions of the beater-inspired axe. You will also notice a particular reference in one of the components. That is another thing I want to try to create in this game. Although I will have to recreate the shape to make it exactly like the reference that I am trying to make.

There shouldn't be any problems other than balancing and texture issues. I also changed the off white version of the wedge component. I just made it a solid color rather than textured.

I also just came up with a new idea for the spike club. There is another type of mace that I could recreate by turning the spikes into flanges.
