If nobody entered, MR TEST said he was going to make an entry!

But the winner ... I am not going to say who it is just yet, entered last week, so MR TEST was off the hook.

I feel sorry for not coming up with an entry; I'm sorry, 'Camsy.

By any chance, can we re-do this, then?

So are we going to continue denying that this game is dying or what? The number of people who have been entering BOTM's has been slowly decreasing, and now we're at one entrant (who is probably ACAMS anyway.) At this rate I honestly can't see this game having more than a year or two left in it.

I'm just waiting for a tournament. At this rate I might make one.

I blame the theme. For me at least this wasn't one I could have "Fun" with due to it's limiting nature. Credit to whoever it was for actually entering though.

I'm just waiting for a tournament. At this rate I might make one.

Hey, I proposed a tournament and no one seemed too bothered about it. You included. If you want a tournament then it's nice to at least go "Sounds cool, might enter." or "How about x weightclass instead" or something. That way you're helping shape something you might like to enter and the host feels like it's worthwhile for it to go ahead.

Title: Re: Vote BOTM Feb 2013
Post by: Noodle on January 28, 2013, 11:44:06 AM
It's definitely both (the theme and the dead community).  For instance, I remember back when I made this:

Even with people still making BoTM's on a regular basis, I believe that particular "tank themed" contest got 3 entries.  These sorts of BoTMs are never popular, I don't know why ACAMS decided it was a good idea to do this.

As for the community, well we all know it's pretty much ****ed.  I've given it some thought and I was gonna write up this big post about whats wrong with the community and how to fix it, but I genuinely don't give a enough of a **** (and I don't think anyone else does, for that matter).

If you want more BoTM entries, one thing you can try is offering some sort of prize for the winner.  One good idea would be to let the winner of one month's BoTM pick the theme for the next one.

Why bother?

Wanna create a new game?  It's not good enough if it doesn't have soft body physics that don't exist yet.

Wanna create a new mod?  Good luck finding documentation on how to mod the game.

Wanna create a new bot?  Everything's been done already, unless you do IRL (which is a complete waste of time).  Either way most people don't care.

Wanna create a new tournament?  Few will enter.

The problem is with the community as a whole, and it's not going to be fixed by one singular person.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ytCEuuW2_A# (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ytCEuuW2_A#)

Wanna create a new bot?  Everything's been done already
its honestly not that difficult to make a bot that isnt RPB/NWB/whatever clone #1 million. bots are only as bad as the builder is.

take for example this showcase: https://gametechmods.com/forums/index.php/topic,7401.0.html (https://gametechmods.com/forums/index.php/topic,7401.0.html) most of the bots in there are the kind of "bleh" or "built over 9000 times" or "LAME" kind of bots from a frankly average/below average builder.

now look at this one: https://gametechmods.com/forums/index.php/topic,755.0.html (https://gametechmods.com/forums/index.php/topic,755.0.html)
(note the abundance of hybrids near the end, and how its almost always creative all the way through)
hes one of the best builders in the community, and also one of the most creative. certainly not coincidence, and i certainly think most would agree.
(inb4 "yeah well were not all saeg ecksdee")
you can atleast TRY to be creative like that. if you work at it you could be on that level someday.

Damn, if only I'd known this was going on.

You didn't know a botm was going on? Really? Where do you live, the Junkyard?

I didn't enter because as a number of people have said before, the theme put me off, and not to mention I just got the whole skinning thing after putting in a tiny bit of effort.

Standard BoTM next month and I will most likely enter. You may even hold me to that.

Oh, it's still possible to create new bot designs. The only problem is that the whole community is going to frown upon you unless you focus your time towards building the same generic designs that everyone else builds.

Because it's not super-efficient and/or good at killing something current.

Artbots are fine. Conceptual bots like turret spinners and so on are fine. IRL is fine. What isn't is basically producing a design which is just badly designed and then passing it off as originality. If it works better, fine, but if you're going to make a robot that is worse and then pass it off as an attempt to be original then you're simply lying to us (obviously not referring to you Craaig since your a good builder, just a general message for everyone). If a robot ends up being generic, whatever. As long as it works well and does its job better than other designs, that's okay, that's how we ended up making designs we call generic; if a design was bad no-one would use it. New designs are great too, but poop dressed in new clothes is still poop in the end.

It was an actual robot (albeit a bad one), I just gave it a funny name.  I know you're predisposed to just reading the name and not taking a good look at the robot (because that might require some thinking power that you don't posses), but I figured you'd be able to figure that out on your own.

