What is written below, in italics, was origionally typed up in Botsmashers custom bots thread. Only now it has been closed. This was kind of written in Botsmashers defence. You don't have to go through it all. I've highlighted the important bits.
Y'know what, I've got an idea. Why don't we take custom bots more seriously? At least more seriously than just flaming the crap out of them. I mean, people who made custom components probably made them for a reason, for fun if nothing else, but not to get flamed.
I agree that its not the way for newbies to join the community; to think that they can build good bots instantly by using custom components. BUT, is it really any worse than putting a DSL bot in a stock showcase? If that happens, the showcase is moved. And if they mix stock and DSL? They get told to stop, because its unbalanced and won't be allowed in tornaments. And normally we just tell newbs who use custom components to stop using them.
Now I'm not sure if Botsmasher here actually grasps the idea that if he wants to build serious bots he should use only stock or DSL parts, or if he would just rather use custom parts. And if thats the case, I don't really see why we shouldn't support it. The very idea of this thread seems to be for everyone to post their own custom bots. And apart from BS, Redline seems to be the only one who's actually done that. And now that someone, I'm assuming ACAMS, has gone to the trouble of making a whole new section of the forums for Custom bots. So why not start using it?
All Botsmasher needs is to be taught how to make a decent bot full stop, nevermind wether or not it uses custom parts.
I hope what I just typed up isn't a complete load of BS, but I hope you kind of get my point.
-
I do get your point Weirdo.... and you are right. Custom part are not a bad thing nessecarily, I just get annoyed when people think they are so good because they use cheat parts. (I am not saying that is what Bot_smasher did).
-
And I get your point Urjack, I find it easy to get annoyed at that too. I think they should be taught by the community that it is possible to be good at building with custom components, rather than it being a bad thing full stop, which is what the majority of people seem to be doing. I agree that they should be taught they aren't necissarily good 'just because' thay use custom parts though.
-
I love you now. Weirdo, I agree completely.
People treat Cheat parts like blasphemy. We should try to help this creativity. I've watched some events where people have had themselves flames to peices for just demonstrating what custom parts can do. No gloating, just a simple "Here's my bot, this is what it does."
-
If I remember correctly my Corvette was better than yours. You said something like this: "Beaten with my own parts!" I'll see if I can dig up some pictures. Or if you would RELEASE THE PARTS i could rebuild it better.
-
Thank you for the support S32 =3
...And now, back to ACAMS...
-
The Covette wasn't released to the public? Then how do I have a copy of it? I gave it hydraulics, repaited the shell, and even showcased it.
-
Why does the wiki say you have a grudge against Urjak??
-
I remember that dragbot. Awesome.
-
The Mustang I liked a lot. It's beautiful. So I AI-ed it:
ACAMS plane AI-1-BotLab (http://www.madiaba.gametechmods.com/VIDS/ACAMS%20plane%20AI-1-BotLab.wmv)
Airplane-1 (http://www.madiaba.gametechmods.com/VIDS/Airplane-1.wmv)
ACAMS plane AI-1 (http://www.madiaba.gametechmods.com/VIDS/ACAMS%20plane%20AI-1.wmv)
This cool plane was one of the reasons I made the giant Hangar arenas.
--------------------
The Corvette is awesome too. I wrote a py for it, but can't find it right now. It has short headers coming up out of the hood next to the 6-71, and they fire flames out of the pipes 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 like a good chevy should. Then at full bore they are flamethrowers. *Need to find the files*
He has some other stuff that's really cool too, but it's up to him to make public.

I was going to mod a sound chip to play an engine sound at one point too... Never got around to it. My game doesn't have any custom stuff in it anymore. That was all on my old computer years ago.

I totally agree.
-
I started this section because of the one that got started in the stock section (I deleted it, because it only had a couple bots and a lot of bad mouthing......which WILL NOT happen here). There are lots of custom components out there now and lots of custom bots could be built.

I already have several sound chips, including a jeep if we ever get the Jeep body to work right.
-
Even after seeing them for the 100th time, they still tickle me pink.
I totally agree.
At least Sombody agrees
-
I was just about to suggest a place on the forum such as this once I saw the topics, etc being made... I cant GMF edit like ACAMS but I have my fair share of custom stuff I made :-D

Who the heck is Sombody?!
They are great bots ACAMS. I really hope you have more.

ACAMS has made several new gmf objects in 3dsMax for experimental projects of mine through the years. He's an expert at 3dsMax, IMHO.

What are you talking about?
Oh, and by the way, I lost the bot in my avatar and all my custom components to a virus. : (
-
Here's another of ACAMS' cool custom bots (hope you don't mind ACAMS).
His Willys Jeep. Though some of its faces are transparent as of yet, it is still very cool IMHO.
It also is using ACAMS' 6-71 blower. It is 4WD, and has cool steering.

I love it..
I wanted to make some jeeps/trucks with FB's monster wheels but you cant really make cars with the basic chassis
-
DSL would not exist if it was not for DarkRat's custom component replicas. I wanted to bring his bots to life. Legitimize them and their parts. Wanted to promote a way to extend and expand RA2. DSL grew out of Custom Component Replicas.
Custom components are not bad, its how they are used in competition that becomes a balancing issue.

I feel as if there should be one of those green toy soldiers driving it.

Looks great! All it needs now is some camo textures on there and it'll look awesome.
