Title: BOTM May 2016
Post by: Trovaner on April 11, 2016, 11:17:12 PM
Let's do another DSL 2.2 BOTM.

Here's how this works. Every participant creates a bot that follows the given bot restrictions for that month. They then create a simple splash for their bot and uploaded it to GTM's BOTM Uploader before the deadline expires. After the deadline expires, a poll will be created for the community to vote on their favorite entry. At the end of the month, the splash with the most votes will be put on GTM's homepage for a month.

Bot Restrictions
Splash Rules
Please upload your entries using the BOTM Uploader (https://gametechmods.com/forums/index.php?page=BOTM).

It's still worth a shot, though, isn't it? He can at least try.

I may end up making something for this. Or maybe not... Only started using DSL recently after not playing any version of it for a year, but I think I've used it enough to build something decent. Regardless, maybe I should just wait; I don't know what kind of thing to even build.

He'll lose and be disappointed. Better wait till you are a decent builder before entering botm.

Besides, the last botms have been of varying quality.

Alright then.  I guess I'll give BOTM one last go here.

Nah, I am not be disappointed when I lost.
But still not a good building skill, and I made a useless bot. :baffled:

you should make a showcase so we can help

I don't think you should be discouraging participation. Just encourage taking time when making the robot, making the splash look nice and honing bot making skills in showcases, as well.

Everyone is eligible to participate if you have an account at GTM. I'd rather have a bunch of mediocre entries than none. Just be aware that the vote tends to be hard on entries that are not original, combat effective, and/or visually appealing.

My potential entry isn't going right. I'd do what Naryar said;
you should make a showcase so we can help
But wouldn't that reveal the entry? I thought I wasn't supposed to reveal that I was the creator of the thing I'm making.

Usually for BotM, you are correct, you don't want to showcase your bot, or otherwise give away that you built it.  (I kinda broke that rule with the Mr. Bones nonsense, but whatever.)  Naryar was saying that Wen should make a showcase and improve his building skill before trying to make anything for BotM.

You don't have to be good. Just build a meme bot and get a free meme votes

Sadly, this is true. You don't even have to put anything inside the bot, really (as shown by entry #3 last month.

Well I certainly am not doing that. I want to build something that takes effort.

By the way, how do you make the skin for a robot more detailed? Mine's always pixel-y and low resolution.

When you export the texture, you get a 256 by 256 pixel bmp.  You can resize that to any multiple of 256 (ie, 512 x 512, 1024 x 1024) and it'll import fine.  Do note that you can no longer change the texture in the bot lab once you've done this, but there's usually no reason you'd want to do that anyway.

The edge lines are weirdly off-center anyway though.

Just to ask, is there a certain size that the splash image should be? I know I'm asking this real late, but I spent most of the time I had to make it trying to get an arcade game to work on a PC emulator. (It didn't work.)

  • Images must be no wider than 700px and no taller than 800px.

Oh, sorry. I was in a hurry to get this made and didn't check.

What's DSL 2.2 exactly? I can only find download links to 2.1(but I guess they're 2.2 anyways)?

Also since I'm new here I don't know all the glitches, but as far as I understand it's the following:

Am I right with that?
Standard=no big clipping parts(but smaller ones are allowed I guess?9
IRL=no clipping at all, just what would work in real life
AI parts=normaly unaccessable in DSL
BFE=Bot File Editing
AAM=?
Hax mode=(is this the one that glitches out certain motors and allows you to place stuff in them?)

I do understand what's basically meant, something that doesn't abuse any game glitches.

AAM is basically when you add a bunch of attachment points to the .gmf of a component. It's like BFE but less useful.

Hax mode can be found here: https://gametechmods.com/forums/index.php/topic,7468.0.html it's kind of finicky, and more limiting than BFE, but won't crash your game if you mess something up.

You're pretty much right with all the terminology. You can use this (https://gametechmods.com/forums/index.php?topic=17443.0) for a more detailed description of building styles.

Why isn't the 2.2 download available in the downloads section/wiki and why were most of the RW bots removed from it?

1. That's probably just a mistake that'll get fixed eventually.

2. They're still in the game; they're just only available in the "Import Bots" section for teams. This is because (at least to my knowledge) the Robot Wars replicas haven't been updated like the BattleBots/RFL robots and wouldn't really fit in with the other replicas.

Oh I see, thanks for the answers. I guess the RW robots just aren't as high quality as the battlebots ones in their current form, was worried that they were going to get replaced. One other thing I noticed is that the sawblade(stock sawblade seems to have been replaced?) now no longer clips through components/chassis.

Actually, I believe Click's reasoning  was that a lot of the RW replicas were updated in the RW RA2 mod and the Battlebots/RFL bots haven't been touched.  So he updated them for 2.2 so that they are in fighting form with updated AI and all that.