If I get good at making components I will make a total conversion mod of DSL. This might help a bit. You do realise however that when a new robot fighting programme comes around interest will come back again. Also DSL needs to be readily available to download on here as you can't get the game hardly anywhere.

There needs to be readily available links for just about everything on this site.  It's so ridiculously hard to find some of the tools, special thanks to ACAMS' 10/10 organizational skills.

Tell me, why is it there is a downloads toolbar on the main page, and a downloads page linked at the top of the page that is completely separate (and useless)?

Maybe it has something to do with a certain group of idiots that want to complain about everything he does for us with little to no recognition or even respect. You mean there's hope a new one will be released within the next year or so?

Yeah I dont think so

Not to mention there is less people actually giving a sh** about GTM every day... So why should he?

Yeah I mean, the game is starting to loose popularity, so why don't we just do everything in our power to continue running it into the ground? Sounds like a good plan to me.
>Starting to lose popularity
>Implying RA2 hasn't been dead since BBEANS6 ended
This is really just a discussion board for people who used to play RA2 and who still screw around with it occasionally. I'm not sure why a BOTM with only one entry is the event that signals the death of RA2. People just weren't interested in the theme this time around.

Treating him like sh** doesn't make him want to keep the place going.

Is that a little easier for your asspie brain to understand?

the more time guy guys spend arguing over whos e-dick is (smaller) means the less time is spent on, ohIdontknow, RA2?

 :ermm:

Maybe it has something to do with a certain group of MAWNGLERZ that want to complain about everything he does for us with little to no recognition or even respect. He actually has a REAL LIFE BUSINESS and a REAL FAMILY TO SUPPORT. So why would he spend every waking moment screwing around on an internet forum that he gains absolutely nothing from.

no one really cares.

if the site is sh**, we will complain that the site is sh**. if you watch a bad movie, do you take into account that [the director] has a family and business to attend to?

If there was an active 24/7 stable server for real-time non-ai robot battles would that help give some interest back here? I play RA2 to build a bot and fight it, I get no satisfaction in working on a bot then trusting it to strategically shaved chimps Gabriel Interactive's AI programmer(s). Maybe others are the same? If there is enough interest it  might be something worth looking into.

movie =/= website, by a long shot

That's a sh** metaphor.

I agree with Noodle, for once.

That director is getting paid to make that movie and therefore is his means of supporting his family. ACAMS gets absolutely nothing from maintaining this website.

this

I'm sure every n00b first believes that Tournaments are online (I did) and they're sort of disappointed when they find out the truth, like I was. If we could actually run Tournaments online, d'you know how much more fun and intense and engaging it would be?

Sure, seeing your bot fight for itself is nice, but using your bot the way its meant to be used? It's a massive difference.

We should start running pvp tournaments, honestly. Even with the lag it's still fun.

I'd be interested to know when this was last tried on any sort of scale, surely with internet speeds now it should be minimal lag these days? I'm thinking something like Unreal Tournament 2004 online or similar. I may drive like Stevie Wonder but least its me.

RA2 online games always lag, even on LAN.

UT2004 lags as well, sometimes badly, but its still a kick. Perhaps we could set up a Saturday 1v1 tournament, containment cube IRL middleweight or something and see how it goes. There is an arena on Beetlebros with basically nothing that could be used also.

There is a right and wrong way of criticizing and I believe some of you have crossed that fine line. ACAMS has done much more for RA2 than many of you know and I believe he deserves our respect. If you have a problem with something let him know. You must however understand that he has a life outside of RA2 and this website.

As for the wiki, it is currently running 1.15.1 and 1.20.2 is the latest. When ACAMS has time, I'm sure he will get around to updating it (this tutorial (http://www.wikihow.com/Update-MediaWiki-Wiki) should do the trick as long as you use the most recent version of MediaWiki instead of the one that they are linking to).

Also, stop complaining about the game dying. Everyone knows that it is on the decline but none of the people complaining are doing anything about it. Many threads have been soiled by your negative attitudes and it is starting to get on my nerves. By repeatedly bringing it up in threads, you are only making the forum less enjoyable for newcomers and current members (furthering the issue). I have been around since 2006 and this issue was brought to my attention from day 1 (people complained then as they do now). However, the complaining has never been this bad. I understand that RA2 isn't doing as well as it used to but that is no reason to bury it while it still has signs of life and interest.

Playing online has never been that great but there are still quite a few people that will do it if you request it in the appropriate thread.

I don't think it's a time issue.
