You should build one: Skibike
« on: October 16, 2009, 07:58:29 PM »

Build this thing after school today... Found this old mountain bike on the side of the road about a year ago, my mountain bike needed new tires so I took them off of this. It's been sitting in my shed ever since, along with plenty of other bike projects I may post someday...

I had a couple old kid's learning snowboards lying around as well. I wanted to make a Skibike, but since I didn't have any skis I figured a snowboard could work well too.

I don't have snow... yet. It's going to be a cold winter this year, though, and we've been having tons of rain and 40 degree weather which is unusual for October. I can't wait for a nice day of snow so I can try this thing out... If you don't hear from me again after that, you can figure out why!

awesome!!!!
the back suspension does nothing w/ that setup, though.
edit: if i made one i would strap a biiiig motor onto the rear ski and have the back part of it be a tread, so it is like a snowmobile.

I can assure you it does. The sissy bar is on a free-rotating axis and can move with the suspension.

Do you live in a mountainous area?  I don't, which is probably one of the reasons I've never seen anything quite like that.  Looks really neat, though.

Someone actually made that commercially available. I know, I got one for Christmas 6 years ago.
You got my vote for RA2 Wizard. Always and forever.

take a look at Nitro Circus episode "Winder Wonderland" they use them a lot on there attempting to do backflips on them.

I would like to own one but Australia only get snow in one place, the tops of the Blue Ranges mountains, the closest place with snow would be flying over to New Zealand

This is the kind of idea somebody has after saying "Hey guys, hold my beer for a second.", and it always ends up by "This seemed a good idea at the time".

The place where the fork is attached to the board in the front is waaaaaay too weak. That plastic will snap easily on the first bump you hit on a slope. Even with the shock, a lot of the weight distribution is going to hit that connection point because it is raised up from the board part itself.

I highly recommend that you fabricate a bracket to go in that location or beef it up a bit. It would suck if you got hurt. Having something break in the front as you are going down a hill is far more catastrophic than something breaking in the back.

Fix it up , we don't want you to die... good forum mods are hard to come by. :P

Yeah... These 20cm front polycarbonate extenders are very weak and if you lose half of your drive you're in trouble.

There's a park where I live that used to be an open pit coal mine (basically a big crater) that makes for decent tobogganing when it snows in January. A couple of years ago, someone had a skibike there and I tried it out. It really was a lot of fun.

Going on with the continuing theme here, the front really dosen't look sturdy. Other than that, it's lookin' good :)

Skateboard truck is on... Had to use a modified one to fit in the front forks but its there. No need for brakes, you can stop these like a real snowboard by turning sideways in the snow or just jumping off =P

Bumping thread for good reason. Last year we did not get sufficient snow here to do decent testing of this. Being a year older and wiser (and having a few more power tools) I have decided to pull this thing out of the shed and do some work to get it ready for this season. I will hopefully post some updated pictures and stuff later.

Thats nice, my little bro and dad took one of our kickboards and took off the wheels and replaced them with miniskis.
Best part is, that its still reversible back to its wheeled form.
