Title: Inventions
Post by: Reier on March 10, 2010, 12:12:26 AM

(I didn't know where to post this, move if I'm wrong)

Post all those crazy gadgets you came up with during algebra in this topic. Try not to be goofy or sarcastic if you please.

I had an idea for a semi-internet capable watch last sunday. Sounds stupid, but it could be on the market in the future (or maybe it is already...). :P

Please pardon my terrible paint rendition.

You got your screen in the middle obviously, with your selected App. The time is always on the top, after all it is a watch. The time would be via satellite (like cell phones), and if the signal gets cut out it takes over just automatically.
Use the buttons on the side to scroll for different apps, like the calendar or weather or something. To select it, press the upper-right button, and use the up/down/left/right buttons and the select button to navigate in the app. Press the upper-left button to go back to the main menu. Or you could always ditch the buttons and make a touch screen one instead. Now you might have noticed I said semi-internet capable. I say this because I think it would be pretty difficult to navigate a web page with 6 buttons all with a screen smaller than one inch. So I think it would have to download additional apps though something akin to the android market.

I also thought it would be neat to have either an addition onto this or a different watch with the ability to play MP3 files. It would have a headphone jack, or there might be some kind of tech that you could transmit to the ear-buds without needing a headphone jack. There would also be some way to download stuff to your watch from your computer via some kind of jack also.

Comments? Suggestions? Please post your own as well.

You could have one less jack if you could use a MicroSD (Scrap Daddy lol) slot. But that would probably be risky if you aim to have that watch water-resistant as well.

Post by: Reier on March 10, 2010, 12:18:51 AM
I thought of the water-resistant problem, I think if you make it touch screen you might be able to pull it off. But yeah, probably no MP3. D:
But wouldn't the SD card not really solve anything? Computer jack and SD would still be the same number of slots.

Yeah, but a card slot's thinner and smaller. :P

Touch screen? On a 1-inch screen? o_o

I was thinking along the lines of this
(http://www.infogps.ca/produits/images/usb-a-mini-b-5pin.jpg)
kind of slot (not the USB :P) which I think would be slightly smaller and more common, but I could be wrong.

2. And that's why I like the button version better. :P

You know, it's kinda odd that you're going smaller instead of going bigger (like Apple). XD

But honestly, though that could still be invented, I don't think it would be that popular because you know, an iPhone can do all your watch could do, and if you only have the watch you'll still buy a phone for contacting purposes. :P

Concerns:
Battery Life-- An internet-capable device draws a lot of power, and something the size of a watch doesn't have room for a big battery. Keeping your watch from dying would be an issue.

Too many buttons-- Perhaps an iPod like scroll wheel could solve this.

Computer Jack (USB?) Unnecessary-- If it's wifi capable, have it sync wirelessly. If not, give it a combined USB-headphone jack like the iPod Shuffle.

App Store-- An app store on a screen that small doesn't seem like it would work too well. Keep in on the home computer.

Wireless Headphones-- Bluetooth Headphones would be a good way to avoid a headphone jack, but would suck even more battery life.

Pwn: It'd totally bomb but it's kinda interesting. And smaller is cool. :D
But what of us who never make phone calls? Eh? :P The iWatch (hehe) would be a bit cheaper as well, but....still pricey...

frezal: I think that prototype self-recharging battery they announced a while ago which I totally forgot the name of would be perfect for this since it'd drain a whole lotta power.

Scroll wheel? I don't have an iPod so I never saw it.

The USB-othercablething is only for downloading stuff from your own computer (Like MP3 files), but you might be able to download apps also that way too. But less ports is always better, the headphone/USB would be neat but I've never heard of it.

Bluetooth, now there's a cool idea. But a lot more people have headphones, plus it would make the cost lower not to have BT.

Remember those old watches that have adjustable ticks for those lagging watches? You could replace that with a scroll wheel.
Title: Re: Inventions
Post by: frezal on March 10, 2010, 12:50:49 AM
The scroll wheel (or click wheel) is a touch sensitive wheel that also clicks like buttons in designated spaces. The iPod Nano (http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/) and iPod Classic (http://www.apple.com/ipodclassic/) currently use them. All of the iPod Shuffles (http://www.apple.com/ipodshuffle/features.html), save the first gen Fun Dip looking ones, have had the combo USB/headphone jack.

Pwn: Hmm...maybe.

Freezul: Oh I thought you meant it had something like a mini-mouse wheel. How would I put that on a watch and wouldn't technically it have the same number of buttons? I'm open to suggestions.

You would have four buttons, but you wouldn't have to always rely on the four buttons. Scrolling could be set to the wheel (as could brightness and such).

Not physically. It's like a trackpad on a laptop.

Invented a shovel with a sawblade on the end to cut through stuff easier (like ice).
It would be so easy to decapitate someone with it though...

I actually built it in Autodesk Inventor in my engineering class, looked pretty cool too.

Hey Stag, you do know that your invention is used on all heat-using (oil, coal, methane, nuclear) power plants, right ?

Pretty much your basic netbook (but better >:]), but with a combined mouse pad/keyboard in a touchscreen form. So you have a much wider range of movements and hand gestures than before for ease of access. :D I know they have these out there

http://dvice.com/pics/Asus-dual-screen-touchscreen-keyboard.jpg

but the ones I've seen look more like an iPad and less like a computer. It has some USBs and an SD card slot on the right, and stuff like audio jacks and stuff on the left. I'd get one, but I bet it would be a fingerprint magnet. XD

Thoughts? Suggestions?

i doubt that a touch screen keyboard is an actual improvement. fun technology, but i think a normal keyboard is better.
next to that, i'm not much of a laptop person, i rather have desktop PCs. as for keyboard, just get a Logitech G19 like i did.

Sadly, there's no such thing as perpetual motion machine without breaking the laws of thermodynamics and the conservation of energy. Energy will still be wasted in the form of heat escaping from the system, and thus will lose power over time. That however, more or less how a car recharges its battery while driving (but instead of a generator, it uses an alternator). :D

There's no such thing as an endless supply of power (the sun's life is finite as well). But there are endless ways to lessen the rate of energy source depletion. :D

Title: Re: Inventions
Post by: frezal on March 17, 2010, 11:36:41 PM
The problem is that the motor would use more energy than the generator could provide. Too much energy would be lost due to heat and such.
Title: Re: Inventions

I think Hydro's concept, there, is already applied in almost every vehicle made... Ever hear of an alternator?
Title: Re: Inventions
Post by: Reier on March 18, 2010, 09:52:58 AM
While it wouldn't last long at all, I'd like to see how much time hydro's thingy keeps going... I think it would boost the power of the battery a little bit, you know. Well, if it's rechargeable.

Sadly, there's no such thing as perpetual motion machine without breaking the laws of thermodynamics

The Laws of Thermodynamics:

Quote from: C.P. Snow
Zeroth: You must play the game.
First: You can't win.
Second: You can't break even.
Third: You can't quit the game.

Incidentally, thermodynamics bears an uncanny resemblance to a certain other game some people on this forum know about.
