Title: Wiki Trivia Contest
Post by: Trovaner on November 15, 2015, 02:02:32 PM
To promote more activity on the wiki, I'm thinking of starting a new contest.

Every Saturday for 6 weeks, a new trivia question will be posted in this thread. Each new trivia question will represent a different round in this contest. At the start of each round, the answer will be given to the previous round's question. In order to win a round, a member must be the first person to update/create the wiki page corresponding to the answer with at least +300 bytes in a single update (as shown on the Recent Changes screen) before the start of the next round. Winning a round will give you one point in the contest. There are no rules against updating/creating more than one page in a round (thereby boosting the chances of you guessing the correct answer). Additionally, after all 6 trivia rounds, the member (or members) with the most correct pages modified (with at least +100 bytes added before the end of each round) will gain an additional 2 points. At the end of the contest, the member or members that win the most points will be awarded the prize. To be fair, words will not be required to have proper spelling and grammar as long as the information is valid, on-topic, and to the best of your ability. To limit bias, edits and questions may be thrown out or penalized if at least three unique members request it (for reasons that I consider to be fair). If a question is thrown out, a new question will be posted at the end of the week for the given round (in other words, there will always be exactly 6 rounds with at least 1 valid question). Since this will be a race of sorts, each round's question will be automatically posted at different times of the day every Saturday with the exact time given a week in advance.

Here is an example question and answer:
Q. Which enclosed arena has a floor that is primarily water?

I already have more than enough questions (>30) made up for this contest but I will accept proposals via PM (for either the current contest or future contests if this goes well). Since most of my questions are related to arenas, I'll probably keep to those types of questions this time around (so that I have backups just in case we have to throw out a question or two). Keep in mind that sending me a trivia question would give you a slight edge since you probably know the answer to your own question (that said, there is no guarantee that I will use your question and I will not inform you of which round your question will appear in).

I haven't decided on the prize yet but I'll figure something out if there is enough interest.

Thoughts?

I'll give it a shot.  I'd like to get some wiki editing skills and I think this is a good start for me.

Based on the poll, we have roughly 8 people interested in this. As such, I bumped the number of unique members needed to throw out or penalize something down to 3 from 5 (this does not include me and I'm still the judge on if it is a valid reason so I think this is still fair).

For those of you who voted no or didn't vote at all, is there something that I can do to make this more appealing to you?

For those of you who voted yes, does not having a prize other than fame change your vote? I'm still on the fence about this so I'm interested in hearing if the extra effort is worth it.

no, it does not change my opinion.

Since nobody else is speaking up, I'll probably hold off on the prize. If, however, this is a success and I decide to have another wiki trivia contest that does have a prize than I'll be sure to award this contest's winner(s) as well.

Now that we have that sorted out, I think we have to come up with a start date. It looks like I may have pushed this off a little too far and consequently most people will have trouble participating due to the holidays. As such, I'll post the time of the first round on January 2, 2016 and the first round will take place on January 9, 2016.

Now that the holidays are over, let's get this thing started. Next Saturday, the first round's question will be posted at 12:00 PM Central Standard Time (it should be posted now).

If anyone needs a wiki account, now is the time to get one so you don't get a late start in the contest or end up waiting for a Wiki moderator to add you.

We'll start with a question that you should have no trouble looking up (or guessing  ;)).

Round 1: (this round is over)
Q. What arena uses the following description: "On the tallest of towers, in the fiercest of storms, bots will clash in the ultimate confrontation between good and evil."

Round 2's question will be posted next Saturday at 4 PM Central Standard Time (it should be posted).

Epic Showdown?
I can't confirm or deny anything until the end of the round (when I post the next question) but if you think that that is the correct answer than you should keep the following in mind:

The answer to the first round's question is the Epic Showdown arena. It was a close call but congratulations goes out to Naryar for  winning round one!

Let's try a question that is a little harder...

Round 2: (this round is over)
Q. On the old RA2 forums, which arena did Firebeetle post a Do-It-Yourself mod?

For those of you who did not participate in round one, keep in mind that it is not to late. If you need an account, you should request access ASAP so that you don't fall to far behind.

Round 3's question will be posted next Saturday at 4 AM Central Standard Time (it should be posted now).

I can't say if anyone has guessed the correct answer yet but I might as well bump this so that everyone is reminded of it...

Since there aren't too many guesses yet, I would highly recommend throwing some guesses out if you want a chance at points. You can earn 1 point for being the first person to guess the correct answer (by making a change of at least 200 bytes). You can be in the running for 2 points if you strategically copy someone else's guesses (by making a change of at least 100 bytes). If 200 bytes is too much for a wild guess, you can do 100 bytes just to be in the running for the bonus points (however, you wouldn't be able to win the round if you did this unless you went back and made a change of at least 200 bytes before anyone else got to it).

