I always check my registry and DNS settings manually and remove suspicious entries. Even if my computer was infected, I would know.

There's a file in a sub-directory of system32 that contains DNS redirection settings. It's often used in a Website Redirect prank that people pull on their friends, and can be used to tell your web browser to redirect requests for certain IP addresses to other destinations. What likely happened was that the "virus" was actually an entry added to this list that redirected people from commonly-used search engines to a specific URL. Some file-hosts with search engines (e-snips) will do this kind of stuff to get free hits.