The Do-It-Yourself mod was for the Practice Arena. For those of you who weren't around or didn't see it, I actually left this comment next to one of the Practice Arena listings on the Custom Arenas page: "A DIY project posted on the old forums." Unfortunately, nobody got points this round but thanks go out to Silverfish for taking a guess.

Since round 2 was a little hard, let's do an easier question for round 3.

Round 3:
Q. What arena was used in BBEANS2?

Round 4 will take place on January 30, 2016, at 8 PM Central Time (it should be posted now).
Title: Re: Wiki Trivia Contest

Now that we are halfway through the week, I'll post another reminder.

If you haven't taken a guess yet, you should definitely consider doing so. If you guess correctly, you could win anywhere from 1 to 3 points depending on if you are first and/or win the bonus at the end of the contest.

Even if you don't have a wiki account, it is not too late to get in on this contest.

Round 3 goes to Naryar. The Electric Arena 2 arena was used in BBEANS 2 but I was kind of hoping that someone would guess the BBEANS Tournament Arena V2 :D

Moving on, I've got one that is a bit more obscure but I hope we get more guesses than we had in Round 2.

Round 4:
Q. For what arena did Madiaba create a skinning contest?

Round 5 will take place on February 6, 2016, at 8 AM Central Time (it should be posted now).

Nobody has a commanding lead yet but we're getting to the point of no return. Now is the time to start making guesses on questions that you may or may not know just to stay in the running...

Also, remember that question about Firebeetle's DIY mod?

Round 4 goes to Geice. To be honest, I'm pretty surprised that you got this one since I believe this took place before your time. Did you see the answer posted on Madiaba's page? The original contest was hosted on the official forums before they got shutdown.

Let's try one that all of you should be able to guess if you think hard enough about it.

Round 5:
Q. Other than the Parking Lot and the Practice Arena, what stock arena has objects that can get pushed around?

Round 6 will take place on February 13, 2016, at 12 AM Central Time (it should be posted now).

What are you calling a stock arena ? Is it an arena which has been made by Gabriel Interactive and not by modding ? Because I'm pretty sure all the stock arenas don't have movable objects, except the parking lot AND the test arena.

well nevermind.

Any arena found in stock has some version of it in DSL and other mods (some arenas got tweaked but kept the same name).

It's too late. Someone already edited the page, and frankly, I can't think of an update to it that would be 100 bytes. :P

If you think that Geice got it, you could probably add a gallery of different screenshots, mention the flags, list the trophies for each event, and/or mention the DSL version.

It looks like Geice won round 5 and, as such, we're looking at a very close race between all contestants.

Round 6:
Q. Out of all of the publicly available arenas available at this time, what arena other than the King of the Hill arenas awards a positive amount of points to players without them making contact with each other?

The answer to round 6, winner(s) of the bonus round, and final scores will be posted on February 20, 2016, at 12 PM (it should be posted now).

Unfortunately, we might have to throw out round 6's question. I was thinking of the AU Challenge Arena when I came up with the question. A while back, I moved the Soccer Arena to the King of the Hill section and, consequently, it completely slipped my mind. If you read the question carefully, I kind of hinted that they couldn't make contact with each other but I can see the confusion. In accordance with my original rules, we need 3 votes in favor of a new question if we want to redo round 6 (this excludes my vote).

To limit bias, edits and questions may be thrown out or penalized if at least three unique members request it (for reasons that I consider to be fair). If a question is thrown out, a new question will be posted at the end of the week for the given round (in other words, there will always be exactly 6 rounds with at least 1 valid question).

I'll leave this open for another week and perform the appropriate action on February 27, 2016, at 12 PM CST (it should be posted now). If we throw out the question, it will be a new question for round 6. If we don't throw out the question, I will post the winner(s) of the bonus and the final scores.

Unless we decide to throw out the round, you will get the point. I was a little on the fence about this but it was clearly my fault for not having my facts straight and it isn't as if you found a loop hole that you took advantage of.

It was a close vote but since we didn't reach the prerequisite number of votes (3), round 6 will be kept and Mr. AS will receive the win.

Now that we are done with all of the rounds, its time to award the bonus points. We very nearly had a 4-way tie between all contestants for getting the bonus points but round 6 allowed Mr. AS to pull away. The additional 2 points turned out to be a huge factor in this contest thanks in part to how close this game was.

With that, here are the final scores:
ParticipantPoints
Naryar2
Mr. AS3
Geice2
Silverfish0

Congratulations, Mr. AS for winning the Wiki Trivia Contest.

Thank you to everyone that participated. I hope you enjoyed playing.

Now that we are done, I have some questions that anyone can answer (the more the merrier).

  • Did you have fun watching/participating? Yes
  • Would you participate if we had another wiki contest? Yes
  • If we had another, are there any rules that should be changed? Maybe the first person to edit/create also gets a point, even if they get overridden?
  • If we had another, is there anything that I should be doing differently? Not really.
